That sounds like a very small bridge. Were I there, I simply would have jumped across. Is the bridge for small mice and babies?
I am confused... or am i?
I am.
Seriously d00d

If I see any centimeters, I'll step on them!

Oh my God! The bridge is closed???!!! Call the (Canadian) Marines!

2004-02-20 07:04:02 PM
Wow....oh no...a bridge was closed. Thank goodness for that one "staffer" guy. The entire economy could have collapsed if he hadn't saved the day.

I guess it really makes me wonder how people manage day to day life there if a snowy bridge halts the community. Then in a grand action, 1 man with a miracle shovel is able to selflessly restore peace and order so fast that it's newsworthy.

2004-02-20 07:06:34 PM
Bah, I spent three hours shovelling snow this morning. Atlantic Canada just got hit with a MASSIVE storm.

2004-02-20 07:06:47 PM
wow this story is so amazingly amazing that i think im going to impale myself on a hoover vacuum cleaner.

2004-02-20 07:06:53 PM
I would love to live in an area where this kind of crap is news.

You know it's a slow news day when, not only is this NEWS, but they have a PHOTOGRAPHER sent there to shoot pictures..

2004-02-20 07:10:43 PM
Dont you guys get the symbology?
On one side of the bridge is America, and on the other side is Europe. The bridge is "healthy diplomatic relations."
Tha man in the story is John Kerry, and he clears the bridge with his shovel of righteousness, ensuring healthy diplomatic relations between the US and the European powers.
Geez you guys are dense.

I'm glad I live in a part of this great land that has very few shiaty stories like this.

2004-02-20 07:12:23 PM
But where is the science?

2004-02-20 07:13:47 PM
Dad?

2004-02-20 07:13:49 PM
I think every day in Canada is a slow news day. Check out the main page. Three (count 'em, three!!) stories about bridges. Soo Today: all the bridge news that's fit to print.

2004-02-20 07:14:18 PM
Brigadier General Gavin: What's the best way to take a bridge?
Maj. Julian Cook: Both ends at once.
Brigadier General Gavin: I'm sending two companies across the river by boat. I need a man with very special qualities to lead.
Maj. Julian Cook: Go on, sir.
Brigadier General Gavin: He's got to be tough enough to do it and he's got to be experienced enough to do it. Plus one more thing. He's got to be dumb enough to do it... Start getting ready.
Junior Officer: what was all that about, Major?
Maj. Julian Cook: Well someone's come up with a real nightmare. Real nightmare

The science is in the shovel, with it's amazing wedge shape to get under the snow, and its powerfull see-saw action to use your arm as an anchor and lift that snow off of the ground.

Isn't science groovy?

Sault Ste Marie is pronounced Sue Saint MaRee (or maybe So Saint). Originally named for the falls (sault) of the St. Mary's River (a.k.a. the Virgin Mary). It's a city on the Ontario border, with a smaller twin across the river in Michigan.

Just thought I'd share.

2004-02-20 07:26:14 PM
The entire city has a twin on the other side of the river?

freaky.

which side has the goatee's?

2004-02-20 07:27:58 PM
[insert standard rant about how crap like this gets posted and mine doesn't]

2004-02-20 07:29:29 PM
That scary part is the stuff they AREN'T reporting about this story....

For instance, no mention of the troll that lives under the aforementioned footbridge, nor of its alien origins.

They totally left out the part where Michael Jackson was seen helping young boys across the footbridge and the subsequent disappearance of said boys.

And, most ominously, the fact that that last time this particular footbridge was closed due to this much snow, a MINI ICE AGE occured that took the entire planet into the Dark Ages and set back civilisation by centuries.

You see, a little investigation into these types of fluff pieces can really turn up some ghastly facts.

Hey, WTF is going on Today? A few links today have been total bunk, this one included.

Although quite funny, it doesn't seem to be the "ususal" FARK material.

Is Drew on vacation or something? Oh, that's right, he's in SC for the FARK party. Have fun Drew.

So, for all of us who submitted stories about

ESA's commitment to Mars
Sexbots on the web
WMDs found in Libya
110 Volts causes cancer
The second Coming of the Great Prophet Zarquon

I can only say
get a new admin-bot, Drew.

2004-02-20 07:46:37 PM
Careful, Tillmaster. Drew is one of the admin-bots.

2004-02-20 07:46:39 PM
We can cure cancer and put a robot on Mars but we can't stop the snow from overtaking pedestian bridges?

15-30 cm big deal I'm up here in Nova Scotia, just had a nasty blizzard 95 cm of snow.

2004-02-20 08:00:18 PM
Someone should beat the crap out of the reporter that brought us this story. I am normally not a violent person, but I feel dumber now that I have read this article.

2004-02-20 08:22:40 PM
Err... just now? Funny, thats a standard feeling for me when I read any article on this site.

Soo must be a very exciting place.

I would personally nominate this story to earn the "hero" tag

They are on to us guys. Follow up article
Now showing up on Fark is big news in the Soo, we may very well have corrupted them.

2004-02-20 08:57:25 PM
Well, since someone from Soo is reading this page now, maybe they want to comment on how Jeff Carter is playing for the Greyhounds.

2004-02-20 08:58:40 PM
slangwise never quoted me in his articles either.

*sulking*

2004-02-20 08:59:01 PM
The least he could have done is included the link I spent a whole 15 seconds making. Or give a shout out to Melly and Marcie in the Soo for me.

For the record, I originally submitted this link, and now fear I may have created an international incident and have to go on Conan and talk about wetting the bed or something.

2004-02-20 09:03:48 PM
Who's responsible for such an irresponsible decision? Close a bridge because of snow? Are you kidding -- this is Canada, get a shovel, help your neighbour, whats the surprise?

2004-02-20 09:06:16 PM
That was one of the more enjoyable news stories in an otherwise uneventful day.
