When did being crap become fashionable? I blame "Survivor" myself.

Mark Burnett who created Survivor, also created the Apprentice.

I really enjoy watching the Apprentice....once a week. The fact that they are showing repeats on Wednesday nights goes to show you the depth of their programming.

When the Real World debuted I remember distinctly looking over at my best friend and prognosticating "you know, this is going to catch on. By 2010 we'll be watching the Running Man for real."

Anyway. . . . Hopefully Hef is on the case and is lining up Katrina for a spread.

Yeah, I can see how a show starring a guy with his brain in a cat can be as popular as this.

When did my countrymen turn into idiots?

Or is it that they were always idiots, and I am just slowly over the last ten years or so emerging from the idiot herd enough to see what idiots we all are? I mean, I remember that in Jr. High I was one of the idiots. But then it seems like half the people I knew stayed stuck there, believing everything they were told, watching what they were told to watch, liking what they were told to like, and not having a freaking clue that what you see on the news is rubbish. These are the people that CARE what Jennifer Lopez wears on her fingers.

Honestly, we're becoming repulsive. Or were we always? Because it seems to me like we're getting worse. And I am only 26.

The Networks have been doing this since SURVIVOR started. But back then, it was news because people were actually having parties surrounding its finale. And even then, it wasn't worth more than a 5-second mention on the news...

I doubt there's any such anticipation for the finale of THE APPRENTICE.

NBC turns into Trump TV

By DAVID BAUDER
Associated Press

Dateline NBC plans roughly two hours of stories about The Apprentice surrounding its finale next month, including a profile of star Donald Trump.

The plan may kindle a debate about whether television networks are using news programs less for news than for promotion.

''I think it's a disgrace,'' said Larry Grossman, a former NBC News president. ''It's clearly using the news division to hype the network's entertainment schedule. I can't imagine it's a serious, legitimate news issue, unless they're going to expose the program for some sort of scandal, which I don't think will happen.''

David Corvo, executive producer of Dateline NBC, said The Apprentice has become a cultural phenomenon that has fascinated his audience. Between commercials on the network and stories in the press, most TV viewers will be well aware of The Apprentice finale on April 15 before the Dateline NBC stories run the days before and after, he said.

''We're trying to respond to the interest,'' Corvo said. ''They don't need us to inspire the interest. It's sort of backwards.''

The Apprentice was the fourth most popular show on television last week, attracting 17.5 million viewers. Corvo said Dateline NBC hasn't reported on the show yet.

The full hour of Dateline NBC on April 14 will be devoted to a behind-the-scenes look at the boardroom game. The Trump profile will run April 16. About half of a two-hour Dateline that night will likely be about The Apprentice, he said. The newsmagazine will report on how business schools are using the reality show as a teaching tool, he said.

And there will be even more Trump on NBC that week. Three days before The Apprentice finale, NBC is airing the Miss USA pageant, which is partly owned by Trump; preceding it will a Miss USA edition of Fear Factor.

Jeff Zucker, a former Today show executive producer, is responsible for both NBC's news and entertainment divisions.

''We have the access that some others don't have because we're on the same network, and I'm trying to take advantage of it,'' Corvo said. ''I'd be nuts to let 48 Hours do it, wouldn't I? And I'm sure they would if they could.''

Tuning in

New episodes of The Apprentice air at 8 p.m. Thursdays on NBC (WSMV-Channel 4). The finale is April 15.

I don't understand. Isn't the whole point of that show unemployment? You don't get much more unemployed than "You're fired." Well, there is, "You're ass is totally fired, muthafarker," but that doesn't get nearly enough use in white-collar industry.

And the 5.6% unemployment rate number is not useful. Changes could mean a lot of things, including that people are changing jobs, or quitting the workforce, or that the economy is really bad. A more useful number is the number of people who can't work after 6 months; in a good economy, almost anyone loses a job can find a new one within 6 months, since there's always another firm out there hiring, so the number's low. Right now, that number is higher than usual.

Give the people their bread and circuses so as to keep them ignorant and distracted from the fact that their government sees humans as nothing more but expendable resources to be used in a grandose plot for world domination. Also note that when this plot enevitably fails, the same government has a "Mutually Assured Destruction" protocal which will scourge the entire Earth with nuclear hellfire and usher in a new Dark Ages. At that point, the same government can easily conquer the desolute and despaired populace through the false hope of religious faith.

And the 5.6% unemployment rate number is not useful.

That's certainly a valid point; it is hopelessly limited. However, people who ignorantly say that the 'unemployment rate is higher that it's ever been!' piss me off. It's clear they're reciting mantras, not making an informed judgement based on the issues.

As a lifelong admirer of 60 Minutes, I hope CBS has the stones to stay the course and continue pursuing worthwhile topics and exposing fraudulent behavior. I had high hopes for Dateline initially but they jumped ye ol' shark long ago to chase pop celebs and to shamelessly self-promote. 20/20 had good credentials early on as well...

Ok this thread is making me feel REALLY old. When I was in college I hated this kind of stuff, i.e. Dateline interviewing reality TV stars. Then in my mid-20's I realized that I was the smartest person on the planet, everything would be ok if they'd just listen to me (*ahem* name that song). The boob-tube was for the mind-numbed, dumber-than-me masses, and everyone in the govt was out to kill whales and control me. Now in my late 20's I realize that people are too lazy to create huge conspiracies, Wal-Mart is good cuz it saves you 50 cents on shampoo, and the govt, Hollywood, and every authoritarian figure you used to think was out to get you is just another person like you or me, doing a 9-5 job.

This isn't a high unemployment rate. The problem is that we were spoiled by a low unemployment rate, spurred by businesses with no real assets.

...Viacom (their parent company) is publishing the book?

No argument there. I won't defend everything 60 Minutes does, there have been a few obviously partisan decisions made this year already. I do feel, however, that their content has, for the most part, remained way truer to form than their fellow "news" magazines...

I agree on most counts. I am far from a conspiracy theorist.

But come on. Reality TV? There is NO excuse for that tripe. And covering it on a news show just insults people's intelligence.

People aren't out to get you, they're just constantly pandering to the lowest common denominator. And I am sick to death of it.

See, that's the part "The Matrix" got wrong. You just get to realize they're asleep. You don't get to step outside of the reality. What you try to find is some way of dealing with that which doesn't involve you going bonkers and creatively employing an AK-47 with multiple bananna clips.

Sux, don't it? (Still looking myself)

Hey hey hey - you've gotta look at this way - EVERYBODY'S doing terrorism and the economy. Dateline's just going for some hard-hitting covereage of something and shedding light on an issue that very few people know about, but still has an enormous impact on our everyday lives.

I agree with most of that, albeit not all. Not that it has much to do with the thread, other than with stupidity inherent in mainstream society, but if the government would let me get married and let me smoke a joint after work in peace, my respect for the establishment would increase about tenfold instantly (not that those are the only problems I have with the government, but it would be a huge farking start). As it is, though, the government really is out to get me.

As for the media, they're out to buy me with their crap capitalist commercialism and their fake reality shows that really do pander to the mind-numbed, dumber-than-me masses. I don't typically have a problem with news shows, even Dateline and such, but some of the inanity being spewed out on the public airwaves is downright offensive. And I realize that there have always been stupid things on television, but never at the quantity and popularity that you can find nowadays.

Dateline NBC, home of rigged exploding pickup trucks, moving China made clothing onto a "Made in USA" rack at Wal-mart for an expose and talking-walrus Lisa Myers. What a great show.

Myers is the worst of so-called investigative journalists. Willing to ignore pertinent facts while inflating tangential ones to make a story. From the BS I've seen on subjects that I'm familiar with, I can only imagine the crap she's coming up with on other subjects. I'm surprised she hasn't been hired away to 60 Minutes.
