If power companies pulled this shiat (like what happened in California a couple years ago) the government would be stepping up. This kind of crap doesn't happen with other consumer services (like phones) because there is sufficient competition. I smell horse crap. Texan horse crap.

As a dish customer I have a few comments to add to this forum. Frist of all it sucks dish didn't warn us about this, I mean an e-mail or snail-mail letter would of been nice. Secondly I think the dollar a month is too low, maybe some free pay per view passes would be much nicer imo. As to directv vs. Dish each both have their advanatages and disadvantages and both have raised their rates in the past few years. As to pictue quality I must say I always heard dish is better and i know in my area it seems better but that can be subjective.

I must say Viacom is really fighting back now on their website so this should get interesting. But if this gets us closer to having the choice of what we want I'm on Dishes side. Heck give me 2 Hbo's and about 12 of the regular cable channels and I'd be happy.

Why is TV Land still running, since it is also a Viacom channel?
Also on the Viacom owned list:
Spike
Showtime
Flix
Sundance
CMT

These aren't being mentioned though, in any of the articles I've read about the shutdown.

Dish's PVR is based on Replay, and DirecTV's is based on TiVo.

Having owned and used both, I far prefer TiVo. The only downside I've found is that you can only keep live TV paused up to 30 minutes, whereas Replay would keep it paused up to the amount of disk space you had left. Otherwise, the recording system in TiVo is much more friendly. Programs are ranked in importance to deal with conflicts, rather than the lame Replay "yes/no" system. You can record a showing as often as it appears, no matter what day or time it appears. And yes, with about 10 seconds of Googling, you can get your 30-second skip enabled.

As for the re-encoding question, DirecTiVo does not have an MPEG encoder in it (there are no inputs, except for satellite inputs, and no standard TV channel tuner). The raw signal is placed onto the disk, just like in the case with the DishPlayer (which means you get things like secondary audio and Dolby Digital 5.1 even on your time shifted programming).

What DISH did to it's customers SUCKS! We all pay a bunch for what was sold to us as a selection of channels with the expectation of those continuing or if not, then a reasonable notice (60-90 days) so we could chose to make changes. I cancelled all of my premium channels today costing DISH $35 per month as a protest of their action. If they don't resume the regular Viacom channels real soon, then I'm jumping ship back to cable or Direct TV. (BTW, did anyone else notice that DISH ran all those "piggish" ads about cable raising their rates and then DISH raised their rates last month AND Charlie Ergen was recently reported to be Colorado's richest person with a net worth of about $18 BILLION!) Who's piggish???

You know the problem is forced bundling as well as the prices.

Viacom: You want MTV? Then you have to also take "Crappychannel_01" for a premium price."

Most companies: OK /sigh lets raise rates.
Dish: Up yours.

Up top now, millions of us pay extra each month for BS channels that frankly could little survive on their own. I want to choose. I would take MTV... maybe. Comedy C definately, and Spike as well. Nick? BET? They may be fine channels, but I don't watch them... why should I pay for them?

Entertainment is becoming a tradeable commodity. The model is changing. The warm-up/exhibition rounds were CNN, HBO et all... later Fox UPN and the mini networks got the crowd excited. This is the first punch in the main event. Go Dish!

Dish is piggish and I hope Viacom & customers make bacon out of them! We are talking 6 cents, keep the damn dollar credit and we should be covered.

"Dish's PVR is based on Replay, and DirecTV's is based on TiVo."

DirecTV's IS a TiVo, essentially -- but nothing could be further from the truth about Dish's PVR. It's their own thing, and it's really nothing more than a digital VCR. None of the intelligence or flexibility of a ReplayTV. I have a ReplayTV, and I've seen what DISH's PVR is capable of. Despite the attraction of recording the compressed stream directly, there's no way you'd get me to switch.

The channels are back on now, Dish won. In addition to the one dollar credit they are also going to send a coupon to everyone for a free pay-per-view movie.

Viacom=owned :D
