If he manages to clear waivers, he'll easily make the practice squad.

That's a big IF.  I wouldn't be surprised to see someone that's not as deep at the position take a flyer on him...

He'll be picked up by some team, guaranteed. I'd love for him to clear waivers and end up on the Rams practice squad, but that's unlikely. He's going to be a good player in the NFL.

He certainly wouldn't be a bigger distraction than the guy suspended for 9 games.

I can't imagine him clearing waivers after his preseason.  The Rams have ridiculous depth at that position, so hopefully nobody accuses them or Fischer of being homophobic.

True and I'm sure someone will claim it since that will fit a narrative they'd like to push.

Anyone accusing him of that would be an out and out retard, as Fischer is the guy who drafted him in the first place.

Well assuming that he doesn't stick anywhere in the NFL I'm curious as to what (if any) CFL team has his negotiation rights.  Since he's a bit undersized he actually has a build that is preferable for a CFL rush end.

I want him in Green Bay. Matthews could use a dance partner and we do need another DE with Raji on IR.

Michael Sam does not suck. At all. The guy can play. He just ran up against an impossibly deep D-line in St. Louis. There are teams that need Sam desperately.

The 49ers already have 2 or 3 guys behind Aldon Smith that are no worse than Sam, although at least one of them seems every bit as capable of getting himself suspended as Smith. The Raiduhs, though, might could still use another pass rusher, along with damn near everything else, including a head coach.

I don't know, why didn't anyone draft Tom Brady until Round 6? Draft order is not equivalent to actual football skill.

Once a player is released by his team, other teams can put in a claim for him based on their position on the waiver wire...which is based on a lot of factors.  If no teams put a claim in on the player, the team that released him can sign him to their practice squad, injured reserve, non-football injury list, etc...

Why am I not surprised?  It seems like Jim Popp (Montreal's GM) likes treat his negotiation list as his own personl fantasy football team (Tim Tebow, Troy Smith, Ochocinco and now Sam) and at 2-7 it shows...

Since everyone is cutting and unless one team's DE depth chart decide to have a coke-and-domestic-violence party, Sam will make the Rams PS.

He's a 4-3 DE. Don't really see him fitting in the SF scheme. Raiders or Denver would be a better fit.

And just to clarify, if multiple claims are made on a player, the team with the highest waiver position wins the rights to player and has to assume their contract (usually not an issue with rookies and undrafted but can be a significant factor with veterans). If a player is claimed, the team has to free up a position on their 53 man roster which usually requires cutting someone else. If no one claims the player then they become a free agent and can negotiate a contract with anyone.   At noon tomorrow a feeding frenzy commences as teams can sign unclaimed players to their practice squads.  Usually this is players from the teams training camp but you can pick players from anywhere if you have a need.

Michael Sam may be courted by many teams if he is unclaimed.  Going back to St Louis keeps him in the system he learned but there is significant depth at the position making it harder for him to break into the NFL.  He may be better served by going to another team where it is more likely he could be moved up to the 53 man roster if an injury occurs. There are gambles in either approach as abandoning a system you just spent months learning and developing a relationship with a staff you are new to can be difficult.

There are teams with dumpster fires for a pass rush as it stands. Dallas, San Diego, Cincinnati.

All other teams get 24 hours to say 'I want him' and if more than one team does, then the one with the worse record gets him.  Also in that first 24 hours, the other teams cannot directly contact him.  After 24 hours (if not claimed), he is officially a free agent and can sign with anyone.

If Johnny Football was named the starter I could see the Bengals picking Sam up for the Browns games alone.

If Bill Belichick offers to sign Michael Sam, Sam should be concerned that sooner or later a locker room video of him might wind up in some streaming porn site's "hidden cam" section.

You can only say that now in hindsight because Brady has proven himself, you can't say the same for Sam. The same things that kept teams from drafting him are still there.

If I were running the team, I'd have snatched him up as soon as the news broke. Denver's D made some really good changes this offseason, and adding a potential rookie phenom would be a great addition. :-)

I think Sam HAS proven himself, at least enough to get a job on someone's roster. The rest can be taken from there, yes, but he constantly made himself a factor every time he was on the field. I'm not worrying that he was against last-stringers because that's not something he can control. He doesn't get to pick his opponents. He can only decide what he does to those opponents, and he did some terrible, terrible things to the opponents he was given.

I hope there won't be any anti-Fischer articles after this. He did everything right from start to finish and was probably the best environment for Sam to have his start. Because of the way JF handled preseason, Sam has a shot at making the roster somewhere since he showed the "distraction" argument doesn't work against Sam. (if not, he's pretty much a practice squad lock I'd guess).

He is an undersized defensive end.  You can't teach size unfortunately.  That doesn't mean he can't have a career, but he doesn't fit the norms at the position and it will always work against him when compared with other players. Size matters in the NFL.

Great college players often can't translate to the pros and it isn't a knock on their talent or work ethic. Heisman trophy winners have been busts more often than you would think. Michael Sam isn't going anywhere and it can take awhile to break in the league.  Going to a practice squad is a great way to get with a team, master the playbook, then be prepared for the next training camp when you have a better chance to break through.
