"End the suffraging of women everywhere!"

Oh well, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Wasn't sacked in a day, either.

Progress is um.. progress.

I had the same thought.

I suppose it's a start....

Women didn't have the right to vote in the US for what....150 years after the signing of the Declaration? This isn't all that surprising.

2004-03-08 06:00:53 PM
Some benefits have also trickled down to women in more traditional roles. Hamida Shaheed, a middle-aged housewife, notes that she can travel to the market without fear of being beaten.

Yay. Progress.

Political Correctness = Comedy Gold.

As if Afghanistan were the only country having equal rights issues.

"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and I think we ought to codify that one way or another," Bush told reporters at a White House news conference.

Interfaith marriage used to be against the status quo too.
Interracial marriage used to be against the status quo too.
Marriage between blacks used to be against the status quo too.

Times change.

2004-03-08 06:03:29 PM
Was the headline writer saying it's obvious that women should be told how to vote, or is it obvious that women would be told how to vote in Afghanistan? Hmmm...

2004-03-08 06:04:45 PM
Okay, from now on you can THINK about a career while you fixes me dinner.

2004-03-08 06:05:33 PM
No, the headline writer was actually directly quoting the leader we installed in Afghanistan. RTFA

2004-03-08 06:06:54 PM
What I wanna know is this:

If two guys get married in Afghanistan, which one gets beaten on their way to the market? This needs to be codified.

2004-03-08 06:06:59 PM
Nice job USA, spreading freedom everywhere!

Men control the outcomes of votes.

Women control the world's supply of boobies.

Lysistrata trumps Karzai.

2004-03-08 06:07:26 PM
I think it was brilliant actaully. misognynist men let their women register and vote.

Husband : wife! you go vote for my favorite Islamic Fundamentalist misogynist lunatic

Wife: yes dear (secretly votes however she wants anyways)

2004-03-08 06:07:33 PM
Great quote:

Now that is a bad idea," said Simi Nakbari, a teacher and mother whose husband reluctantly allowed her to attend the meeting.

"It doesn't seem like a very good interpretation of the rights we are working for. We can select which minister or warlord to vote for as well as anyone."

This is why secret ballots are vital to democracy.

2004-03-08 06:08:47 PM
Any religion or culture that consistently craps on its female adherents won't garner any sympathy from me when it's eventually consigned to the dustbin of history.

2004-03-08 06:09:52 PM
Is it Uppity Woman Day again already?

2004-03-08 06:12:16 PM
well, any democracy that doesn't have vote confidentiality is a complete farce and just waiting to become a despotic tyranny (just like Saddam's Iraq)

2004-03-08 06:12:25 PM
Beforte the Taliban, Kabul was a relatively cosmopolitan city where you could buy rock music tapes and women were seen wearing pants (like Iran before the revolution). But I imagine that in very rural areas, the Taliban changed very little. Hicks are hicks, regardless of skin colour or religion, and there are hicks on this continent who want to keep women in the kitchen too (see "Promise Keepers" et al.)

2004-03-08 06:12:40 PM
Karzai added. "Of course our central government controls less than 5% of the country anyway, so how much trouble could we cause? So let this be our rallying cry: Let your woman vote, and you might not have to bang the goat!"

I hope their voting is anonymous. Then women can say, "yes, dear, I voted for the guy you told me to vote for", and still vote for whomever they choose. Heck, people do that all the time (even in our 'liberated' America, some men still believe their women should do whatever they say). My parents did. Women get freedom by patience, subtle rebellion. It'll be slow, but hopefully it will work there. It took a while for the USA to give women the vote (there was a long suffragist movement). Men still try to tell women how to vote (though many don't listen anymore). Politics are still a predominantly male area. Yes, there are females in office, but it'll be a while before we get a female president.

/not a feminist, really

I say it's high time we start imposing western culture on every country that hasn't conformed yet.

2004-03-08 06:14:43 PM
It would be nice if it were secret ballot. Women could say, "Yes, whatever asshat and vote the way they wanted.

Of course, if the other person won, they would be beaten because of suspicion.

I AM SO GLAD I LIVE HERE I AM SO GLAD I LIVE HERE I AM SO GLAD I LIVE HERE I AM SO GLAD I LIVE HERE I AM SO GLAD I LIVE HERE...

Interfaith marriage used to be against the status quo too.

I'm reminded of Woody from Cheers: "We can't get married! I'm Lutheran and she's 7th Day Adventist, our children would be half-breeds!"

That's friggin hilarious

Countertop
"I'm so glad things are so much better now after the american occupation."

Sadly enough Countertop things are MUCH MUCH better now than when they were under Taliban rule. People can play soccer in shorts, girls can go to school and learn how to read. women do not have to have a man accompany them when they are outside of the house. People are allowed to dance. Music is allowed. Photographs and Videos are once again viewable.Towns have schools, water, electricity , medicine, food etc etc etc etc. You can's America bash the Afghan war they pretty much won it themselves and were dancing in the streets when they won. Nice try though I give you a D+

Giving women the vote was one of the worst mistakes we ever made.

The Democratic Party still hasn't recovered from that error.

Luckily enough the Republican Party is still somewhat sane.

2004-03-08 06:19:52 PM
They are idiots if they allow women to vote. Women are dependent by nature and will vote for the surrogate-provider/husband/father nearly every time and any society that allows women to vote will eventually become communist.

In a society where the men frequently kill each other, women will exist in greater numbers and communism via democracy will happen that much quicker.

2004-03-08 06:21:23 PM
Naw.. how it really works is anyone can vote but we are gonna lose the ballots of those who disagree with us. The true pinnacle of the democratic voting process. Hey it works that way in the US.

2004-03-08 06:21:36 PM
Well, the fall of communism showed us one thing: there's no such thing as just a little freedom.

Eventually, the people always take the freedom they want. This is just the first step.

Unfortunately, the rise of corporations and radical religious groups in positions of power showed us one thing: you can always brainfark people hard enough to make them want what you think they should want.

Eventually, the people always take the freedom they're told they should want. This is just their first step.

"The mullahs in the villages and provinces need to explain to the people that it [oppression of females]
is not right, and it is against our religion,"

...until the rest of the world stops watching, anyway.

The woman who cant influence her husband to vote the way she wants ought to be ashamed of herself.

- Mrs. Plynlimmon, in Howards End, ch. 26 (E.M. Forster)

2004-03-08 06:23:51 PM
The word "feminazi" makes me want to do a lot of damage.

Anyhow, the "tell your wife who to vote for" thing could work... if women actually wanted to rebel against their husbands. I get the impression that that may not be the case in some areas of Afghanistan.

What can Karzai do otherwise in this case? Well, he could certainly be promoting women's rights a lot more... but that would likely get him attacked by angry mobs of fundamentalists wherever he goes. F'n fundamentalists.

I wonder how many women were killed when the Americans firebombed Dresden slaughtering innocents?

How about this: Paying taxes = suffrage. If you don't play taxes, are a slug on society, you perpetuate the welfare state and are not a stakeholder.

What if we bring ALL of their women over here? Then will they learn? That sounds like a much better idea than "imposing western culture," because they just resist. How will they resist if we take all their boobies away??

I guess if you are for any consenting adults to be married, you are in favor of bigamy and polygamy???
Or is bigamy and polygamy sick???
