So if all this crap (aside from the mass storage) just uses the power from the port, why's everything like $40?

2004-03-21 03:09:55 PM
Last year, there were mini-christmas trees for $10. Just a
bunch of LEDs powered off the the USB bus.

2004-03-21 03:10:58 PM
stupid people will buy anything.

2004-03-21 03:11:44 PM
USB devices are only supposed to draw up to 500 milliamps from the bus. At 5 volts, that's 2.5 watts. I'm not sure how much you can actually draw from the bus if you don't care about totally disregarding the spec.

How about a combination USB camera/flashlight/vibrator? That might be interesting.

USB sex toys... You know, there's gotta be a market for this. I mean, cyber sex could have a whole new meaning...

2004-03-21 03:25:35 PM
$35 for an ashtray that looks like a McDonald's Happy Meal toy. Color me impressed.

2004-03-21 03:25:41 PM
Hmmmm.

There's this guy in our office who always attaches a USB connector to his pants every morning and gets really irritated when he is asked to leave his desk for any reason.

I wonder if.......

2004-03-21 03:29:16 PM
That link is semi-not safe for work, btw

2004-03-21 03:29:36 PM
nightshifter, i think you forgot a NSFW marker...

Though I guess it's kind of understood if it's a link to a vibrator.

2004-03-21 03:34:21 PM

USB Homer

rorschach1:

Acutally, you really can't draw more than 500mA from most motherboard usb ports. There are current limiters inside the USB chipsets. Some external usb hubs allow you to take up to 1 or 2A per port. Some bus-powered scanners stipulate they must be plugged into a powered hub to work without an external adaptor.

500mA is quite a lot of current to run little devices though..

I think some of you must have rather limited sex lives.

Personally, I think anything less than a diesel-powered sex toy just isn't worth the time or trouble.

2004-03-21 03:53:39 PM
I fail to see the point if there is no software interaction of some kind.

2004-03-21 03:57:42 PM
b0rg9...the USB Homer is cool but...why in the hell would it not be compatible with Winblows XP? (aside from the obvious flame bait)

some of this stuff is cool...I want a USB coffee maker.
Anybody seen one?

2004-03-21 04:12:42 PM
Where can I get one of those USB Noodle Cookers? Sounds like a college student's dream come true.

Well, to go along with your USB ashtray, you might as well get your own computer cigarette lighter (granted, it's not USB, but still...)

2004-03-21 05:03:43 PM
If you're going to get a cigarette lighter, it's got to have the cup holder too.

2004-03-21 05:07:04 PM
That's what I'm missing... a USB Homer.

2004-03-21 05:08:13 PM
Geeze...show me a link to those bad boys. Someone actually thinks it's a good idea to have something like a dash-lighter in a computer?!?!?

2004-03-21 05:09:18 PM
Isnt it cute...

2004-03-21 05:11:39 PM
Thermaltake X-Ray cigarette lighter and beverage holder

Just make sure your power supply is good for an extra 6.5 amps on the 12 volt rail.

2004-03-21 05:32:14 PM
Probably more strange USB devices than you thought existed...including a vaccuum, a humidfier, a noodle warmer...and of course, those X-mas lights mentioned above.

MightyMouse:

Fark uses html, not that weird BBS code you're trying. Use things like More Strange USB devices instead.

HTML off on purpose.

2004-03-21 05:56:18 PM
Yeah...dug into the links a bit and saw those lighters are for real.

Perhaps I'm closed-minded , but that doesn't seem like a good idea. ESPECIALLY the ash tray in your computer .

2004-03-21 07:09:57 PM
Geez... talk about a "human interface device"

2004-03-21 07:25:14 PM
Could this be considered "hardware"?

All this computer hacking is making me thirsty. I think I'll order a TAB. [presses TAB key] Awp...no time for that now, the computer's starting."
