2004-03-15 09:33:00 AM
Has it already been 40 years?

I want Romulan Ale - all this human stuff is good and all but I want a blue beer that'll knock my socks off.

2004-03-15 09:38:04 AM
Earth wants green women.

2004-03-15 09:40:47 AM
Yeah, Transporters and a Holodeck. You know what you want to use the holodeck for, don't you? Oh yeah.

There was an episode of The Next Generation (and it was on recently) where they are taking a "gift" to some alien ruler. This "gift" was in the form of a hot alien babe who makes all men get ultra-horny. She is meant for the alien ruler, but she gets Riker all hot 'n bothered when he takes her to her quarters. As he leaves, he signals the bridge "Riker to Bridge! If you need me, I'll be in holodeck three."

Oh yeah...

wireless personal communicators
They had them 40 years ago. They were called Walkie Talkies.

I don't get to use my Captain's Log nearly as often as I would like, but that's a different kind of technology.

With everyone busy flaming Spain, I wonder if anyone will notice this thread...

2004-03-15 09:50:02 AM
minoridiot

Yeah, but now they LOOK kinda like the ones in the show! My cell phone however, can't dialup someone in outer space.

2004-03-15 09:50:43 AM
Damn it ...I want a photon torpedo

no wait that didn't sound right!

2004-03-15 09:50:43 AM
Thank god for rotary number dials, otherwise I'd have to rely on digital readouts.

2004-03-15 09:51:52 AM
I just stopped by here on my way to the Spain flame war, but I just had to say...

Where's my goddamn tricorder? And phaser? I want them...and I don't even know what a tricorder does!

2004-03-15 09:52:16 AM
I want those extra pointy boobies...oh wait, we're talking technology, not boobies...sorry...

2004-03-15 09:52:57 AM
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

2004-03-15 09:52:58 AM
Weaps, was that the episode with Famke Janssen? That was the first time I saw her, even before Goldeneye.

/nerd alert

2004-03-15 09:54:32 AM
Is a story like this mandatory every 5 years or so? Seems like at least once in that span there's always some piece about how we are LIVING IN THE FUTURE, with Star Trek tied in to further illustrate that point.

2004-03-15 09:55:29 AM
I'm still waiting for an Agonizer that I can use on my co-workers.

2004-03-15 09:57:29 AM
including nuclear wessals

2004-03-15 09:58:44 AM
ok. I'm living in the future now, but most of my stuff is still in the past. I only hang out in the present to be closer to my stuff.

2004-03-15 09:59:03 AM
And see, this why nobody likes the show "Enterprise". The technology is no longer as far fetched as what is in 1964, 66-69. Even the grocery store has automatic sliding doors!

2004-03-15 09:59:15 AM
I have witnessed this technology in action. I ran into an old friend, but saw that he now had a goatee. As a result I knew he was an evil counterpart of an old friend so I killed him.

Weaps

Yeah I was kinda wondering about that too.

Good use for the holodeck.

2004-03-15 10:00:42 AM
Remember the episode in which Spock made butterscotch pudding...In only mere minutes.

I can't wait till they invent instant pudding.

Oh and foot coverings...Yeah foot coverings!

2004-03-15 10:00:45 AM
I got this baby because I always wanted a communicator thingy......it makes a wee noice when you 'flip' it too...

/geek

Call me when we can create a holographic Leah Brahms.

2004-03-15 10:02:07 AM
can't wait for the holodeck. helloooo harem.

2004-03-15 10:02:10 AM
Ouroborus You Sir have obviously done way too much LDS.

Worst job of the future:

Holodeck deck mopper.

2004-03-15 10:06:02 AM

I want Spock's cool Vulcan guitar-lyre. That was my favorite episode, with Spock jamming w/the space hippies.

2004-03-15 10:06:48 AM
Has genetic engineering produced any tribbles yet?

2004-03-15 10:07:26 AM
me in the night: Posts like yours are the reason I read FARK.

/applause

Oh, and Spain sucks.

/obligatory?

2004-03-15 10:08:10 AM
What I wouldn't give for a localized Genesis device...

2004-03-15 10:09:13 AM
Yeah you can buy a tribble, but it don't reproduce...I think FAO Swartz had them for a while. My wife made a bunch of furry covered balls a few years ago as a gag for a trek freak and I have one sitting by my computer as we speak....kind of silly really.

BTW, shouldn't this have had an "obvious" tag?

2004-03-15 10:09:18 AM
Good point, ABQGOD

even now a days we have 'tricorders' (checkout scanners that can access info from the barcode) and automatic sliding doors.

still waiting for a phaser rifle.

2004-03-15 10:11:34 AM
Nuclear wessels still absent.

2004-03-15 10:12:15 AM
Yeah yeah. If anyone is interested, i'm culling through old "world of tomorrow" newsreels and archaic sci-fi books in an attempt to write a modern book. Haven't got a title yet but i'm kind of calling it "The tommorow that time forgot".

It's about the predictions for the future made by genrations previous, and wether or not they have come true yet... I want it to date back as far as the old play: "R.U.R.", up through modern cinematic Sci-fi.

There's allready a chapter devoted to star trek. it's hard stuff to work through though, considering how maniacal ST fanboys can be about their gadgetry. Some even take offence when i compaired a modern Cell-phone to the ever-present communicator.

There's also a chapter devoted entirley to claims made by Sci-fi movies about how soon the future was coming. I'm on the lookout for any Sci-fi film that makes reference to the year it's set in within the context of the film. (like "Escape from New York" set in 1999 of all times)

It's still pretty rough around the edges, but with any luck i can secure a publishing deal, maybe get it as a kind of college textbook...

2004-03-15 10:12:55 AM
me in the night: Why would Ouroborus doing Mormons be noticeable on Fark?

2004-03-15 10:14:52 AM
NeoBad

There is something really obscene about your post.

I can't quite put my finger on it.

Oh wait!There it is!!!

2004-03-15 10:14:59 AM

I'll take it - do you have one in blue?

2004-03-15 10:17:52 AM
binnster

Surely a green bird is ideal for st patricks day? You'd get loads of free beer and shiat(probably)

2004-03-15 10:20:35 AM
The way they use the holodeck in ST:TNG etc. is really lame, I mean come on how little imagination do these charcters have? You have the divice that can recreat anything, _ANYTHING!_, you can think of, and all they do is recreat stuff that exists.

Where are the holodeck programs that'd make a LSD trip seem boring? Total waste.

2004-03-15 10:23:14 AM
Um, lots of spelling error, sorry.

Two that stand out:
'device'
'recreate'

2004-03-15 10:23:35 AM
What are these "cell phones" the article speaks of? Anyone ever seen one?

Cool idea...

2004-03-15 10:23:36 AM
Can anyone truly do the Vulcan neck pinch?
(I know, not technology, just cool)

2004-03-15 10:24:21 AM
blumf:

You forgot one:

"error" = "errors"

/joking

2004-03-15 10:25:11 AM
Just as long as they make that machine that creates a perfect Martini everytime, I'm happy.

/reaches for the gin...

2004-03-15 10:25:25 AM
Oh yeah everyone check your calendars...today is
National Fart on a Fat Kid Day.

2004-03-15 10:28:58 AM
