Zucker's goal is for CNN to have as much current news as The Weather Channel does current weather.  Though I will admit the documentaries of the former on the whole are better than the reality of the latter. But PBS still kicks CNN's ass on the documentary front.

I think I remember CNN. They were big in the 1990's, right? Like Blockbuster or something.

I got laid off last year. I got about 20 minutes to get my stuff together and tell my boss what I wanted shipped and what they could toss out. Not even a chance to send a goodbye email. Then when I received the box of my things they shipped from the office, a few things were broken in transit because they didn't even bother to wrap the items properly.* Also I was followed around so it seemed that they just wanted to terminate me as fast as possible.

I worked in Facilities/Office management, so I had to ship out many many boxes over the years for other people laid off. My boss made damn sure those shipments were wrapped like we were shipping museum pieces yet my stuff was not so carefully wrapped. Oh well.

However, CNN is in the midst of expanding its digital staff in Washington, D.C. as it prepares for the 2016 presidential race. The news giant recently recruited Politico alum Rachel Smolkin as executive editor for politics to spearhead an elaborate digital initiative out of D.C. Dejardins' departure was part of a restructuring of CNN's Washington bureau and not part of the buyout offer.

"Digital staff". Heh.

They're hiring part-time bloggers who will go to the bars in DC and listen for rumors from low-level Congressional staff. This is just sad.

You know, they could take all that stupid hologram money and you know, pay for some actual reporters...

"Given the current focus on reducing costs and prioritizing investments to maximize company performance, Turner will also undertake additional reductions in staffing," the memo read.

Here's an idea: How about reporting some goddamned news, you f*cking imbeciles!

I took CNN and FOXNooz out of my channel lineup on Dish.

I can watch an hour of Noticiero Univisión, BBC, or Al Jazeera and get more news than I could watching CNN and Fox for a week. They deserve to fail, although it sucks for their employees who have no influence.

CNN could save itself and rake in viewers and money if it did tried doing something that MSNBC and Faux News don't do: REPORT THE FARKING NEWS!

Stop with all the spin and all the pundits and all the missing white girl stories and just report the news as it happens.

Clear out all the dead weight personalities like Blitzer and hire real journalists to do real journalism.

I know that sounds revolutionary but BBC News and Al Jazeera both do a pretty damn good job of it. However, since not everyone gets those channels but everyone gets CNN, CNN is missing a golden opportunity,

/Sorry if that makes no sense.

ecmoRandomNumbers: Here's an idea: How about reporting some goddamned news, you f*cking imbeciles!

Problem:  There's only so much news every day.  And there are 24 hours of air time they feel obligated to fill each day.

There's simply no way to have a news channel only reporting news 24 hours a day.  That's what got us in the farking mess in the first place.  So instead they have show after show after show of cretins pontificating on the news with occasional ***OMG BREAKING NEWS*** interruptions.

Check out BBC as I'm sure you have.  The do pure news, but after a short while they start repeating the same news over again despite covering a far wider array of subjects and regions than CNN does.  The problem is American news networks think that is a problem.

^^^Sorta of what I suspected, but glad to have it confirmed.

I only get to see Fox and CNN news when I am travelling. Last time was when I was on holidays in Indonesia and the Jerry Sandusky scandal had just broke. It was farking ridiculous. Both stations, they seemed to devote 50% of their attention to Sandusky, every time I turned on the hotel TV, for about FIVE FARKING DAYS STRAIGHT.

In Oz we have a government funded 24 hour free-to-air news station. At various times they show BBC, Al Jazeera, and a German news service spoken in English [the name eludes me]. All outstanding sources of info compared to the rare times I've watched the crud that comes from the USA**.

Another government funded station airs **PBS NewsHour which is also rather watchable, albeit a bit USA-politics heavy to get a proper "world news" slant.

Shrugging Atlas: There's simply no way to have a news channel only reporting news 24 hours a day.

There most certainly is enough news for 24 hours.  But the combination of expenses and boring nature of having to go too far away from "home base" would make it a complete failure in the ratings.

Deutsche Welle (DW)?  They do a half hour weekly magazine in English on PBS called "European Journal"  I miss former host Jim Gibbons.

They're all on the decline, except for FoxNews of course, because they've locked in the old folks. When those generations are gone they'll be in trouble too.

I would say the whole 24hr newschannel business model is looking pretty grim these days.

I don't know about anyone else, but I lost respect for CNN/HLN when they started bringing Twitter and Facebook comments into the mix. If I cared what Dolores from Poughkeepsie thought, I'd ask her.

Yeah, they started that with the Iran protests in 2008. For that event, in the absence of any other independent media, it was relevant.

Yeah, this.

They've been trending downward for quite some time, but the Boston Marathon was a debacle of such epic proportions, the employees should have been fine tuning their exit strategies on an hourly basis ever since.
