(AL.com)   You have to show up and get in line 3 hours before AL's DMV branches open to have any hope of getting a driver's license before they close for the day, 12 hours later. That the state recently passed a "voter ID" law is, I'm sure, total coincidence   (al.com) divider line 135

This should pose no obstacle to the poor folks targeted by that law, since poor people don't work or if they do work they have the kinds of jobs with generous leave and flex time benefits.

Or the opposite of that, whatever!

Looks to me like it's not so much a conspiracy to disenfranchise poor black voters so much as it is gross incompetence at and endemic level.

Someone should seek a court order to equitably require that government facilities that issue voter ID must act like polling stations, in that all people who arrive in line before the close of business must be given complete service before the staff may go home. That, or argue that 12 hours in line constitutes an effective poll tax, and ask as equitable relief a prohibition on the state's enforcement of voter ID laws until it gets the service time down under an hour.

Maybe both.

If more or less the EXACT same thing hadn't been happening in Wisconsin using the same excuse (budget  cuts) I'd be inclined to agree with you,

Perhaps the whole "government is an incompetent thievery cabal" argument carries a lot more weight when you take over a government and deliberately drive it into a bridge abutment.  "See, we told you government is fundamentally flawed!  Also, there is no money to repair that bridge abutment."

In Nevada they made it legal for illegal immigrants to get a driver's license. As a result, there were a few months where the DMV was a total hellscape, while all the illegals got their licenses. Now that a few months have passed, most of that initial demand has subsided. And now that the illegals can get a license, they can also get insurance...which is nice.

Whenever you enact something like this, there's going to be a huge rush at the beginning. My advice would be to avoid the DMV if at all possible, for the next couple of months.

The problem with that is that there are primary elections going on about now.

In Atlanta it takes the better part of a day to get a license. It's why they started doing 10 year licenses. It's clearly incompetent management and an absolutely unmotivated employee base. Watching those DMV employees shuffle a single piece of paper around for 5 minutes is infuriating. It's been that way since I got my first license there in 1995.

Who goes to the DMV if they can avoid it in the first place?

Did they close DMV branches that served the areas where those who they seek to disenfranchise live, like Wisconsin did?

While I don't really have a problem with Voter ID laws, if legislatures are going to pass these laws, they also should make getting IDs convenient.  Some people have to work during the day and can't take time off from their peanuts-for-pay jobs to try and make it to the DMV before 4 PM.

Possibly.  I tend to believe in the saying, "don't attribute to malice that which can easily be attributed to stupidity."

I've been saying for a while now that if they want voter ID laws, they should make the post office a fully gov't run entity and make it possible to get your state issued ID there, in your neighborhood

Please consider what policy was enacted that is causing this rush and why all of those people are trying to get their license. Now look at a calendar.

Would you like to take a minute to think about what you just said?

That option comes off the table after there've been countless articles and comments previously noting that a voter ID law would produce just these results.  The folks that made this happen did so with the full intent that this would happen.  And they're pleased that it did.

perhaps it's because Alabama is the Redneck capital of the South.

Alabama has a nasty habit of licking big business/corporate ass while cornholing its own 'citizens'.   ex: Honda only pays ~3% state tax while the average, broke, alabamian pays 11 to 12%.

and 'bama is hard core Right Red State.  that means Jesus, who was a progressive in his day, is the King and big business does as they goddamned well please.  the hell with the bottom 99% of alabama schmucks, who consistently vote Republican because many are too uneducated and too brainwashed by FOX News to know any better.  it must really suck not knowing who is working against your interests.

ain't alabama Freedom great!

So when it comes to healthcare, the DMV (or MVA, or some other TLA) is the absolute worst thing in the world.

When it comes to being gatekeepers for the levers of democracy (the gauntlet we all have to run to get the IDs we need for the polls), the DMV is the cat's pajamas.

it's both, but it is also the fact that 'bama wants to keep those tax cuts coming to the Owners.  they lick Owner ass by default and it that hurts the bottom 99%, so be it.

Alabama is a F*ckTard state full of FOX News brainwashed republicans.

Although the conspiracy to disenfranchise poor black voters is certainly a great disincentive to fixing the problems.
And as the article notes, it's probably not gross incompetence - the state of Alabama has cut it's share of the funding for their DMV's by almost forty percent since 2008.

What's the cause of the huge rush?  Alabama isn't Nevada, it hasn't allowed illegals to get driver's licenses.  And you certainly can't blame it upon the voter ID law, because I have been told over and over again that everyone already has ID because it is practically impossible to be able to breath without one.

It looks more like the problem is  YOU GET A TAX CUT AND YOU GET A TAX CUT EVERYBODY GETS A TAX CUT caused tax revenues to drop significantly, which, in turn, means funding for everything gets cut (the Farking article talks about cuts to state police and other departments as well).
