His house on the Hampton's needs repairs too?

George Bush is a cancer. Michael Powell is a bigger cancer. Neither respects the first amendment or the Amercian people. The article is right on when it says that people are essentially being censored for speaking out against the Bush administration.

This article brings up some scary implications that could really hurt the American way of life. Despite the authors obvious, though unsaid, Democratic leanings, he makes some very good points about the current erosion of the Bill of Rights. Between this whole Janet Jackson Boob thing, the PATRIOT and PATRIOT II acts, and the Presidential-Industrial conspiracy, I think that our Founding Fathers would be shocked as to what the Government is doing now. Things are definately changing and not for the better.

God Bless the corporations who control us.

I am so thankful Jesus Murdoch and Clear tell us who to vote for (Republicans) and who to fear (Hillary and liberalnazis).

I don't even need to go to church any more. ClearChannel is close enough to worship for me.

I bet they would

Anyone keeping Michael Savage on the air but kicking Stern off obviously does not give a crap about decency.

2004-03-25 12:18:31 PM
Bush needs to go.

Clear Channel needs to get slapped with an anti-trust suit.

The FCC needs a major overhall. I propose we put George Carlin in charge.

2004-03-25 12:25:43 PM
Free speech has been pushed to the back of the bus as of late. We need a president that stands up for the Bill of Rights....

2004-03-25 12:26:44 PM
ThatDevGuy

So, in your opinion, telling a man that he should "Get AIDS and die, you pig" for being gay is more decent than Stern's titty-and-fart-jokes?

Obviously, when I say something on Fark, I'm stating my opinion. Pointing out that it's only my opinion is not an argument. It's a truism.

2004-03-25 12:29:35 PM
I think the real issue here is that Stern sucks ass. When are Opie and Anthony coming back?

2004-03-25 12:30:06 PM
Obdicut

Death and violence = fine
Sex = fine (just a different kind)

See, the FCC is being fair and equal!

The poor baby...

2004-03-25 12:31:47 PM
Not to flame, but Clear Channel was pulling this shiat well before the Bush administration.

I would accept however that the Bush administration has made it easier for Clear Channel to continue its media domination.

2004-03-25 12:32:27 PM
Hey mods, is it ok to post images from other threads? I see that "arguing on the internet" retarded picture all over the place, but if I'm out of place here just delete the post and let me know. I'm new here.

2004-03-25 12:33:40 PM
What's truly ironic is that Stern led the "we must support the preznit in his crusade against the Muslimians" brigade after 9/11. Now he's like Richard Clarke: another uberhawk fed up with Bush's lies and deceit.

Good for him.

2004-03-25 12:33:48 PM
Oh yeah, a company isn't thrilled about having Howard Stern on their roster. It's the end of the world.

/miraculously goes on with life

If Michael Savage is still on the radio for telling someone they should get AIDS and die, a caller on the Stern show for saying ni--er doesn't even come close to be as offensive.

Alas, Savage is a conversative puppet so they let him stay.

2004-03-25 12:35:03 PM
ThatDevGuy: you are right, the presence of people who want to step over the Bill of Rights in the name of "protection" is nothing new. And each time we have to gang up on these people and remind them where they live.

The term "witch trials" seems to be a very fitting description of Michael Powell's campaign.

2004-03-25 12:35:12 PM
Bad Bob... No!

Didn't you read the article? A guy got put off the air for saying the "N" word!

2004-03-25 12:37:12 PM
Is it just me, or is the n word nothing new on Howard Stern? Doesn't the KKK guy Daniel Carver always utter it everytime he is on?

Hasn't he been on Howard for like 15 years or something?

2004-03-25 12:38:14 PM
Meanwhile, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman examined the "close links" between George W. Bush and Clear Channel management (Clear Channels vice president Tom Hicks helped make G.W. a multimillionaire) and pointed out how "the absence of effective watchdogs" made this odd merger between the media and the government possible. "In the Clinton years the merest hint of impropriety quickly blew up into a huge scandal; these days, the scandalmongers are more likely to go after journalists who raise questions," he wrote.

Meanwhile The New York Times continues to be essentially a 12 page daily running advertisement for the Democratic Party.

These media bias stories are getting really tiring, people, stop taking everything verbatum, read between the lines, understand the source and take the time and effort to make up your own darned mind... AND stop worrying about the great unwashed middle America, they are smarter than you give them credit for.

2004-03-25 12:38:29 PM
Someone still needs to 'splain this to me. If you tune into Howard (or any radio show, for that matter), you have a pretty good idea of what you're gonna get. If you don't like it, slide in a CD or find your local NPR station!

And, Imaginary Friend, I'd LOVE to see George in charge! My favorite bit by him is fencing in the square states of Utah and Colorado (because it's easiest), use them to house murderers and child molesters respectively, then open the gate between the two once a week and televise the goings on. ;) He knows entertainment when he sees it!

2004-03-25 12:39:14 PM
That's really scary.

ClearChannel owns most of the stations here and all of them have either mysteriously lost one or more morning disc jockeys, or their morning shows are so tame now, it's just boring.

2004-03-25 12:39:58 PM
4 more years of Bush = the end of the American way

I'd vote for Sharpton twice before I'd vote for Bush. I can't believe people still support this idiot. Get your heads out of your arses people, he is a cancer to this country.

2004-03-25 12:40:13 PM
Let's see...I predict 453 comments, 424 of which are repeats from the other 27 Howard Stern articles posted on fark in the last month.

Yeah, but now you can always get your fill of AC/DC, Van Halen, and Bad Company!

Yeah dude, it had nothing to do with Stern talking smack about Bush the last couple weeks.

Also ironic that clear channel promoted pro-war rallies before invading Iraq.

Also ironic their executives are tied at the butt with Bush, including campaign contributions and stadium purchases.

I guess what the believer believes, the prover will prove.

2004-03-25 12:41:28 PM
Vote anyone but Bush!

2004-03-25 12:41:41 PM

I blame this whole mess on Opie and Anthony, and a certain 'balloon knot'.

And Stern needs me to worry about him ? The day he lets me hit on all the hot women on there, then, maybe I'll care.

2004-03-25 12:41:42 PM
Scary? Yes, but Obvious as Hell, too.
I blame all of you numbnuts that voted for this clown. You made this mess, take responsbility for the cleanup.

just because some people may not like what he is saying, doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to say it.

F the FCC
F Bush
F Clear Channel
and really - F Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for giving them a leg to stand on

Jim Norton is notorious for telling people to get AIDS, Hep C, Leukemia, dying, etc.... nothing new on that front.

Excellent idea. I also support the fencing in of certain states idea....

I just don't like that a few companies own every freakin station on the air. You can go from city to city and hear the same crap. I have even heard the local DJ's acting out supposed 'live' calls that I have heard others act out in other markets. They even use the same script.

I've been meaning to ask you-- are you a guru, a swami, or a mystic meshuggana?

2004-03-25 12:44:02 PM
The problem is that it involves Stern, who is considered to be the poster child for this sort of stuff. Many people can't see past "Stern" to see the real issue.

"If Michael Savage is still on the radio for telling someone they should get AIDS and die, a caller on the Stern show for saying ni--er doesn't even come close to be as offensive"

Agreed, but I think we all know that it was just an excuse for CC to get rid of Stern.

fark CC and the FCC

2004-03-25 12:44:14 PM
to all thouse who support the current administration and the new proposed rules concerning decency & media consolidation, consider this...

One day, the Democrats will grab control. Would you want someone like Tipper Gore making deicisions on "decency"?

This should NOT be a Dem/Rep argument, but rather an argument on the issues at hand

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

What will the Ministry of Information think of next?

2004-03-25 12:44:36 PM
I get so worked up on this topic I don't even know where to start.

Party issues aside, the FCC hands out fines based on vague rules with blatant bias 3 years after the fact and Clear Channel's "zero tolerance" policy a complete sham. Howard says vagina and it's bad, while Oprah can do an hour long show on it. Ryan Seacrest dropped the f-bomb on air TWICE but Clear Channel pretends it didn't happen when they should fire him by their own policy.

I applaud Howard for simultaneously fighting a goverment agency and a monoply while still having time to look at boobies.

The Howard Stern First Amendment Test!

Prove that you can say whatever you want at work just like Howard!

Go here: The Smoking Gun: Archive.

Now print out the page and take it to work.

Read it out loud for a few hours.

See what happens.

Congratulations! Just like Howard you are showing your First Amendment rights at work!

Did you get fired? Blame Bush!

Whee!

Never I would guess. What station would want to touch them in an era of $500,000 indecency fines?

2004-03-25 12:44:48 PM
Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the good old days before clear channel owned every radio station.

2004-03-25 12:45:00 PM
Holy crap! Buzzflash got linked at FARK? One of their opinion pieces? Wow. I view that site everyday. But they are definitely a partisan news site, even though they mostly just link to news articles from other, legitimate news sources (sorry, pubs, but Newsmax is NOT a legitimate news source). Still, cannot remember ever seeing this. The article is good though.

2004-03-25 12:45:02 PM
"Clear Channel will do anything they can, threaten me, go to my clients directly, anything to get control of the markets. . . . They're a clear example of what can happen with deregulation. They've ruined radio, as far as I'm concerned. And now they're licking their chops to be able to control more of what the public sees and hears." An anonymous ad agency owner, Salon.com, Feb. 19, 2003

And I always thought that it was video that killed the radio star.

ANYONE but Bush in '04.

So let me get this straigh...

The gov't breaks up Ma Bell...but lets Clear Channel continue to devour small outlets.

2004-03-25 12:45:47 PM
What do we expect from a government who enacts "free speech zones" three miles from presidential visits.
