That's certainly better than teaching them how it happens, right?

Kyosuke
It's the parents' job to teach that stuff and it should be the parents' job to take care of their brat's brats. What they should do is license being a parent- otherwise it's a mandatory abortion and they send you the bill.

the mom should get a week's detention for naming her kid this.

In a way, I agree with you SockMonkeyHolocaust. My sister had 5 kids with 5 different fathers, one of which is in prison (level 5 I believe, he isn't getting out anytime soon). My parents did nothing but encourage her and at the same time put me down for not being as good as she is. They still baby the shiat out of her, dropping everything to take care of her every desire. I've had three kids with the same woman. We've been together 14 years but didn't get married until we'd been together 5. My parents have actually made comments about that fact, even though I'm nowhere near my sister in what I've done.

One of my sister's kids was given up for adoption. That kid is living a great life. The other 4 are just used to push my parents around.

I think this is a cool program. Having the mothers continue with their education to help them become more employable is far preferable to letting them become permanent welfare moms.

Why the hell is this amusing? If teen mothers don't get access to daycare so they can finish high school, they can kiss their futures goodbye. It's a much-needed social program to help people grow up to be able to take care of themselves, even though they screwed up.

2004-03-08 10:33:57 AM
If these girls are having children at this young age, then they should be made to financially reimburse the state for these expenses. Getting pregnant and having children is a concious decision they made. This choice has financial responsibility with it. You want to be a 'grown up' with kids? Fine. Grown ups make sacrifices and pay for their children. Aren't ready for that yet (perfectly understandable) then don't get pregnant and have children when you're a farking teenager. Pregnancies just don't 'happen'. If you're having sexual intercourse without a condom OR using birth control, then you've made the decision to get pregnant and raise a child. Deal with that reality.

The high school I attended did one better, they hosted the daycare free, then assigned the teens to mandatory parenting classes and offered it as a HomeEc optional, voila instant parent skill training.

The other fun part of attending that high school was the developmentally disabled and emotionally disabled (read kids who try to kill other kids) wing with the Art section way at the end of it.

Nothing like watching the sheep head through the jungle on the way to class.

2004-03-08 10:35:13 AM
I give this "SAD," not "AMUSING." People should be licensed to have kids. There are too many rug-rats wandering around anyways.

2004-03-08 10:35:31 AM
Of course it is amusing, you now know which girls will give it up.

Let 'em screw and pump out the future losers of America ... I mean, someone has to pump our gas and mow our lawns.

2004-03-08 10:38:31 AM
Good. Maybe these girls who made the mistake of having kids will actually be able to finish their educations and get a job, rather than becoming yet another in a sea of unwed high-school dropout welfare mothers.

2004-03-08 10:38:33 AM
Well, I'm very glad they got something to A) keep them in school and B) teach them parenting skills.
What they need to add is C) how to use freakin' birth control.

2004-03-08 10:38:36 AM
I applaud their facilities as both a teen and a parent of a teen.

WTF? It's a good thing that they don't have access to the devil's condoms.

/sarcasm attached.

2004-03-08 10:38:46 AM
I wonder how many farkers will never be able to procreate? Most of them, I fear, what with the smell and the lard.

You guys are idiots. This is an awesome program for kids who've made a bad choice.

It's not like most kids in high school CHOOSE to be parents...this program really isn't for them. It's for those who've had the misfortune of getting pregnant.

It's like the old condom debate...having condoms doesn't cause kids to have sex...they're going to do it anyway. Having this program doesn't mean that tons of teenagers are going to get pregnant...it just means that for those who do, they'll have somewhere to take their children.

2004-03-08 10:39:01 AM
Throwing more money at something like this is throwing more money into a rathole. It rewards irresponsible behavior and shields people from the consequences of making poor choices. I can guarantee most of these kids will end up making the same dumb choices over and over again throughout their lives. And besides, the world needs ditch diggers, fry cooks, and grocery store clerks.

Whatever behavior you reward, be prepared to get more of said behavior.

2004-03-08 10:40:49 AM
Well, at least the kids in the daycare have a lot to look forward to when their mothers "graduate" and go on welfare ...

2004-03-08 10:41:20 AM
What they need to add is C) how to use freakin' birth control.

Getting rid of abstinence-only "education" would do our country a world of good. Unfortunately, some book apparently frowns on it, or something.

2004-03-08 10:42:01 AM
this is the sorta thing that makes me believe we ought to "erase" the bad parts of certain cities and start them over.

why cant black parents name their kids something decent?
my mother is black and named me derrick, my lil brother is joseph. we dont have any weird Ja/De/La/Sha names in my entire family.. man i hate when (can i say "my people" without getting flamed?) do completely stupid things.
the worst is when they try to pass of these names as African.. omg they are so far off.

My High School had this, I don't really see what's so amusing about this.... I mean making it so that young moms can still continue their education is admirable, not laughable. I always thought it was a good idea, especially with the alternative.

2004-03-08 10:42:41 AM
Is it just me or do people treat pregnancy as wonderful 'mircale' of life that women have no control over but are heros for participating in.

Like that story with the basketball chick having a baby and hiding it being made out to be a hero, and now, programs like this.

First, people just don't get pregnant. It's not random, it's a choice. So, some girl wants to get pregnant, but she's in high school. Girl wants to finish high school. So, now instead of her having to choose, she is 'rewarded' by having other people (IE Me, you and everyone else paying taxes) pay for the cost of *her* child so that she can have her cake and eat it too.

In high school I wanted a new sports car. I couldn't afford a new sports car unless I put in so many hours at work that I couldn't possibly attend school. How come nobody helped me out?

"Kids" like these really screw things up for everyone, since many people in any position of authority think the solution to any problem is to remove the choice to make bad decisions from everyone, or treat everyone as though they will make bad decisions. The solution IMO, as some posters already agree, is to take choices away from the people who make bad decisions and leave everyone else the hell alone. The vast majority of these kids were not perfect little angels and then just got pregnant(boys too). This may sound really mean I know, but when you have these little delinqunets who just can't stop screwing up and their parents are scum, you really need to put shock collars with cameras on them(kids and parents). 15 year old getting drunk while her baby is at home, shock. 15 year old dad trying to fight when he should be flipping burgers to pay for diapers, shock. Then shock the parents of those kids when they do those things and society will turn around pretty quick. See?

2004-03-08 10:43:04 AM
The children spend their days engaged in learning activities geared to hone their dexterity, teach them colors and letters and build independence

damn, high schools really are dumbing down their education

2004-03-08 10:44:48 AM
Are you for real? Jesus.

Choice #2: Don't use protection

You're missing the fact that teenagers don't always think things through and make great decisions. They don't always consider the consequences of their actions and think they're invincible. Although I'm SURE you were the exception to the rule and every single thing you did as a teen was rational and good.

It makes more sense to me to continue to educate these kids than to laugh in their faces and tell them to fark off for making a mistake.

Which is better for society...hmm...

2004-03-08 10:46:08 AM
The same people biatching about this would also complain if the girls dropped out and went on welfare because no one would hire them. It's a lose lose situation.

2004-03-08 10:46:09 AM
Problems with teen pregnancy? Yeah, let's address the issue by implementing costly social programs that facilitate and legitimize this behavior, and thus penalize citizens who actually contribute to society.

Get pregnant while still in high school, and there WILL BE major, permanent, life-altering consequences. Don't expect the government to come pick up the pieces after you fark up your life.

2004-03-08 10:46:10 AM
Carver?

Well, it sure has come a long way since the days of Coolidge, Hayward and Thorpe.

2004-03-08 10:46:28 AM
We should go back to the day when teen pregnancy was looked down upon. As it is now, babies are trophies. This behaviour should be discouraged, not rewarded.

2004-03-08 10:47:37 AM
bob justice "It's not like most kids in high school CHOOSE to be parents...this program really isn't for them. It's for those who've had the misfortune of getting pregnant."

you MUST be trolling. What - did these poor, downtrodden girls accidently slip and fall into a puddle of sperm? Complete bullshirt. HeatMiser nailed it perfectly - that IS the equasion here: sex + no condom = pregnant. If their brains cannot grasp this reality, then they'll be little use to a productive society. Years ago I might've accepted your plea of ignorance. But today amidst all the sexual & disease realities I find it completely impossible that getting preggers is 'an accident of misfortune.'

Is it fair to put the 'burden' of pregnancies the woman (girls) responsibility? No. But that's the biological reality of life - unbalanced that it may be.

2004-03-08 10:47:47 AM
MyrnaMinkoff - I agree that it's better for people to learn to make better choices in life; but I think that these programs go so far as to make the choices of that person seem like good choices. Instead of learning they will take advantage of the system and just keep looking for more handouts.

Oh well; then again I could be completely wrong :)

"New Orleans inner city high school being praised for it's day care program for students' children"

"inner city high school" and "student's children"...sadly, not surprised by these being in the same sentence. If school boards ran things in the city like rural school boards ran things, there would be a lot less problems.

Obviously a lack of good parenting schools are largely to blame as well.

Ouroborus ,
Seriously. And that's probably how the parent/student/people spend their days.

Giving, and teaching them how to use, birth control might help to improve dexterity and build independence as well. They can even mix it up with different colored jammy hats to complete the educational experience.

2004-03-08 10:54:25 AM
Robdude-

I think that if you think these girls are consciously choosing to get pregnant because they want to have babies...then yeah, you are completely wrong. =)

99.999% of high school pregnancies are unplanned. I personally think it's better to give these girls an opportunity to finish their high school education than to give them the proverbial finger. But that's just me.

2004-03-08 10:55:05 AM
I hear in Delaware, the sate pays for prosthetic limbs if you happen to lose your own. I'm getting me a hacksaw and movin' to Delaware. Taking advantage of that program!

Well, many of you seem to be implying the same thing when it comes to these women and their kids. The fact of the matter is, however sad it is that these pregnancies occured, or how unprepared the mothers may be, what's done is done. Giving these mothers a shot at making something of themselves and their children is admirable. Not to mention, as someone posted earlier, the alternative is for most of these moms to be living off welfare for the rest of their lives. So either way, the anti-social-program grinches in this thread are going to have something to biatch about.

2004-03-08 10:55:25 AM
amusing? I thought it was really sweet.

you guys sure have a high instance of teen pregnancy over there.

Myrna

Getting rid of abstinence-only "education" would do our country a world of good. Unfortunately, some book apparently frowns on it, or something.

Well said. This philosophy of "abstinence is all you need to know" is the problem (as is that book that promotes it). Educate kids properly and we'll have less need for programs like this.

2004-03-08 10:59:24 AM
MyrnaMinkoff-

+2 points for saying 'RobDude' :)

And yeah, I don't mean that girls literally sit down and say I want to have a baby. But, I also think that pretty much every girl knows where babies come from and what activities lead to getting pregnant.

I look at it the same as I look at drunk driving. People who drink and drive really don't want to crash and kill a family of 8, but it happens and we hold them responsible because they knew drinking and driving leads to crashing.

But, well, that's not exactly a fair analogy but just that general idea I guess.

2004-03-08 11:01:04 AM

The alternative is that they drop out, which is worse no matter how you look at it.

2004-03-08 11:02:15 AM
Also, I'd honestly like to see some stats showing what percentage of these mothers have a second child, or how long until that second child comes.

I don't think girls would ever intentionally get pregnant just to get the free day-care; but after having one and thinking 'Wow, this isn't so bad' - I wonder if that has any a(e?)ffect on the mothers.

2004-03-08 11:04:20 AM
What do you want? Its Louisiana.

I know Grandmas younger than me, and I'm 36.
