As opposed to the US medical system where robbery comes after admission to the hospital.

If you have enough money to waste more than a year's salary on a watch, maybe you should give that money to a soup kitchen and buy yourself a casio calculator watch.

i'm guessing that it didn't cost more than a year of her salary.

although at 22, i'm guessing it was nowhere near a year of her father or husband's salary.

I'm guessing she'll never have a salary.

But honestly, if you're gonna be epileptic and have $22,000, buy some seizure dogs.

Or maybe some medication. Or a special seizure monkey that will watch your purse while you flail about. Kinda like the trunk monkey that protects your car.

I hope they left her "I'm an Epileptic" bracelet on her wrist.

25K on a watch?  Seriously?  My Timex has been ticking for 5 years now and cost 34.95 at the local big-box store.

Gluttony is disgusting no matter how pretty the face.

Some people get a Rolex or other high-end timepiece from their company. Not that uncommon if you're in sales.

I have a thousand questions. Where was the cabbie in all this? Why was the window open? What kind of wierdo carries a $25G anything in their purse?

Bad idea:  Putting it in your purse.

And your $35 Timex - an item of convenience and fashion - is between 4 and 18 months of food for families in most of the developing world.  Your "cheap" watch is a height of decadence for around a quarter of the world's population.

In short, gluttony is relative.  Get a grip.

It's not that. I just never got the appeal of watches as jewelery. I wear a Casio G-Shock that's solar powered and gets the time signal from Colorado so it's always right to the nearest 0.1 second. I wouldn't trade it for a $25K Rolex.

I have a scar on my left wrist, right where a wristwatch would go, a scar that gets all red and inflamed and sore if I wear a watch, so I haven't done so for the last 25 years or so, about half my life. I don't really miss it, what with my cel phone giving me time and the prevalence of clocks everywhere in my daily routine.

Figuratively speaking. Obviously, I'd take the Rolex, sell it and buy a new Casio and spend the rest on hookers and blow, but surely you take my meaning. I prefer the Casio.

I am a idoit but I don't see why you'd want a Rolex unless you want to look like a 1980s investment banker.

For $25k you can get a nice Lange & Sohne, or Vacheron Constantin, or Breguet. Or a bottom end Patek.

I don't wear watches anymore either, and I own a Rolex (not even close to $25K though). I get it. Some people like Timex or Casio or whatever. Some people want a nice watch. There's nothing wrong with that, unless you're a Farker apparently.

MrBallou had the correct answer...trade the casio for the rolex, sell the rolex, buy a new casio and spent the remainder on hookers and blow.

I get some people want to wear nice things, but there has to be a point of diminishing returns on more expensive things.  A cheap watch is just as functional as an expensive one...in that they both keep time just fine.  the expensive one just looks, well, expensive.  If you want to wear something that says "I can afford to spend $25k" on a watch then don't be surprised that someone else assumes you could also afford insurance on the watch or don't care if it is lost/stolen.

does a $250k watch really look 10x more expensive than a $25k watch?  At those prices functionality cannot be the deciding factor.

as for men, i wouldn't wear a gold rolex unless i were retired, extremely tan and living in florida.

There's also a point where cheap watches don't make much sense, because of how often you end up replacing them. I wear a watch at work, because my hands get filthy and covered in chemicals, and I don't really want to dig around in my pocket with said nasty hands. For a few years I got cheap timex or casio watches from Walmart, but I would end up replacing them every few months.

Made the jump to a nicer watch, got a titanium band, shatter-proof seiko, and couldn't be happier. 5 years without replacing anything so far.

I did not spend 25k, though. I think I spent about $300.

Csb, I know.

Hyjamon: does a $250k watch really look 10x more expensive than a $25k watch?

to someone in the know, yes. i used to live in geneva, switzerland. rolexes were like BMWs - everybody wore them. the really chic banker types wore patek, a. lange & sohne, vacheron, etc. and everyone looked at your wrist to see what you were wearing. just having a little tourbillon window in your watch immediately let the person on the other side of the table know that you were able to afford a six-figure watch.

In NYC, having your valuables liberated during a medical emergency is a form of CPR.
She's lucky if she was left with shoes or underwear.
