"..tells S4C's Cwmni Drwg" wow.

This, along with Christian Bale and Catherine Zeta-Jones, makes Wales cool enough to claim again.

Or in the words of Brotha Lynch Hung:

"Guess what daddy's bringin' home for supper..
nubian nuts and guts and slabs of human meat, motherfarker
Now eat! Cause daddy's workin' hard for you, rilla
Killas run around everyday that's why I'm hard for you, nubian!
Now eat!"

He may not have drank blood but he did used to sit in the middle of the villages his men were butchering and eat. He would often dip his bread into the blood of the victims and eat it. That is where Bram Stoker got many of his ideas about count Dracula.

/read a bio on Vlad the Impaler (aka Dracula)

Suspecting they may have been part of a plot against his
father, Vlad invited all of the families (including women
and children)of the local nobles to dinner. He then
locked all of the doors and executed one member of each
family to show them he was serious; then forced the people
to finish their dinners while sitting next to their
impaled and decapitated wive's sons and daughters.

He then marched the survivors of the dinner party to
the remains of his father's castle and turned the local
nobles into slaves; forcing them to finish construction of
the castle. After the castle was completed he impaled all
of the enslaved nobles in the courtyard.

...and this guy is worried about his ancestor's image
being besmirched?

"I can't help thinking that if Mathew Hardman had been on one of our tours over here that it would have helped him realise the difference between vampires in folklore and what happens in real life."

So, what do they do in real life? Mope around in black clothing listening to Marylin Manson and other shiatty pop-goth music?

well maybe if he hadn't taken the stake out of grandad's heart, then he wouldn't have gone on that rampage. Geez! If you're gonna keep a ravening undead monster in storage at least put a sign up warning people what you've got in the U Store-It bin!

Marylin Manson is NOT goth. And most goths find the morons who pretend to me vampires rather embarassing. And most goths don't larp.

The goth and vampire scenes are 2 seperate things. There are lots of things to mock goths about, but please get your facts straight.

Also, 99% of the people who aren't and haven't been goth aren't going to distinguish between a Mansonite and a goth anyway. Mopey black-clad people are going to be labeled "goth" regardless.

As a non-freaky goth, people who draw on their faces (like with a marker) piss me the hell off. Especially when they do it in a feeble attempt at being gothic.

No self respecting goth will EVER color on their face, because it's stupid, and you're stupid for doing it.

The impression I've gotten about Vlad is that he was obsessed with torturing and killing small animals as a child. He never grew out of it. He graduated to killing and torturing a neighboring ethnic group. It was OK with everyone for a while. Then when the repercussions outweighed the gains, his countrymen locked him up. He was left to impaling whatever wandered into his cell. Then when the ethnic group started making problems he was released and put in charge again. He had to of had a lot of help carrying out the things he is associated with.

I am The Vampire Lestat
You are here for the Grand Sabbat
But I pity your lot.

You can't resist the Lords of Night
They have no mercy on your plight
In your fear they take delight.

Yet in Love, we will take you,
And in Rapture, we'll break you
And in Death, we'll release you.

No one can say
You were not warned.

I would guess that he sat there grinning while his soldiers actually did the work. Not really much you can do about it.

Yeah, I also want to slap those morons. They look like freakin mimes! Also on my to slap list, people in crow makeup, people who think I want to hear their poetry and young wannabes who have never actually read a real gothic novel (No, interview with the vampire doesn't count).

Dracula's only living relative

I call shenanigans.

Any European who lived five or six hundred years ago either has no living descendants, or else everyone of European descent is his or her descendant.

To be goth means that your parents neglet you and you are force to do dumbsh^t for attention that will fill in the void absentee parents have created.

If parents just paid more attention to their kids' suffuring, there would be no need for goths. Being a parent means more than just fulfilling your kids' materialistic needs.

2004-03-07 09:42:48 PM

zoob: That's a hard question, ask 2 people and you'll get 2 different answers. But I'll give it a shot.

Goth is an offshoot of the punk scene. It was (and for the most part, still is) about the music. Bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy and so on.

Most goths are well read, bright, creative people. Dispite what most people say, most are not mopey and depressed all the time. Some are downright perky.

Goths tend to embrace a darker aesthetic, and a dark sense of humor. Most wear black, or dark colors, but not all.

Many are influenced by the preraphaelites, a group of artists from 1848. The preraphaelites rebelled against the opressive culture of the time. They were also called gothics, at the time gothic meant anything not classical. This is why the term was applied to the modern goths.

Well, that should get you started.

2004-03-07 09:54:43 PM
Abby, what do you mean by a "real gothic novel"? Gothic novels and the gothic subculture--to my knowledge--have little to do with each other. Goths may be more inclined than most to read them, but I've never seen that as a defining characteristic.

Though in an English lit class I was seen as the gothic novel expert and had to explain that a gothic novel has nothing to do with the Gothic culture. That was fun. Nowhere near as fun as when we read Dracula, though.

Most goths I know have read the classic gothic novels, Of course there is a connection, look at the way we dress!

Goths tend to like creepy stories, so of course we'd read this stuff.

Anyone want to take a poll of nearby Goths to see just how many of them can spell "PreRaphaelite," let alone define what it means? No, I didn't think so. Anyway, no one's fooled by that whole "rebellion against the norms of society" smokescreen. We all know Goths are nothing more than clincally depressed street mimes.

I've never seen them linked. Which is kind of odd. The goths I know or have just talked two tend to read classic and/or modern horror or philosophy and other more intellectual type things. But I do tend to talk more to younger goths (I'm 23) and the older ones I've met have more or less moved on. Or so they think ;)

1. Vlad Dracula was not a "Count", as the article calls him.

2. His bloodline supposedly died out 2 centuries ago.

3. Stories of him dipping his bread in the blood of his victims are generally regarded as folklore by most historians who actually studied his life.

European nobles keep pretty firm records of their ancestry, especially if it's a particularly famous line (like Vlad). And when you factor in all the in-breeding, a European 500 years ago could easily have few living descendents. Their bloodlines didn't tend to branch out too much.

I hereby declare Werewolves superior to Vampires. Mummies, Zombies, and man-made abominations are free to jump in and rant about their own virtues, if they desire.

Ex-humans only, please. The greatness of Dragons, Demons, and Old Gods is not up for debate.
