(SeattlePI)   Will U2 be playing Apple's mysterious event being held on September 9th? More importantly, can that much smug and pretension be contained in one confined space when U2 and Apple combine?   (blog.seattlepi.com) divider line 33

The German word fremdschämen means to be vicariously embarrassed for a stranger. Whenever I think of U2, I think of the time Bono tried to be cool and make the Pope wear his cool sunglasses.

/That's just makes me squirm with embarrassment.

I guess I'm out of the loop. I loved U2 back in the 80s and early 90s. Did they do something since then?

Yes.....and yet no.
And therein lies the problem.

They are still popular with certain lawyers, apparently. The pro-bono types.

Yeah. It's kind of amazing how many otherwise rational people let that show dictate their opinions.

I liked their "All That You Can't Leave Behind" album, but even that was 14 years ago.

We should be fine unless Farrari comes on as a sponsor.

If Kanye West was there too it would be the equivalent of dividing by zero and could possibly tear a hole in the fabric of space/time.

Has their music in the past decade been anything but tedious?  Coasting on past glory.  Wait, maybe they are a perfect match for Apple.

Android users have a wider screen on their smug, as well as greater smug customization options.

Homer: There can only be one truly great festival a lifetime and it's the "Us Festival".

Clerk: The what festival?

Homer: The "Us Festival"! Geez! It was sponsored by the guy from Apple Computers.

Clerk: What computers?

Good thing Jobs is dead. His presence would have been enough to collapse the smug into a black turtleneck hole.

U2?? Is it 1992 already?

sure haven't: U2?? Is it 1992 already?

I'm old enough to remember when U2 was almost entirely unpretentious. That would have been the mid-1980's. By 1992, the pretentiousness was already in full swing.

Yup. They reached peak retention with Rattle and Hum in '88.

CSB: I was living in Dublin at the time and if the radio alternated between U2 and "Don't Worry, Be Happy." What a dark, dark time for humanity.

There was actually a time when listening to U2 or REM made you edgy, kind of a pre-hipster.

Not in my recollection. "Boy" was just plain ol' college rock. I think you might be thinking of Elvis Costello.

Accusing the bands you don't like of being pretentious or hipster-ish is about the most pretentious, hipster-ish thing imaginable.

Isn't it funny how that works?
