media hype...and you all fell into it. might as well have been titled "Janet's Tit" or "GW's War" - you bought into it hook line and sinker.

Damn, you know that's SO true. Now I gotta get back to The Apprentice, Survivor, American Idol, ...

ok, does anyone else think Bob Berney, the president of New Market films whose mug is one of the photos on that page, looks a lot like Bobcat Goldthwait? And both their names are Bob too. Hmmmmm.

The people didn't hand out fliers outside of a church. They did it in a movie theatre. In Austin, the Scientologists do the same exact thing. It's really easy just to toss the paper in the garbage, or not accept at all.

With as much money as he has yes.

Wasn't is Jesus himself who said something along the lines of... it's easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than it is to get a wealthy man into heaven?

a prayer card is a card that people have been handing out to others going into this movie. i read the book that it was based on, and i have no problem with people using this movie for religious purposes.

my problem is this: a friend of mine was tricked by a girl into seeing this movie. the girl said that it was going to be a date but when they got there they had to sit apart because he was an "unconverted." that is bull.

sorry this reply is so late but you get one hour of work in and look what happens. plus i resent the moron of the day reward. gotta love the fundies

Christians don't sit around plotting your conversion

Actually, my family has been trying to do the exact same thing to me...hasn't worked so far.

Im stoned and agnostic. Guess what? I liked the movie. Its just a movie/story and most likely not true. At least not that part about him rising from the dead. People are too uptight period. They either love it cause its Jesus or hate it cause its Jesus. I laughed when Jesus got beat down.

I don't need to see the farking movie to criticize it.

I don't need to see a spatter film. Spatter films suck.

DrBenway The difference is, you'd have to give the pieces of paper away thinking you were helping people. Christians don't purposefully try to piss people off with their beliefs. Not intentionally, or they're not very good Christians. I'm guessing you're thinking of something that would offend/aggravate everyone in the church, on purpose.

I agree, I think that was definitely the wrong way to approach things - how can you start a relationship concerning truth with a lie? And alienating the person you're trying to get to understand christanity simply makes it worse.

I hope that you don't think that all christians are like this.

What's the difference whether they do it outside a theatre, or I do it outside a church?

Very cool!

Besides the fact that I liked the movie (saw it twice), "The Passion" is worth cheering for because:

1. It's a low-budget independent film
2. Hollywood rejected it
3. A lot of snobs hate it
4. It's not another stupid Biblical movie with Romans with elegant British accents and obviously dyed-skin actors.
5. It's almost avant-garde... perhaps our generation's answer to Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc"

Jesus Chainsaw Massacre is a pretty stupid name anyways... the scourging scene is about half-way into the movie. It really annoys me that people claim that all 127 minutes are blood and guts.

As a side-note, I wouldn't be surprised if Roman scourging was WORSE than how it was portrayed in the movie. We're talking about an empire that burned cities to the ground for revenge and crucified most of the surviving slaves in the Third Servile War.

1. News flash: Indie flicks do not have $30 million+ budgets.
2. Let's all root for Mel Gibson, a real underdog in Hollywood.
4. No, it's just another stupid biblical movie, only with the violence we've come to expect from the Bible.
5. Avante-garde? LMAO!

no i used to be a practicing catholic and i dont think that all christians are like that. i know that they arent, its just a really deceptive way of doing something. This was the first time i had ever heard of things like that. the whole point of the "date" was not to start a relationship. we found out later that every member of the church was supposed to be bring a nonmember for conversion.

No, he's saying if you knew anything about the Bible, you'd know the answer to that. If you are actually curious, then you probably are a little weak on the theology. Just a fact. If you believe he did, you don't believe what the Bible has to say. If you believe in the Bible, you believe he didn't.

Bravo, inspired by the film presents The Fashion of the Christ,

Wow....way to steal a joke from the Simpsons 40 minutes after it ended....

(For those who missed it, Homer, Bart and Lisa were at the movie theater, and one of the film titles on the marquee was 'The Fasion of the Christ')

I'm surprised no one picked up on the blatant plagiarism.

I hope I'm not the only person who was disapointed by this article--I was really hoping for an underground movie called "Jesus Chainsaw Massacre." You know, like "Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter."

Not another "people only bash xianity and not other religions" comment...

One reason is it's okay to pick on a majority and not a minority. Also, when muslims start showing up at my door trying to convert me to islam, then I'll start bashing Islam, but for now, it's just xians and mormons.

I totally agree - I'm a christian, but I disagree with pushy tactics, since it's more likely than not to jade non-believers even more - and they're likely to have a shaky grasp on the message of the gospel to start with if they're requiring members to bring people to be converted.

However, I disagree with your general assumption that that's exactly what's going to happen should you choose to see the movie - you make it sound like all christians are doing this and it's happening everywhere.

Hate to burst your bubble but blatant displays of ignorance are not enough to offend me or my sensibilites. While I believe there are no stupid questions I believe that ignorance and lack of respect, common traits of all generations following mine, can produce some rather humorous questions that are best answered with flip remarks since any thought that might be put into answering them would be a waste of time and energy.

All we need is a good single-episode film set a few years later with the Christians drawing and quartering someone for everyone to realize that it's more about human barbarism than anything religious.

2004-03-14 10:15:30 PM
Okay, let's try some different titles for the movie:

The Amityville Jesus Christ Horror

JesusChristBusters

Jesus Christ: Resurrection
(oops, that would be the sequel)

Jesus Christ Goes to Jail

The Silence of the Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ: Insurrection

I could go on, but there isn't any point. I just plain like The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.

And now for some closing music:

Christ! You know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
They way of things are going
They're going to crucify me.

First....that is asinine liberal thinking on the majority/minority thing, and is exactly what leads to loathing and repression of the minority. And second, you seem to be confusing Christians and Mormons with Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons....I have NEVER known of a single Christian to go door-to-door soliciting. But hey....if it's not what you believe, then lump them altogether....yet another liberal pillar.

The result to a Christian is what is in mind, but not like you think. They are concerned with "Somebody else is going to get to know God again" or "Somebody is still lost for now". They don't try to push crap on people that they don't want. If you don't want it, just say you don't or throw it away.

Handing out fliers that piss people off in front of a church is a different animal. Your goal, your only goal, is to piss people off or offend them. That's the only reason you're trying to give them the fliers (hypothetically). Sure, Christians know they may offend someone, but that's not the result in mind. Even one more soul saved from damnation is preferable to making a couple of people angry because they are easily offended, basically, by something a bunch of scholars and Christians wrote millenia ago. Besides, they can just throw it away. Your fliers, every church member will throw away, and probably disregard.

2004-03-14 10:16:30 PM
The only good thing about the movie doing this well is that I haven't seen any foolish posts in the last little while about "what a brave risk" Mel took in making this movie. Releasing a movie about Jesus in a country with probably the higest concentration of moneyed fundamentalists in the world is a good move (well highest concentration of moneyed christian fundamentalists). This was probably the surest thing in the history of cinema.

So if Spielberg took $50 million of his own money and "independently" made a big-budget action programmer, he could market it as an indie flick? Makes sense.

It's still going strong....my wife and I went to see it last Sunday in our town....sold out. We went to the 20-screen multiplex about an hour away today to see it, where it's showing on two screens....we got tickets, but it was a packed theater. I couldn't believe it sold out last week....*shrugging*

I love how you decided to leave out the fact that Karl Marx was the one that actually said that - of course it's true, just like everything else he's said, right?
