I think it'd be warm being the Caribbean and all.

Hey, we still own something in the caribbean? Cool. Let's sell it.

As an official representative *ahem* of her Britannic Majesty's Government, I open the bidding for Turks and Caicos at 100 million. A bargain for such prime real estate. Final winner to deposit the money in my... I mean, "The Government's" unlisted account in Lichtenstein. I will call to confirm deposit from a non-extradition country.

The sun will never set on the Canadian Empire.

Knowing the Canadian government (as it is right now) they'd probably make the official language French and give all the money to the 1 French-speaking person on the island.

Canada has a sphere of influence?

Cheaper than the money we've poured into the Maritimes in the past 50 years.

After failed attempts in the 1970s and 1980s...

I think that pretty much sums up what will happen this time around. Still, I wouldn't mind hearing our national weather reports in mid-January, with something like a high of 22C.

2004-03-15 04:24:44 PM
Kinda like "feel-good" colonialism or something. Could be interesting.

No ganja? What's the point?!

fark that. take a lesson from the USA. Never give anything to malcontents, ever. Negotiations where you have to give up anything is completely unacceptable. Terrorists are easy enough to deal with after the fact.

The only benefit for the islanders would be a discount prescription program? This seems like a good deal. Not.

does canada have a navy?

The Great White North Carribean ? Hey, hosehead, take off, eh mon !

First the Turks and Caicos Islands...Next...THE WORLD!!! We must stop this Canadian Imperialism today!!!

WE MUST MARCH ON OTTAWA. (That's the capital, right?)

2004-03-15 04:26:38 PM
It's time for some regime change before those reckless Canadians impose their dictatorial imperalism on the poor people of Cockburn Town.

There have been waves of talk about this for the past few months, and I'm hoping it really comes through. Because I want to move somewhere where it's always warm, but I'd like to stay in Canada...

... I've been wearing shorts all winter.

spending our canadian dollar somewhere where it doesn't rain or snow 10 months of the year? once WestJet has a seat sale out there, i'm there!

IT would be a pretty big economic boon for the region. There is a preference for vacationing in areas that are still your own country. Amercians go to Hawaii and Puerto Rico preferentially partly becasue they can "stay and spend in amercian" The french do it with their colonial islands.

IT would be a southern vacation spot where Canadians could rely on Canadian laws, courts, banking, food and drug safety regulations, no need for passports or customs or INS.

Ironically, back after the battle of the Plains of Abraham, the British were interested in getting the Caribbean island of Guadaloupe, but the French gave them Quebec instead.

SWEET, as a Canadian I think this would be so farking cool. I travel to the caribbean all the time and its hell having to check through customs at every little island. I would so buy a little bungalow and hang out there during our fall. God I hope this happens. SURFDORK, will you come visit me?

Turks and Caicos is unknown?

I am all for it although I wouldn't
know who to align myself with.
Turk?.....
Caico?.....
Turk?.....
Caico?.....
The mind boggles.
(I guess Cuba will become even cheaper to vacation in. HOO-RAY!)

kind makes me glad I've kept my Canadian citizenship active.

woo hoo

2004-03-15 04:34:13 PM
wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to me. i can't afford to travel in my own part of the country let alone all the way to the carribean. it would be cool tho. hell, if the US can have puerto rico and hawaii (they can keep alaska), why can't we have turks and caicos?

for those of you misinformed about the weather in canada. no it does not snow all year and no we don't live in igloos.

where i live, there are quite a few US places further north than i (detroit is north of me). i find it hilarious that some americans drive over here with skis on their cars....in july.

2004-03-15 04:35:47 PM
Ok, I think the idea will never get off the farking ground, and Canada is delusional, however I will throw my full weight behind it ONLY if you promise that you make the poor islanders speak french!

The next thing you know, they'll be turning into little cheese eating surrender monkies.

Being the politically over-correct nation that we are I wonder how long before the national anthem line gets changed from "the true north strong and free"

I would love to see this happen. I'd go in a few years as soon as I finish paying off last year's trip to maui. Expeeeensive.

Reminds me of that south park episode about time shares.

Repeat after me: "I've got a little place in the caribbean"

2004-03-15 04:37:24 PM
Does that mean we'd have a naval base there?

So that'd be what, Canadian Forces Caribbean Area? That would beat the hell out of CFNA HQ Yellowknife.
Seriously though, what would it cost to extend our sovereignty into the Caribbean?

I pay enough taxes already.

Since Canada is still part of the UK and the Turks and Caicos and still under the UK I fail to see what the problem is now

2004-03-15 04:38:02 PM
OH MY GOD, THEY'RE FLANKING US!

./time to invade ... um... Latvia. Yea. Because it is cold there, too. And WMDs.

2004-03-15 04:38:10 PM
I hope it happens.. can you imagine telling your buddies you're going to warm up in Canada for your winter holidays?

2004-03-15 04:39:04 PM
For anyone, like myself, wondering exactly where.

2004-03-15 04:39:45 PM
I was behind this proposal in the 80s, and I'm behind it now. What the hell did they mean by "racial tension"? Every single one of those islanders could move to Toronto tomorrow, and not change the multicultural mosaic one bit. Meanwhile, me, Mrs. Adman12 and 24,998 of our closest friends will happily take their place to become coconut farmers, or privateers, or something like that.

Ouroborus - You are woefully misinformed as to the nature of Canada's political situation. We're not part of the United Kingdom, any more than Australia or New Zealand are.

I beg your pardon? Part of what now?
It's pronounced "Commonwealth".

"'In the long term, what is so absolutely vital for Canada is to expand our sphere of influence,' says Conservative MP Peter Goldring, a driving force behind the Turks and Caicos movement."

Umm, why? Can any Canadians out there help me to understand this one? I thought you guys weren't into the whole imperialism thing. That's one of the things I've always liked about Canada. Of course, if it means that prices in the Turks will now be in weak Canadian dollars, I'm in.

Here's a lesson for you american's on how to take over a Carribian Country.

Hell while we're at it (taking over the carribian) we should Take over Hati (So the Quebecers ar'nt the only french speakers) and cuba (Communisum failed, But canada's social system is a good fall back, plus with all the american increase of tourisum there the countries would be able to support themselves like the Prov. withen 10 years.

Then we start accepting States (Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississipi, Oaklahoma, Arkanasas, Kansas, Coldorodo, Nebraska, North and South Dakota.) Not only does that bring in a nice pathway to Canada south, but it splits up some states that really fail to get attn. Put them together to make a provance and you really gotta economic powerhouse. And then USA east and USA west can break apart and we'll (the world) never have to deal with the Bush Family again. (Plus i'm sure those in the states as part of Canada would like that the PM has no real power other then being a signitory.

Um, the UK never officially released Canada, and when ever Canada is not in the room, the UK giggles and tells everyone how owend you really are. Honest they do.

Wake up and smell the back bacon

Ha ha.
