They weren't paying the bribes to the right people?

I'm glad the Nevada Constitution prohibits redlight cameras. Those people are all crooks.

I feel bad for Emanuel.  He's not in the tank enough for the unions and doesn't get their support, but he's not reform-minded enough to reign in the patronage and graft and get the city's spending problems under control.

2015-08-31 08:28:11 PM
And less than zero of the proceeds will be returned to voters.

How did he lose part of his finger, BTW?

I think he reigns in patronage as well as any mayor Chicago's ever had.

That's like bringing in Paulie as your business partner, then suing him when he burns down your restaurant. What do you expect with these guys?

"It's about safety!"

Ok. Can we tune them to allow a car to break the plane of the stop line by an inch?

"Uhhh, no"

Ok. How about we allow a right turn on red after stopping for 4.9996 seconds instead of the legally required 5?

"Sorry, rules are rules!"

I was pulled over in Elko County by a cop who lied about how fast I was going so he could try to strongarm me into letting him search my car. Cameras aren't the only crooks out there.

Haven't driven in a year and I sailed right through one of these intersections when I thought a green arrow was a green light. Nobody even honked. There's something real dumb about politeness.

You can tell it's a Chicago news story because there's no need to explain to the reader terms like "bagman."  Everyone is already very familiar with mob-style shakedowns and other corruption.

Red light cameras suck but people who stop or creep halfway into the intersection should be ticketed.  With the back of an axe.  To the face.

/ESPECIALLY the assholes who creep forward right when you're trying to creep past to see if you can make a legal right turn on red

It sounds like Aaron Rosenberg got fired by the red light company. I guess they should have kept paying him.

Rahm was just reelected last year. He wants the $300 M to pay the City's share of the pensions to which they have been writing IOUs to, now those IOU have are due.

Beat me to correcting the demographics of the area.

I did a bunch if crane work at the old Verson Press building right there. A new electric arc furnace was built there to make tool grade steel. Supposedly Patti Blago had her hands in the real estate deal.

The city of Chicago was concerned about the noise effecting the surrounding neighborhood so a lot of money was spent on sound proofing the building.
Arc furnaces are very loud and use 10's of thousands amps to work.
What was overlooked (supposedly) was the giant presses used to shape steel cracking the foundations of the houses in the neighborhood.

Actually, on the south side, Madison to Roosevelt (12 blocks) is a mile, Roosevelt to 22nd (10 blocks) is a mile, and 22nd to 31st (9 blocks) is a mile.  Farther south than that, there are the standard 8-block miles.  On the north side, it's just 8-block miles.

/Don't as why.

24th and Western has a school/park speed trap not red light trap...you may be referring to Western and Cermak which indeed tries to catch me running reds to and from work.

Redflex stock down to 15 cents. Will probably be 5 cents tomorrow.

The execs responsible have (they say) all been fired. But I'll bet they ride off into the sunset while the investors take a Vin Diesel haircut.

On a related note: didn't the Republicans want to get rid of the SEC?

Not that I'm for red light cameras in the first place, but if we're going to have them, I sure as fark don't want some for-profit corporation running the system.

They're being forced into doing something because Redflex has already admitted to bribing officials in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio as well as Chicago. They're also looking into Redflex down in Florida, too.

IIRC how these things work, the former employee can sue on behalf of the government and then he gets a cut of whatever the government ends up recovering - but only if the government joins in his action. So, he filed a lawsuit, sent it over to Chicago City Hall, and talked them into taking a cut of his profits, essentially. I'm not sure if it's the same for municipalities, but it certainly applies to federal government corruption. Qui tam, I believe?

It is a cunning little side step.
You can't ever sue the government for very much.

Can you think of any other contractors to put on THE LIST?

Oh, there's a ton of them, especially in the medical field. There were some quite big qui tam judgments coming out of the "durable medical equipment" field a while back, I believe. That would be all those Rascal scooter types who were scamming Medicare for millions. Pharmaceuticals is a big one, too - manipulating the pricing for Medicaid/Medicare reimbursement purposes was red flagged nationwide for a while. Then there's the classics - overbilling the military for either material or services. I think Maersk got hit with a big one for inflating shipping costs to the Middle East in last clusterf*ck over there.

My personal choice is the prison contractors.
For abject failure at Protect and Rehabilitate.
Sweet sweet substitute for raising taxes IMHO.

The Guys have long since moved to the 'Burbs.  There are towns out in DuPage that were actually still dry.  Elmwood Park is good.  Forest Park is another.   The town cops make sure that no one is in town that doesn't belong there.  Any homeless drunks that wander in are picked up, tortured, and dumped in DuPage County, with the suggestion that they stay out of town.

The was a program called PADS in DuPage County where homeless could go to a series of churches and get a meal and a place to sleep.  Our church was in it for a few years.  It was one night a week for us volunteers.  Talked to an old lush that got picked up in Elmwood Park for 'vagrancy'...  The cops put him a strait jacket and cinched it up until he couldn't breathe.  They promised that if the found him in town again, they wouldn't stop...  Sorry old fart still went pale, talking about it.
