Aviation experts put it there apparently in the belief its "pristine condition" ruled out the possibility that it came from the downed Falcon 50 jet

Yes, even if it didn't come from the Falcon 50 jet, it must have come from somewhere.

Cliche, but....

Price of downed plane: $1.2 Million
Cost of funerals for heads of state: $350K
Forgetting that you had black box data that could have prevented the deaths of 500,000 people: priceless

2004-03-12 10:18:44 AM
Maybe this is just crazy talk- but rather than apologizing for misplacing the black box- how about apologizing for letting all the Tutsi people gather at the U.N. compounds- thinking that they would be protected by U.N. troops- and then abandoning them there- pulling out the troops knowing that they would all be killed.

You wonder - how did they kill thousands using machetes? Well- we helped by gathering up all the victims into groups for easy slaughtering. Clinton already went an apologized for the U.S.- but who ought to be over there groveling are the freaking European leaders who pulled out there troops. They are directly responsible for the extent of the killing that went on.

The UN: anybody who puts Libya(or any muslim nation) in charge of the human rights (council?/thingee) is a friggin' joke.

2004-03-12 10:18:54 AM
Why would anyone assume this was an unintentional error? It's very hard to believe that the UN has so many flight data recorders laying around that they could just ignore this one.

2004-03-12 10:18:54 AM
Do you really think a black box would have kept these savages from killing each other? If not this, they would have found some other reason.....they murder each other....en masse, its what they DO. Well, that and have lots of unprotected sex (with monkeys?) and spread AIDS.....then tell the world its not their fault and they need free help.

Dear Rwanda,

Why is it you always run across black boxes when you're not looking, but when you really need one you can't find it. Ha! LOL...anyway, sorry for the genocide. Let me know if you need anything.

Cheers,

I'm a bit against the UN because all they do now is pass resolutions. No one really takes them seriously. They've got no bite. Pass enough resolutions, and eventually, you become useless. For example, if your mother tells you that you can't have a cookie, but you do anyway, and your mother never does anything to punish you, your mother becomes nothing but a useless figure head.

Furthermore, the U.S. pays over a third of the UN's tab, but we never get any support from them. It's a crock.

From a press release in 1997 about the Ron Brown case......
It's a conspiracy, I tells ya!!!

" Pathologists, Air Force Lt. Col. Steve Cogswell and Army Lt. Col. David Hause, have criticized AFIP for not conducting and autopsy on Brown's body upon its return to the United States from the site of a military jet crash in Croatia in April 1996. Both men allege that AFIP did not properly investigate a suspicious head wound that both agree may have been caused by a gunshot. The Two forensic pathologists also claim that x-rays of Brown's head have mysteriously disappeared from the case file."

Oh, and we did have the authority(granted by the UN, mind you) to invade Iraq. OH GNOZS.

Many people have trouble with the UN because the organization's members act as if they are really active in improving the world, but actually just seem to pass resolution after resolution with little action. They act as "peacekeepers," going in to clean up after wars, when earlier action could have prevented the war in the first place.

The structure of the UN ensures that to get anything done one must form organizations outside of the UN. NATO/Warsaw Pact is the finest example. Because of the veto powers of the big 5 (two of which can hardly be considered world powers) the UN gets split into power blocs which results in an inability to accomplish its goals. It also give smaller nations a chance to blame the USA for all of their problems (the conference in Durban in which the US was encouraged to pay reparations for the COLONIZATION OF AFRICA! was a perfect example). The UN seems to be a forum for blaming other nations for your problems instead of actually attempting to fix them.

While there have been successes (some peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, health care, etc) there have been far more failures (most peacekeeping, all political resolutions, racism conferences, etc.).

I was in Kingali, Rwanda right before the genocide. I left two months before the event. It was going to happen with or without the plane crash. Germany, France, belgium, et al. had fukced with Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC so dramatically for so long that there was no chance for a real peace. This will be interesting but will solve nothing. At the time it would have solved nothing.

"Anti-UN people: Exactly what is your problem with the organization? Just curious. Maybe I don't know enough about them"

How about letting special interest groups make and enforce policy that has nothing to do with world peace, but rather economic benefit for their respective nation.

The UN is made up of mostly non-democratic dictatorships. does anybody really think they're going to do whats best?

people have this notion of some star trek federation embodied in the UN. But all it is one big fuster cluck.

There was a good link posted in the comments thread a couple of weeks ago giving an almost logical opinion why Africans kill each other in a nonchalant way. I wish I still had it because I would post it now, but to paraphrase, it claimed that Africans do not value human life nearly to the extent that we do in the Western world in part because of how easy it is to die in Africa by natural causes. You know, lions, illness, and shiat. I guess this desensitizes the population to death.

/oh yeah, the UN can chew through my ball sack

UN only exists to prevent action from taking place. They accomplish very little. Africa, the parts were the genocide was taking place, is just a collection of tribal groups barely civilized beyond cave dwelling. Trying to blame all the killing on the UN is more than silly. Might as well blame the machete makers. The dirt bags swinging the knives are the bad guys.

Blaming this on inaction of the UN is a little silly. The whole charter of the UN is about its inaction.

The black box shouldnt' have been sent there anyway.

Kofi was embarrased and spat upon by Saddam, but did they do anything... NO... cowards...

Pass enough resolutions, and eventually, you become useless.

Reminds me of a scene out of Life of Brian. Remember how the People's Front of Judea reacted to Brian's crucifiction?

Or was it the Judean People's Front?
