will he need sunglasses, or a flashlight?

If you believe the federal government, any exposure to sunlight, including the tiny amount you might get in a blizzard at midnight, requires the use of SPF-15 sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Mars gets about half as much sunlight as earth but more UV at the surface because of the thin atmosphere. Use protection.

Fear "Jake" the cat.

Putting a name in quotes makes it scary.

Don't tell me that. I'm an ego-maniac and can't handle compliments. They just go right to my head.

I think a plane was flying in the wrong spot over the NEVADA DESERT.

Since no one else seems to be mentioning it - YES it WAS a time exposure (of about 15 seconds or so if I remember correctly). If you could of seen it in person it would just have looked like a dot moving across the sky. This can happen when a satellite is at the right angle to reflect the sun.

In fact, the reason NASA suspects it many be Viking 2 is because they can gauge the speed and direction it was moving from the length and orientation of the "streak".

so THAT'S where he hid his Weapons of Mass Destruction!!! Foolish American pigs will never find them there.
Didn't it occur to you Farkers that that is why Bush is throwing money at NASA?...

If the UFO was not a shooting a star then it could have been one of seven out-of-commission spacecraft that still orbit Mars

In other news, apparently the BBC or its Science correspondent has started using ghostwriters located in India, to save labour costs...

Oh yeah... I'm sure it's U.S. or Russian space junk and not one of the millions of chunks of rock from the nearby asteroid belt.

Mars is a lifeless planet. No warp signature = no alien visitors. Get over it.

"/farking morons....."

Here's a question: is the bigger moron the one making a claim for alien beings, tongue planted firmly in cheek, or is it the guy who actually believes that those claims are being made with any seriousness. Golly, that's a corker.

Or the one who assumes he knows himself to be the one of the only planetary species in the universe.

"Whatever it was, Spirit was lucky to catch sight of the UFO as the rover's main mission is to look downwards to study rocks and soil on the planet."

Sounds like Spirit's slacking off.

That must be where Saddam is hiding his WMDs!

Well, of course it's quite likely that a camera with a 1 degree field of vision that happened to be swinging into position to look at a rock managed to catch one of 6 man made objects having reentered the atmosphere at that moment. Very likely, and the obvious explanation.

Man, what the fark are they smoking at NASA? The most likely thing for it to be is a meteorite, isn't it???? Why was that not the first choice???

Think about how difficult it is to try to find the space shuttle or the space station orbiting at night, when you're *trying* to find it and it's *possible* to see it, and you've got your complete peripheral view to utilize... It's impossible for it to be anything other than a meteorite, but I want to know why that wasn't the explanation....?

The satellite wasn't reentering. Satellites reflect sunlight while in orbit. If it were reentering, it probably would have been much brighter and irregular.

Cranky Bastard

Not really an answer to your question, but if you look at the moon, it's albedo is like a tenth that of the earth. If you bring it back to earth and look at it in broad daylight, moon dust is black. Yet astronauts wore gold-plated visors (albeit for sun protection) and compared the stuff to snow. Pictures also show it as pretty bright. I bet your eyes would adapt to Mars over time. Mars is also not all that much further from the sun than earth. I think the hazy atmosphere would have a greater effect.

Covering all the angles, John Kerry was quoted as saying
"I actually did see it before I didn't see it"

"I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it"
