(NPR)   Greil Marcus on what makes a rock song essential: "It's not the stature of the performer, but the degree to which a song tells the story of rock 'n' roll itself"   ( npr.org) divider line

That may be the most pretentious RS article I've ever read. And the bar was pretty damn high.

I hope he didn't write that without his black turtleneck.

This is not the greatest post in the world. This is just a tribute.

Lipstick Traces was awesome, but entirely by accident. The rest of his body of work? He should have been a writer for Tiger Beat. The dude could write a thousand overheated words about Taylor Swift's new song in about five minutes, all the while arguing that it was at once a spring day and a harbinger of the apocalypse, with Johnny Rotten and Elvis lurking in the shadows somewhere.

Greil Marcus. My least favorite rock writer ever. Yeah, of course it's a piece of shiat. Marcus represents everything that's wrong with criticism. He's a walking caricature of an effete pseudo-intellectual.

All rock songs should be sung by Lemmy.

The things people do to make themselves feel important, jeebus.

I feel bad for clicking the link, and subby should feel bad too.

I use the Potter Stewart methodology: I know it when I see it.

What tells the story of rock and roll itself?  Obviously it's any song with "Rock" or "Rocking" or "Rock and Roll" in the title.  So, all those jazz and blues songs from back in the day, about 2/3 of the records cut between 1955 and '58, almost anything by AC/DC, a good third of what bar bands play to audiences of drunk twentysomethings and Woo! girls, and songs to sell pickups.

The answer is in TFA

You write that every rock 'n' roll song about money flows to or from this track. And you go through the song "Money Changes Everything," which, again, I thought was a Cyndi Lauper original, but you write about how it came from an Atlanta punk band group called The Brains.

Cyndi.. Looper?

The shiattiness of music is directly proportional to the pretentiousness of its performers

Greil Marcus is a very good writer. He just tends to be a sloppy, lazy, undisciplined, and self-indulgent thinker.
I mean, "Guitar Drag". Really, Greil?. Get over yourself.

It's bad enough Rock is  viewed as geezer stuff. They need to stop talking all big words and geezery

There is such a thing as spewing nonsense. There is also something called obfuscation.

Here Are 10 Obscure Songs I Enjoy: The Book

When your main criteria for judging 10 songs that tell the history of rock n roll is how they happen to make YOU feel, you're doing it wrong

I wish I could be impressed by this.  RnR isn't supposed to grow - it has to regenerate.

But that's just my problem.

"Lipstick Traces" was far from awesome.

I've read most of Greil Marcus has written, and yeah, he's a pretentious twat. Hell of a record collection, and if you love Bob Dylan you do have to read him.

Yes to first part of that sentence, pass on the second.

Songs about rock and roll are stupid, or at least the lyrics are. Just vapid bullshiat. That's not a commentary on the musical content. This writer sounds like an idiot.

You asked her if she wanted some rhythm and love, and she said she wanted to rock n roll instead?
