I have a theory. 1st of all it was only the Howells that had trunks and trunks of clothes and cash. Everyone else wore the same clothes (and yeah, that might get a bit funky fairly soon). I think that they were fleeing some major money scandal but they couldn't get the boat all to themselves. They were going to off everyone else but they ran aground instead and needed them to survive.

\the guy who played Thurstion, Jim Backus, was a card cheat who welshed on a poker game using travelers checks that he canceled as soon as he left the game. Grandpa was pissed.

some_beer_drinker: he did what now?

In the 1960's my grandpa had a running nighttime back room card game at his cigar store on Mission Street in San Francisco (now it's the 24th and Mission BART station or thereabouts). He would get a lot of not-so-famous people in there (some San Francisco famous people but for most people they would be all like "Who?"), but on occasion he would get Hollywood famous people (Jim Baccus, Groucho Marx and so on) sitting in. Jim Baccus paid off his gambling debt using Travelers Checks, close to $500 which was a lot back then. Then as soon as he left he reported them stolen and of course, being illegal gambling debts, those weren't ever going to get paid back. He was never allowed back of course. As I understand it he had a hard time getting into a game anywhere from that point on unless he had cold hard cash.

Abacus9: You're grandpa sounds cool as hell.

He was. He died of cancer in 1974 but I can remember his store. The smells were fantastic. Cherry. Walnut. Apple. Aromatic as hell. All kinds of dumb souvenir type crap from chap transistor radios to those birds that dipped into water. But that's not where the money was. I suspect that my dad sort of gave him cover (he was SFPD in the same district) but... oh

Apparently he was trying to get to Marina Del Rey and missed the harbor entrance, which isn't lighted except for you know, standard navigation lights and buoys and everything else a marina would have.

Yeah, he was either drunk as a skunk or woefully incompetent.

Nope, only the Skipper, Gilligan and the Professor wore the same clothes. Ginger and Mary Ann had booty shorts, bikinis, miniskirts, leotards, fancy dresses. high heeled shoes, jeans, sweaters and in a few episodes Mary Ann was wearing one of the Professor's blue shirts to sleep in (hmmmm....).
