"I've been fired from the CBC because of the risk of my private sex life being made public as a result of a campaign of false allegations" pursued by someone with whom he had a relationship, he wrote.

Warning that it "may be shocking to some," Mr. Ghomeshi's statement details a sexual relationship with a woman that included "role play, dominance and submission" as well as "forms of BDSM."

The only thing that shocks me was that this was a woman.

A woman? You are correct subby. I am shocked.

/Have loved his interviewing style for years.

This would not be the first time that the conservative prudes at the CBC try to fire a presenter because of his or her sex life

Good. I wish nothing but bad things for this douchenozzle. He, personally,  is the reason that Moxy Früvous became persona non grata at the Iron Horse any longer. While I was chef there, I had to deal with these folks fair often, and they were nothing but a pain in the ass. Manager was a pain. Band was a pain. Jian was a pain. Their fans were a pain, and cheap to boot. Every time they took to the stage, we all groaned, because they were one of our least favorite acts in the world--at least when Cat Power got the boot, it was because she was pissed off at the turnout, and when she walked off stage it was with some verve, and while she never got another booking from us, we could at least understand her frustration--up there with The Bobs with true annoyance factor--forty five minute sound checks, done with the same repeated lyric of "Get on the Party Train" at differencing tones and levels, and thoroughly unpleasant people to deal with professionally.

The straw that broke the camel's back for us though, wasn't the manager trying to weasel out of merch sale percentages that we handled, or trying to get a per diem despite having meals provided by the in house chef--which was me and Willy Nelson called our service "some of the best road food in the business"--but when Jian tried to get two of my 16 year old runners--essentially bussers--onto the tour bus. Yes, they were indeed girls, and pretty ones at that, and the doorman had to hold me back when we caught the manager trying to sneak the girls onto the bus without anyone seeing them get on--all the while promising them that they'd have "a really good time." Jian had struck up more than a couple of conversations with these girls, and they were flattered all to heck by the attention. When confronted, the manager blurted out that Jian had asked him to get these high school girls onto the bus, and back to the hotel--because apparently that would make it OK.

We never booked them again. Not at any venue. Those two girls, we knew their parents. They were like family, and Jian pretty much preys on pretty, naive girls who want to be singers. He DID show up at the Horse a few times, with singer-songwriters that he was "helping" and it all had the same sleazy disgusting vibe, and it never kept him from hitting on every damn waitress or soundtech, and any time he did make it in with another act--never on the bill, and never on the stage, security was alerted that he would have zero contact with the runners. Our waitstaff was used to being hit on by musicians, and some were musicians themselves, and knew the sleazeball routine fairly well thanks to working with the Iron Horse and seeing it up close and personal, but our underage kids, we protected like mama bears.

F*ck this sleaze, and f*ck his excuses, and f*ck him and all his projects to feed his ego and fill his bed with dumb girls who believe half the crap he spouts. There are few terrible things I would not wish upon him, and only him. Jian Gohmeshi is a world class asshat and creeper.

He is a well known creeper in the business. Seriously. If you have someone you care about, and she says, "Hey, I just met Jian Gohmeshi and he says that I've got real talent..." keep her the f*ck away from him. And pretty much anyone who has anything to do with him professionally, because he surrounds himself with other creepers.

He also raises the prospect of allegations of abuse, saying, "the implication may be made that this happens non-consensually. And that will be a lie."

Well, I guess we know where this is going.

I met Jian firstly through student government when he was at Guelph and I was at MRC. While we disagreed politically, I appreciated his arguments. Later, when I was booking the school and later working in radio, our paths crossed again during the Moxy Fruvous years. Again, we got along fine. He even dated a friend of mine during that time. I found him to be a reasonably sincere guy.

I haven't talked to him in almost 20 years. If what you're saying is true, that's pretty unfortunate. It sounds like he's found a douchebag gear since then.

Now that said, what he did in this curcumstance shouldn't be cause for dismissal, if his version of events are accurate. Unless his contract had some sort of morality clause, I can't see this ending well for the CBC.

Huh.  That's honestly incredibly surprising.  Moxy Fruvous always seemed to me like it was a quirky fun little band.  I imagined the members all to be good guys who's biggest vice might be hitting the bong and the microbrews a bit too hard from time to time.

Guess you can't judge the character of the musicians by the music.

So he's no longer the King of Spain?  Now after the CBC fires him will he have to eat Humble Pie?

2014-10-27 01:38:58 AM
Not surprised the increasingly  conservative CBC brass fired him before the incoming sex scandal thingy his ex is about to unleash but I am kind of bummed because whatever else he is his interviews were always well researched and worth listening to.

Back in the day when I worked for a big hotel in Vancouver we had Moxy Fruvous in a couple of times. It wasn't much of a secret that Jian had a reputation as a poon hound.

There were a couple of girls who worked the front desk one of claimed to have slept with him a couple of times.

The management knew I think but turned a blind eye.

From my perspective I had no problem with the arrangement as it just meant one less disillusioned groupie to be gently escorted from the premises in the middle of the night after getting some famous dude off.

I'll cut him some slack for being young and living the rock star life at the time but Hubie's tale paints him in a far creepier light. 16 year olds = Not cool.

The fact that he is purportedly being fired for having indulged in a non vanilla sex in his personal life seems pretty unfair but I'm guessing we haven't heard the whole story here yet.

hubiestubert: {{CSB}}.

That's great and all but wtf does it have to do with Jian interviewing people on the radio? Gary Glitter was a pederast piece of shiat but I can still enjoy Rock & Roll Part 2.

To the topic at hand, CBC is a farking wasteland after the last two years of cuts to talent and original programming. If Chia Padapeenapetalan is going to become the host for Q they might as well close up shop. She has zero interview skills, nada, zip. I heard her ask a question, one that had obviously been written down for her ahead of time, that asked the guest to restate exactly what he had said for the last thirty seconds as he naturally branched off from her previous question. The guest was obviously confused by the question given he had already answered it, but being British he remained calm and carried on.

I preferred my headline, not that Subby's headline is bad or anything.

My headline was:

I met The Jian very briefly in the early 90's at York U, he was involved in student politics. I don't have a bad impression of him, but then again, the bug doesn't have lady parts.

But even if he is or was a world class douche, your employer can't fire you for your bedroom antics. Unless you bring their name into disrepute. This is going to be an interesting civil trial. Lots of documents are going to reveal just how messed up these guys at CBC are. It's obvious that Jian is willing to put his emails out there for public consumption. I'm betting the CBC isn't prepared for what comes next.

The CBC is a bunch of hand wringers. But they just loved the revenue of men skating around giving each other concussions, and occasionally having a fistfight. But a dude that admittedly is a fantastic interviewer, that likes some BDSM? Viewers won't like that!

This will end badly for the CBC. We need to get rid of the execs that Harper appointed. Bunch of uptight prudes who are trying to ruin the CBC so they can sell it to private interests.

I think you answered your own query there.  The guy is in the public eye and like it or not, if he didn't do a good enough job keeping his kinky side at bay a very public employer in the CBC probably has good cause to let him go.

Got to see Fruvous live a few times when they came to Colorado way back when. Great music, fun chatter between songs, and they always hung out after shows to chat with fans. I got to talk with each of 'em a little bit at more than one show. So in my limited experience I didn't think he was a bad guy, but...

1) I'm a dude.
2) Jian was probably the least approachable of the four, now that I think about it.
3) I sure didn't have any professional encounters with the band, like Hubie did.
4) I did say limited experience, didn't I?

I guess I learned something.

Unfortunately, this whole situation is a goldmine for Harper & Co. Despite the allegations being anonymous and not reported to police, and regardless of whether they're true, if the CBC hadn't fired Ghomeshi the Cons would have leaped at the chance to accuse the network of protecting a violent deviant and used that to justify cutting funding.

Since the CBC did fire him and the union is contesting it the Cons gets to bloviate about the evilness of unions and biatch about the CBC now having to spend waste public money on their legal defense due to what will undoubtedly be spun as a systemic HR/hiring failure....using that to justify cutting funding.

It'll be interesting to see which one of Harper's cronies pulls a Vic Toews* this time and implies that anyone who objects to defunding the CBC is also a violent deviant.

*Re an internet "security" bill he infamously uttered that critics of the bill could "stand with us (Conservatives) or with the child pornographers".

Interesting back stories here, assuming they are true (and having read a bunch of  hubiestubert's posts, it certainly rings true). Local NPR doesn't carry Q, but some of the Florida stations do, and I would listen when down there on business. Seemed like an accomplished interviewer, and I'm sorry for the loss of the show. On the other hand, it wasn't so compelling that I would seek it out on-line, so ...meh?

Harper was elected with less than 40% of the vote because the two major parties to the left of the conservatives split the vote. That's why whenever my American friends complain about their two-party system, I tell them to be careful what they wish for.

A multi party system in the States would split the conservative and/ or right wing vote more than the liberal and/or left wing vote since socialism is a non starter here (for now).

Btw, for those of you who have never heard of the guy, here he is conducting what is  perhaps the most awkward interview you will ever see, featuring Billy Bob Thornton.

He made the mistake of mentioning Billy Bob's acting career before interviewing him about his music career. Heaven forbid!

The women now accusing Jian Ghomeshi of violence began as his fans. Two had very similar early experiences with him. After Ghomeshi met them at public events, which he had promoted on CBC Radio, he contacted them through Facebook and asked them on dates. They eagerly accepted.
Each woman said she remembers Ghomeshi being initially sweet and flattering, then later suggesting or hinting at violent sex acts. When they failed to respond or expressed displeasure, they recalled Ghomeshi dismissing his remarks as "just fantasies," reassuring them he wouldn't ask them to do anything they weren't comfortable with. The women deny that "safe words" were employed in the relationship.
In one woman's case, she visited Ghomeshi at his Toronto home and alleges as soon as she walked into his house he suddenly struck her hard with his open hand, then continued to hit her and choked her. The woman alleges Ghomeshi repeatedly beat her about the head and choked her.
The Star's interviews of the women were lengthy. The women, all educated and employed, said Ghomeshi's actions shocked them.
Another woman, who described a similar alleged attack, said that in the lead-up to their date Ghomeshi "warned me he would be aggressive."
"I thought this meant he would want to pull my hair and have rough sex. He reassured me that I wouldn't be forced. (Later) he attacked me. Choked me. Hit me like I didn't know men hit women. I submitted."
None of the women has contacted police. When asked why by the Star, the women cited several reasons including fears that a police report would expose their names and worries that their consent or acceptance of fantasy role-play discussions in text or other messages with Ghomeshi would be used against them as evidence of consent to actual violence.
Only one of the alleged victims worked at the CBC. She never dated Ghomeshi. She alleges he approached her from behind and cupped her rear end in the Q studio, and that he quietly told her at a story meeting that he wanted to "hate f---" her.
The woman said she complained about Ghomeshi's behaviour to her union representative, who took the complaint to a Q producer. As the woman recalls, the producer asked her "what she could do to make this a less toxic workplace" for herself. No further action was taken by the CBC, and the woman left the broadcaster shortly thereafter."

If that is true, he should probably be in jail.

I haven't even thought about Moxy Früvous in years so I'm getting a kick...

TuteTibiImperes: Huh.

There's image, and then there's the professional relationship. The Bobs are a quirky a capella group, and well beloved, much like The Nields who are another quirky little band based out of Western Mass. Both are pains in the tochis to work with, and treat staff and venues atrociously. Fans? Oh, they love their fans. Owners of venues? Oh, they love those folks. Reporters? Oh, they love reporters. The public face, and how folks treat those that they directly work with, those are entirely different things. The Bobs are horrible folks to work with, that are charming as heck with folks that have money for them, or free publicity. The Nields, they are just terrible people, who have big fish in a small pond syndrome in Western Mass, and love their family image and with a lot of skeletons in the closet. Moxy? They were pains in the ass from the get go, and yeah, they projected an image, and maybe even believed it, but Jian was always a bit of a predator. His relationship with various singer-songwriters who came through The Iron Horse always had that vibe as well. There's a lot of that within the music business.

What I learned in running part of the club, was to judge folks on how they treated folks who could do nothing for them. Willy Nelson, amazing guy, and everyone attached to his tours was absolutely genuine and decent--down to the Hells Angels who provided security, who washed their own dishes because they didn't want to put anyone out. Wynton Marsalis is a hard taskmaster, but you show you can do the job, and he's warm and engaging. Shemekia Copeland is warm, enthusiastic, and fun. Candye Kane is a great gal, and her porn past, and stage show are all out in the open, and she's easily one of my favorite people who came through The Horse, and everyone in her band or attached to her tours was great. Warren Zevon may have had a troubled past, but when we dealt with him, he was humble, he was professional to a huge degree, and decent to everyone from the dishwasher on up. Meshell Ndegocello and her band were amazing all around. Mike Franti and Spearhead were always favorites for us, even if the fans were sometimes a pain in the ass, because they were great to have around. They Might Be Giants, the guys are quirky as heck, but always fun to work with. Cat Power? She had one booking with us, and it ended badly, because of her behavior. Buckwheat Zydeco was a pain in the ass, and always looking to shave points, and diva-ed up the joint. Luther Johnson was always easy to work with, and great with his fans, and the club. Dar Williams? I babysat for her, and that's not usually in my resume, but in fairness, she traded watching my daughter, and I trusted her after working with her for years. She's just a great human being, and yeah, I love her work too.

There are a lot of great folks touring this country, and the public persona doesn't always line up with how they treat people in private. Some have good days, and some have bad days. Some are just working the crowd, and getting paid. Some are exactly the folks you'd think, and some are just looking to get paid. Some are just happy to be working and love what they do, some are not terribly happy with the business, and it shows. Moxy were a band, and Jian was looking for some trim, constantly. I have little doubt that he still is.

What an idiot. Hitting women for sexual gratification on casual dates is just an incredibly BAD IDEA.

The women involved should really go to the police however.

poot_rootbeer: You know the accusations against him are serious when his strategy for getting out in front of the story is to admit being a big kinky pervert.

Nailed it.

If he's open about all that, then he's not being open about all the really bad stuff. And he's a "good interviewer?" Wow, that's a rare skill. How will they ever replace him? Maybe with a "social media expert" or something.

/never heard of him before
//don't give a fark
