"Under the proposal, Hershey bars would be banned, but not Kit Kats because they're made with flour and wouldn't be considered a candy."

Cookies is made with flour. Potato chips is...potatoes! Corn chips is...corn! Instead of soda they will buy Kool-Aide for the kids. I could go on and on but I think my point is made. That this proposal is pointless.

they should eat organic. it may cost more, but the long term is fewer health problems and saner poor people. they might even learn something from eating healthy

Why don't we just
LET THEM EAT CAKE!

This won't stop food stamp-recipients from trading them for drugs, then.

Kit Kats should be banned due to their addictive quality.

How about we get these asshats jobs.

CNN.com has a slightly more detailed article:

If the U.S. Department of Agriculture approves, Minnesota would be the first state to impose such restrictions.

When I was a lad, I worked checkout at a major supermarket..we had people all the time who got food vouchers from charities..and they all said had in red writing on them "No Soft Drink, Cigarettes or confectionary."

Poor people are asshats?!? Here's hoping you never become one. It's no damn fun at all.

jeeze, they'll have to pay full price for candy...gawd we americans are cruel pigs!

How come I always get in the line behind the lady who's trying to buy dog food with her stamps?

This is a silly law. You can buy chocolate, cream and sugar and make your own candy. Or fruit and sugar. Like my mother did in the 50's.

2004-03-13 07:35:08 AM
I used to work at a grocery store and the only thing these people (with very few exceptions) would buy were: steak, doritos, pop, and cereal.

I would get so pissed cause I was working my ass off so that their lazy fat asses could eat better than my parents who had 3 jobs.

Organic just means you eat more bugs and shiat. It's no better for you. It's better for the environment, but check it out - plants contain chemicals all on their own! That's right, all kinds of nasty insecticides & stuff are already in the plants! And "organic" foods are more susceptible to pathogen contamination.

http://www.cgfi.org/materials/articles/2002/nov_06_02.htm

So you might think you're doing yourself a favor, but you're just doing the environment a favor. That's a good thing no doubt.

2004-03-13 07:48:20 AM
zelet - man you were poor if Doritos and Pop made up a food group that was better then what you were eating.

Was road kill on the menu?

2004-03-13 07:54:59 AM
WIC already puts limitations on the sorts of food that can be purchased - it generally has to be "healthy" and it seems to be a pretty good program.

This sounds ok to me, even w/ the loopholes.

/naive?

I used to just cringe when these people would arrive at the convenience store. First, the mom would give each of 12 kids a one-dollar food stamp. Each kid would come in and buy one peice of 2 cent candy, and take the change back to Mom.

Mom would come in and buy beer, chips, candy, Ho-ho's. . .

Actually, if the recipient has to resort to making their own candies and confectionery treats that would save them money for healthy food choices.

I understand the anger of witnessing people pay for expensive food with food stamps. I worked in a factory for awhile back in Detroit. I had two small children at the time (adults now) and watching these people purchase food I couldn't afford really was upsetting and demoralizing.

Mike_Bolton

There is no such evidence that organic is healthier than conventionally produced products. In fact I have seen studies suggesting just the opposite. Don't fall for the lies.

so no more candy, just steak and shrimp only then?

/true story

2004-03-13 08:22:04 AM
Hmm, sounds like a good idea.

And it's not because they want the poor to eat healtly, they're trying to teach them simple economics. If you're poor, try to save your money on food you need, not crap like candy and soda.

I raised my son alone without any aid from his dad(gone and not to be found, better off)I got laid off from 1 of my 2 jobs and tried to apply for stamps till I got another job but because I had 1 job and was going to school I was denied.
System doesnt work unless your a lazy babybreeding crack ho

BTW..When I was in the place applying the other moms were there with better cars, more blingbling and the biggest hair weaves and drag queen nails money could buy not forgeting the nikes and designer clothes too!!

Still pisses me off to this day

I made the mistake of giving my brother a place to parole to. He thought he was paying rent by buying me food with his food stamps. Still has not figured out why I would regularly slap him on the side or back of his head for "no reason". Gone now.

2004-03-13 08:54:49 AM
Obesity, and all its related ills, such as diabetes, is to a large degree a class problem. In short, poor people are fatter that people of better means. For many reasons they seem to pick the food that is the worst for them.I suppose this is an attempt at social engineering to get people to change their eating habits, and improve their health.

2004-03-13 08:58:26 AM
Under the proposal, Hershey bars would be banned, but not Kit Kats because they're made with flour and wouldn't be considered a candy

Doesn't suprise me. The legislature is probably just using existing state sales tax code to define what "candy" is. State laws have all kinds of whacked out definitions concerning food categories. In Tennessee, candy is defined as a sweetened item that does not contain flour nor is required to be kept cool.

2004-03-13 08:59:09 AM
nothing like being behind someone in the grocery store line when they pay for their groceries in food stamps and then they pull out a roll of $20s to pay for their cigarettes and booze....a roll of farking $20s....

yeah, let the state add Hershey bars to their "cash" list. Hell, if I had my way take all prepared foods off the acceptable list. It's not like they don't have the time to prepare it.

2004-03-13 09:02:09 AM
Hey now, I'm on food stamps (well, it's not really called "food stamps" anymore, it's EBT). I'm NOT lazy, nor am I a crack whore. Just disabled.

And I don't buy "junk food". I buy about 20lbs of hamburger, potatoes, canned foods, etc.

Just because some people (well, ok, about 30%) abuse the program, it's no reason to bash EVERYONE who is on it.

2004-03-13 09:03:56 AM
Why don't they just make mutritious pellets for poor people, and give them 10 pound bags of the stuff? After all, they can't be trusted to make their own choices...

Why don't they just make nutritious pellets from poor people?

Cuddles_in_KY - you are the type of people that this program should be helping. However, it's not funny unless we have crack ho's and lazy people to swing at.

2004-03-13 09:25:46 AM
If these people want to feed themselves and/or their kids cookies, candy and other crap, let them do it on their own dime, not mine. That said, in Minnesocialist-ota, the "poor" have their own lobbyists, advocacy groups, etc. to protect their "rights" and shake down even more money from people who actually work.

/end rant

2004-03-13 09:32:01 AM
damn straight they shouldn't be buying candy.

I think pop might be going a bit overboard though, how much milk can you drink?

seems like it would be hard to police... especially with that "made from flour" bullshiat at the end... candy is candy who gives a shiat what it's made from.

2004-03-13 09:51:40 AM
How dare these people try to get a little pleasure out of life. They should be limited to flour and turnips, and not those fancy kinds of turnips either!

Minne is on the right track, but seems to be missing the mark a bit. With a little guidence this could be a solid method to reduce the number of fat asses in the US.

2004-03-13 09:57:32 AM
Let's remember that kids get fed by food stamps. And even if I don't agree with their food choices or condone the behavior of those that just sit on their butts kids need to be fed. Some of them will grow up and continue the cycle. Some of them will become hard workers and want to give their children better. Still, the kids are innocent and need to eat.

I like the WIC program because it is SPECIFIC free coupons for basic items. Milk, cheese, non-sugared cereal, beans, and rice. In fact, if you are on a grocery budget, you will see the WIC label on the shelf by the cheaper items.
But--that is "boring "food.
I have worked at a food pantry and have given out chocolate milk, convenience foods galore, sugary cerals, snack items...and when we try to put the staples also in the bag (rice, fresh veggies, etc...) I have gotten,"I have 6 bags of rice at home.My kids donot eat that boring cereal. Give me some pre-packaged dinner stuff and toss in some more junk food, instad, please!"
And although I do serve, I weep for the greediness of an American humanity that believes going hungry means being out of Fruit Loops and Little Debbies.

Vegetable gee, I don't suppose these studies could be funded by the chemical fertilizer/insecticide companies, could they? It wouldn't a similar situation to the cigarette companies doing their own "research" that suprise! found that smoking was perfectly harmless, would it?

I don't know how anybody can trust the industry that stuffs the pesticides, hormones and antibiotics into our food supply and claims that it's perfectly safe and only coincidentally massively increases their profits.

Sorry, I'll spend the extra dough, particularly on my kids. If in 50 years you'll all fine and I'm only 10,000s poorer the laugh's on me.

I am sure none of us are, perhaps, disabled. Maybe one of us on foodstamps has asthma that is so disabling that she goes to the ER four or five times a year. And perhaps she also has MS and can't work even if she wants to. Damn I sure do live high on the hog with my 67 dollars a month in food stamps and my 565 in social security. I bought a bag of chips last night. SO sue me.

I know. For a long time my favorite time each month was when I got commodities. A pound of butter and week old bread to put it on. If I wan't a damn cookie I dare y'all to take it away from me. Food stamps are by law considered to be supplemental to your food budget. If thats the case then denying someone sugar and pop, would only be denying them based on the percentage food stamps are supposed to be.

I think the point is that food stamps are there to keep you from starving. If you want totally non-essential stuff like candy, soda etc. you'll need to find another way to pay for it.

2004-03-13 10:16:13 AM
It is not "pleasure" they seek, instead, they feel it is their "right" to receive hanouts.
As for the kids, I also used to work for DFACs (Dept Family and Children) Food stamps unit. More than once, we had a parent, able bodied, but not working (this was in the early 90's) who asked us,"how am I supposed to feed my family on just $112 a month in food stamps?"
And we would (patiently) explain that that was for the CHILD---NOT the adults, not the entire family.
We also had FREE clothes if they wanted to look nice for job interviews. Had to show proof of job hunting, though.
Was a great place to rest in that clothing closet--so little takers!
Many want something for nothing.
I also helped a 21 yr old mom pregnant with her FOURTH and took her yardsaling, with her kids. She REFUSED most of the items. I was also pregnant with my 3rd, and mostly even now supply my family with secondhand items, and I just cringed at what she passed up.
She received free carseats and formula and medical care, free ambulance rides whenever she "felt" bad (something about fee medical care transportation, being sued if the city does not provide ambulance as a taxi) and all the while, her mom AND grandmom, and BROTHER, and HIS pregnant fiance, and whoever else pooped in and out of their house, were not working and ALL on assistance of very kind.
FOUR GENERATIONS on welfare. This family has grown up knowing nothing else but how to use and work the system. Oh--they ALL had cell phones, and nice hair-dos. Bigger TV than mine. And a car per person.
AND a basket of Happy Meal toys---thus summing up my discourse---McD should be an occaisional treat for it is expensive (if you have no income) and is unhealthy. Yet the "entitlement minded" crowd has no desire to postpone immediate gratification and therefore wallows in the moment, never realizing their potential. And the cycle continues for the next generation.
/rant over for now...

Word of advice, drop the web site, drop the internet connections, and you can get more bags of chips for the money you save. After all, it is your money.

Speaking as a person who remembers being a child (so many seem not to) I remember being jealous of my friends who ate cold cereal for breakfast. My parents fed me eggs, toast, hash browns, grits (laugh but my parents were from the south and it's good eating) biscuits. Yet I felt deprived because I didn't get Sugar Frosted Flakes or some other sugary breakfast.

As a parent, it's hard to get children to eat food that is considered "strange" to them that is healthy. They want burgers, pizza and such food every night because that's what they see on TV. And I had one child who was very stubborn and only ate when he felt like it. Skinny then and still skinny at 28. I was afraid someone was going to accuse me of not feeding him.
