2001-12-18 05:39:48 PM
methinks Drew might make himself scarce for a day or two after this....
2001-12-18 05:39:58 PM
lol. if you don't know what a mud is you aren't enough of a dork to like one. I suggest you don't find out either, because muds just make you spend less (no) time talking to real people than you already waste on fark.
2001-12-18 05:40:46 PM
Just think of it as EverQuest without the crappy graphics!
2001-12-18 05:42:16 PM
That is if they are cool and you are a dork. most of them just suck ass.

anyone remember usurper from the bbs days? now THAT was a mud. w00t
2001-12-18 05:42:21 PM
A MUD is a Multi User Dimension, or something.. it's like an online text RPG.. my son use to play them, he got me to play one with him years ago.. it was terribly boring.. it's like a book you interact with, except the story is awful and moves very slowly
2001-12-18 05:42:34 PM
Who'll be the Weeners the fat woman diving into the mud?
2001-12-18 05:42:44 PM
OH! okay. I had just never heard of the term mud. Everquest is fun. What's wrong with being a dork...::weird look::. =)

Anyways....does that mean without ANY graphics? Damn...that would be like a kid's book without pictures....
2001-12-18 05:43:02 PM
God... back in the day someone tried to get me to play mud. I'd describe as a D&D sort of thing that does all of the rolling dice crap in the background.

Some of the stuff (in small doses) can be fun I think in a geeky, nerdy, sort of way. :-)
2001-12-18 05:43:34 PM

2001-12-18 05:43:35 PM
ick...text rpg......blegh.
2001-12-18 05:44:33 PM
Is there a way to like all the "nerdy" things and not be a nerd??

I didn't think so....

I'm doomed. =)<---I meant to smile. =)

Those rich farks! This whole farking thing... I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this farking strumpet--

2 people online?
That's pretty sad.

I used to mud on Three Kingdoms (a mud on which, might I add, Drew was the wizard Cletus :) Heya drew! OOC, how was it that a "Cletus" become a part of the anatomy on 3k? ;) ). It usually averaged about 150-200 players on at once.

That's how I found 'Fark' was a term Cletus used a lot, and, somehow, I stumbled into the site. Back then, it was just that picture of a squirrel on it . It eventually became a minimal news site, and I started using it for news for my radio show.

Ah... memories. Oh well, what was I talking about then?
2001-12-18 06:07:42 PM
A MUD is a Multi-User Dungeon (or Multi-User Dimension), typically (but not always) fantasy oriented and usually based on older Dungeons and Dragons type rules. They are text based games typically accessed via telnet, and are pretty similar to Everquest except for the lack of graphics. There are about 5000 or so in operation at any one time. Some of the largest are Medievia (fantasy) and Tdome (cyberpunk). I also have one called Iconoclast at - it's cyberpunk/gothic horror and is heavily role-playing based. Definitely not for everyone, but if you're a fan of paper based role-playing games then you might get a kick out of some of these.
2001-12-18 06:13:54 PM
Rei Laf- I used to date a wizard on 3K! All he ever did all day long was code new stuff for the mud.

My disparaging nickname for him was "mudder", used generally when I was in a heightened state of anger for his complete devotion to the mud. As well as his complete disinterest in anything sexual.

Coincidentally, 3K is what brought me to fark. Now I am forever changed by it.....
2001-12-18 06:19:30 PM
I've been playing Iconoclast since March or so and I must say that I've really enjoyed it. It has a good community feel to it and it's a lot less dorky than you guys seem to think. If you enjoy using your imagination, I suggest checking it out. It isn't a go, kill, kill, take gold, level up MUD.

I MUD, therefore Icon.

Just like when I started computing, 20 years ago.

flashes back to a simpler time
2001-12-18 06:25:52 PM
MUD -> Noun, "Multi-User Dungeon" An archaic, text-based predecessor to MMORPGs that, even in its hey day, sucked big open donkey ass.
2001-12-18 06:30:26 PM
Aeonite: "They are text based games typically accessed via telnet, and are pretty similar to Everquest except for the lack of graphics."

Heh. That's a pretty big difference! :)

Not sure what MMORPGs are, but I did dig TinyTim MUSH (that's Multi-User Shared Hallucination, I think) before it became dominated by Bostonian clique maestros.
2001-12-18 06:36:37 PM
MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
2001-12-18 06:47:40 PM
I remember something called "mud". I think I used to play in it as a child, when I would actually go . . outside and physically play. I was a wild child.
2001-12-18 06:48:03 PM
Radio is like television without pictures.
Books are like radio without sound.

Same thing. And lots of people enjoy books and radio.

It's a real shame that people are so afraid of reading and thinking nowadays. Everyone just wants to be force fed their blinking flashing exploding graphics-heavy games because it's too much effort to sit down and read for a few hours.

How many people will see Lord of the Rings without ever having read the book? Too many. Pity.
2001-12-18 06:51:08 PM
The original The Forest's Edge was the best MUD ever...
2001-12-18 06:56:26 PM
Yeah, MUDs were neat back in the day, neat in theory anyway. There's a potential for almost literary fun somewhere in the mire of poor grammar and power gamers. Now it seems like they're all overcrowded and identical... not unlike California's cities...
2001-12-18 06:57:36 PM
Heyo... yeah i submitted this link... i play here... it really is a good mud, but, as you can see... there is NO playerbase and its slowing dying. Was hoping Fark could pump some juice into it... give it a try if you're ever looking for a good mud with a lot... a shiatLOAD of original coding...

I apologize to those who are not dorky enough to comprehend all that is MUD
2001-12-18 07:01:14 PM
hehe... sure did fark the server... i can't even connect now
2001-12-18 07:56:13 PM
I apologize to those who are not dorky enough to comprehend all that is MUD

Yeah. User load is..what...two on your mud?

That's a lot of apologizing. Guess even those who comprehended all that mud is finally wised up some time ago.
2001-12-18 07:57:48 PM
Aeonite: Well-said.
Being a MUDer from the BBS days (now that's ancient history) I can say there is a literary enjoyment that can be achieved through text-based roleplay.

For someone with a quick mind and a good imagination I would recommend trying at least one MUD. Also a good way to improve your typing skills.
2001-12-18 08:19:14 PM
I have recently been drawn into a Wheel of Time MUD. Save me.
2001-12-18 09:12:20 PM
I gave EbonMists a try. I should go back when there are less people on. Like less than 5. It really is horridly lagged. Maybe in a day or two when the other Farkers clear out. Other than that it seemed mildly interesting, pretty complicated. Maybe if the map I started with in my inventory wasn't blank I could get a better idea where to go. How much of it is hack & slash vs. story/RP oriented? Can't say when everyone is new like me.
2001-12-18 09:22:12 PM

Rei Laf- I used to date a wizard on 3K! All he ever did all day long was code new stuff for the mud.

Oh really? Which one? :) I knew a few wizards in person.
2001-12-18 09:24:44 PM
next time, only good farks should be allowed, like smart forum using people. here's a quick list of people who are good enough in no particular order...

1. ME. (heh obviously id put myself...)
5.anyone with a number below 5000
2001-12-18 09:46:41 PM
I'm a wiz on NannyMUD. That thing has been going since March or 1990!!! Strangely enough, I haven't logged on in QUITE a while yet still can recall the webpage URL ( THAT'S disturbing.
2001-12-18 09:58:56 PM
OOOOOOH, text based role playing game, I hear the military is using mud for training their soldiers now. All the typing helps for when they have to quickly type a target into one of the smart bombs. HAHA. No seriously though, do anyone think my 1.4GHz with 256 PC800, can run it?
2001-12-18 10:00:09 PM
Molly from Texas sucks.
2001-12-18 10:27:36 PM
this != good mud. :)

I'm a builder/imm on feudal realms... 4444.

Better than crack...

(and the reason I stopped photoshopping. THESE THINGS ARE TOO farkING ADDICTIVE!)
2001-12-18 11:19:46 PM
This mud is coded really well. I suggest anyone who has
mudded before or even newbies to mudding try it out. I am
online quite a bit, dont be afraid to ask for help.
