How do you kill that which has no life?

I've played that game at least 10 times. Good, evil, mix, maximum XP, etc.

And every single time I played I killed that Tenpenny bastard. If he wasn't on a balcony 50 stories up I might've spared him a couple times, but it's too much fun launching his evil ass over that railing in various ways.

Ditto.

Though I think the premise is wearing a bit thin at this point. I looked up the timeline and it's been about 125 years in game-time since the first game to the end of New Vegas.

I'd honestly think we should start to see humanity repopulate the world, build a few cities, etc. 3 generations in game time alone, somewhere between 250 and 300 years since the war/nukes. I'd think even with the mutants and such, we'd start to see an almost complete depletion of pre-war supplies of plastic, metal, all medicine would be ruined, and the population should be evolving to be largely radiation resistant, since we've seen a massive catastrophic event it would have forced evolution on humanity (i.e. only the ones resistant to higher-than-normal radiation levels would survive and flourish).

It just feels like the 'wastelands' really shouldn't be quite as desolate as they are, and that they shouldn't have so many vast 'unexplored' vaults/temples/etc.

tl:dr - rambling post about how the concept of fallout is getting a bit worn thin to me

I tried Fallout 3 today, for the first time.

So I get born (please let me start the game), have to choose my name and gender (OK, can I start the game now?), grow up to 10 (OK, the game is not going to start, fark this shiat).

Has Besheda ever made anything that is not horricrap?

---

Only enjoyable thing in the game was to walk out of a room as a toddler, and slam the door to my father. And hear him talking to no-one through the door.

---

Seriously. Besheda. Every single farking game you've made, the player is not allowed to start the farking game.

He's got a point. Games that take half an hour to begin between loading, choosing a character, going through a training session, watching backstory, more backstory, some kind of weird puzzle to escape from wherever you start the game, etc., are ridiculous.

It's the same with cutscenes you can't skip, especially on a game with preset save points, and it keeps reloading to just before some stupid scene.

Story with a game is great, but too much story building is stupid. And I'm not exaggerating that much with the 1/2 an hour thing. I've played games before where the beginning of her game is pretty close to that. The intro to Skyrim is another example. Just give me the option to start where I choose sides so that if it's my 3rd run through I don't have to ride around in the wagon, almost die, see a dragon, escape, and make my final decision....

I love playing on PC for, well, many reasons, but the mod community is a big part of it. I love the slow intros in Bethesda games every once in awhile, as it really sets the mood (especially Morrowind, I thought), but so many other times I just want to get to the game. I haven't looked for Fallout 3, but I know there are quickstart mods for Skyrim. I'd imagine there are for Fallout as well. Look them up if you're on PC.

For a game where most people spend upwards of 200-300 hours on one playthrough, spending 15 minutes on some background and basic tutorial seems pretty insignificant.

This also misses the point that the game autosaves right before you exit the vault. As long as you never overwrite this save, you can reload it and change the character as much as you want. You only have to play the intro once.

I'm playing C&C Generals for the first time, after getting the entire series off Amazon for $7. Everytime I restart a mission, I have to sit through the damn cutscene again. I just started saving a game immediately, and hitting reload save, and it's a lot faster when you're in the mood to retry something after failing.

I dunno. I am sort of hoping to see link ups in the next to the events from 3 and New Vegas. Sort of like I'm hoping that DA: Inquisition will see links between Hawke and The Grey Warder. The Wanderer and the Courier both had huge impact in their areas--between the rise or fall of the Brotherhood, the rise or fall of the Enclave, and the rise or fall of the NCR, the Legion, and again, good news or bad for The Brotherhood of Steel--and in both, you see the failings of the Brotherhood, and their ideology. In both, you've got events outstripping their control, and in both, you've got potential for blooming of the Wastelands. Between the Waters of Life, Harold's blooming of the DC area, the Big MT's research, and control of Lake Meade, and the potential for actual air power in support of New Vegas and organization beyond just the NCR or the Legion, and increased communication with the tribes of Zion, and actual warning about the Tunnelers, you've got a world that starting to bounce back. Even The Pitt shows that there's potential to heal the scars left. Rather than just folks looking to create armies of mutants, or naked power grabs, you've got growth. Potential for more than just fighting over scraps.

The Lone Wanderer brings water and life to DC and its environs--possibly wiping out mutants or rejecting that vision--and on top of it, you've got a whole lot of potential for bringing the area back from the brink. Not just by super science, but by getting people to work together. New Vegas had similar themes in not just the use of a robot army to quell either the NCR or the Legion or both with a free New Vegas, but the potential for bringing a lot of folks back from the brink. Opening lines of communication, opening new roads, that was a big part of the appeal that New Vegas had for me, with the Courier's story. And likewise, the law of unintended consequences from The Lonesome Road and Old World Blues and Honest Hearts.

A fourth Fallout...I hope looks at these events. New connections, blooming society, maybe older threats coupled with new opportunists. I don't think that it's exhausted for ideas, I think that it's not going to be the same dreary settings though. I'm hoping for more color and entirely new structures that don't rely on the old world's tech, not in the same ways. I like the themes that the old factions are failing. That leaves a lot of potential, to see these factions scrambling for relevancy.

2014-09-03 12:44:00 AM
I plan to do this later with Skyrim. Course I've already accidentally killed at least three companions. Damn you Lydia
