Looks to me like some of the Precambrian fossils that have been found. We may be looking at the descendents of some of the earliest forms of multicellular life.

My god how I loved that game. I don't think I've ever encountered better writing or dialogue in a video game before or since.

Actually, the article (the actual scientific writeup) even hints at that possibility--notes the resemblance to some of the weirdo Ediacaran fossils that we don't know what the hell kingdom they belong in, and call for further research (and specimens) to see if we might have the great-grandma of all Lazarus taxa here :D
