Lucky old you.
All I got was a glass of mulled wine (I declined the mince pie)... but then as an indie I suppose that it's only fair that such company goodies are given to permies.

If something in Britian got blown up, I think they'd have a giant change of heart about this whole "War on Terrorism" thing. I'd especially like to see how the French would react to something like that... say a plane crashed into the Eiffel Tower. Fortunately for them the French haven't been able to build a skyscraper for years so they don't really have many targets.

BTW, Rei is a terrorist hugger (hehe) but she doesn't live in the UK. Only Goatman and Harmonia have that honor.

2001-12-24 08:08:18 AM
Eli: Newsflash : Things have been blowing up for ages in the UK thanks to terrorists. Maybe not everybody reacts and think in the same way you do, and maybe you don't like that. Some people are a bit more aware of current geopolitical issues than you, however. That might at least explain things a bit...

2001-12-24 08:09:52 AM
Apart from the fact that a giant change of heart on the side of the UK is not what the US are waiting for, since the UK is their most faithfull ally so far...

But then again, you might have mmissed that one quite easily too...

Dido I was referring to the general public, not the government. If you've been following the papers there is very low public support in the UK for the US's actions in Afghanistan.

As far as IRA bombings are concerned, that's a different story. Why would an IRA bombing affect public opinion about Afghanistan? Or maybe you forgot what the topic was.

Here's a tidbit for Rei:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/south_asia/newsid_1727000/1727199.stm

She's been claiming forever that Dostum doesn't support the new Afghani government and that civil war is going to break out there. Once again, Rei was dead wrong; Dostum is joining the new government.

2001-12-24 08:36:08 AM
Eli: If you want to differentiate between different kinds of terrorism, you're right. Then the IRA has nothing to do with it...
As for public polls... I'm personally not impressed by them. The way a question is asked, as well as the circumstances in whisch or the person by whom it is asked can change around the public opinion like a leaf on a tree. The government that supports the US was voted for by that public... If not everybody agrees, it means two things: in the UK people have freedom of thought and speech, and secondly, not everybody unquestioningly "follows the leader".
That last part may be frightening to some. Actually, it scares the shiat out of a fairly large number of governments in this world. Others see it as one of the great accomplishments of civilization.

JOHNDX: Mayb they should... it would make life a lot easier, wouldn't it? Then again, I am afraid there are some negative points to that too...

Merry Xmas to you too! (And good too see you worked on your spelling ;)

Vegasj,

I heard 5, you heard 20. Either way, this guy is going to walk free.

Whether he does it 5 years, 7 years, 10 years, 11 years, 15 years or twenty from now is not the point. The point is this asshole is going to be free, shortly to blow up another plane.

Vegasj,

I agree. Today's CIA is a total tool of the media and the liberals. People need to get whacked. John Walker??! How the hell did that fark ever get on camera? The CIA should have taken him to aircraft carrier as soon as then found him, in total secrecy. Then procede to torture him, extract what info they could, shoot him and dump his corpse overboard.

Relax. The ultimate charging decisions won't be made for some time. My prediction is that this guy will be charged with all manner of crimes, several of which carrying punishment of life in prison. Attempting to blow up an airplane with 185 people on board = 185 counts of attempted murder, for starters. This dude will be very, very old when he next breathes free air.

2001-12-24 09:31:23 AM
Maybe the FBI can throw in a charge of child molestation for good measure, that way Bubba would really have a go at him!

Fb-,

Something silly you said three months ago.

16 years ago I took an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States of America. I joined the Army.

In these 16 years I have given Blood, Sweat, and Tears for my country, for my fellow soldiers, and for the people of America. I did this because I wanted to, because I love this country, not because I had to. I had many opportunities to get out along the way, but I stayed.
I have known some of the finest people ever to walk the planet, and I have met some of the worst.
I have guarded the DMZ in Korea on christmas while the North Koreans played Christmas carols for propaganda and tried to break our spirit.I have patrolled the border between Nicaragua and Honduras, and taken fragments from a farc rebels grenade. I have fired a twenty five millimeter cannon into an Iraqi bunker and then had to remove the enemy dead from that bunker because they refused to surrender.
I have watched as the remains of friends were pulled from their fighting vehicle because they were they accidently shot by an apache helicopter. I watched a vehicle flip over and kill the finest officer I have ever known. I have been on the funeral details of over 100 veterans as an official representative of the US military.

And now I watch as you, who I did respect for the ability to stick to your opinions, claim to have been a member of the military, and then when you were caught out in a lie, try to trivialise what you have said.

Something "silly" you said?

You have fouled the memories all those soldiers who have given their lives to everyone in this country.
Just to try and back up your opinion.

My suggestion would be to apologise, and then we can get this matter behind us.

Do not trivialize military service. Falsely claiming that you served in the military is not silly or trivial, nor is it merely a factual inconsistency or a spelling mistake. It is an affirmative lie.

It dishonors not only you but those of us that have served. It cheapens our lives and the lives of our wives, children and whoever else may care about the jobs we did. We were willing to take a bullet for this country. We gave up many things everybody else takes for granted. My daughter and my wife had to go for six months without me while I was on the USS Nimitz in 1991. Neither they nor I knew whether I would come back. I know many, many others who sacrificed more than I did. I know many others who continue to make those sacrafices now.

Claiming that you served in the military claims that you have made such sacrifices. Falsely claiming that you made such sacrifices just to perpetuate a pointless argument on the internet makes you a pathetic coward.

2001-12-24 09:56:42 AM
Hearing people who have served in the military talk about how everyone owes them because of the great service they did for our country really makes me sick. Of all the people who joined the service only one did it because he wanted to be a soldier and he joined the Marines. All the rest did it because they could get job training or money for college or because they were too stupid to get a real job. Don't give us you crap about how great you are and we all owe you something because you volunteered and then got paid and job training.
