Really sad that the kid died, but if you let an 18-year old drive a car like that, you have to be prepared for him to wreck it.

Any claims adjusters in the house? Who pays for this - the driver's insurance or the car owner's insurance?

REALLY? They pronounced him dead at the hospital? I'm pretty sure that call could have been made at the scene.
" well, this part's dead. Oh, this one too. Oh, here's another part of him. check and see... nope, dead too"

Nobody wants that paperwork. I don't mean to sound cold, but a lot of time the corpse keeps getting pushed down the line until he's at the hospital. And if there is any chance, even .01%, then it won't get called.

Impromptu test drive at 2 am? kind of random.

When I was seventeen, before passing my test and had only a provisional licence my cousin let me take his car for a spin, a drive to a town ten miles away and back. It was a Jaguar XJ12 Coupe, the two door version.
But I didn't wreck the car, or try to do anything stupid. I did overtake another car on a straight, so I didn't exactly dawdle either.

/I guess we only hear about the cases, like this one, that go badly wrong.

It's one thing to wreck a car. It's another thing to wreck a life. And all the people connected to dead son.

Where I live insurance on the car covers anybody driving the car with the owner's permission, and any named insured temporarily using a non-owned car (e.g. a rental). New York also requires registered cars (rather than drivers) to have insurance, so at least the owner's policy will apply.

My uncle and a friend took a car for a test drive as teenagers and flipped it. They survived and he led a full life but when he was in his 80s he had spinal problems as a result of damage done in the crash.

Never had car worth $20000 and still wouldn't let an 18 drive it.

DNRTFA, but I assume this is the 18 year old kid killed driving the lamborghini where high speeds were involved and the owner was in the passenger seat.

Sorry, not feeling sorry.

Supercar trifecta in play?

2014-08-30 09:04:44 PM
Did anyone read the story?  The 49 year old male owner of the car met the 18 year old dude in a parking lot an agreed to let him drive the car.  I'll bet the conversion went something like this: "Sam, let's have a few drinks and take the Lamborghini out for a test drive. BTW, ever had a massage from a man?"

I thought that was a Bugo, dude.

He said: 'I think it was probably just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the kid, and this man chose to give him this opportunity.'

I'm positive it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Could have been easily avoided by: NOT DOING STUPID shiat. Oh and car owner is sooooo gettin' sued

I broke a piece of trim under the front of a 2012 Toyota Corolla I was test driving a couple of years ago. I was in an empty parking lot testing out the car's traction control and associated features, went just a hair too fast at one point, and nosed onto a snowbank at about 5 MPH.

It's almost the same thing.

The teenager, who had graduated from Mount Sinai High School in June was looking forward to joining the elite Army Rangers and was supposed to start serving in October

So he spent too much time playing call of duty and think you can just sign up for the rangers?

Yeah, I have a feeling there's a lot more to this story, but it really doesn't matter at this point. Looking at the car, I'm surprised one of them came out alive.

FTA: Detective Fitzharris told Newsday that excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

That's some fine detective work there, Fitzharris.

At some point we're going to need a Carwin Award tag. Both for the car winning, and....well, you know....

I let a neighbor and friend of mine take a VERY short ride on my 1980 GS1000S Wes Cooley Suzuki. Figuring he had a SWEET Harley Soft Tail, and figuring he would be as careful with mine as he always was with his, I let him ride it up our small street. Dumbass me watched him dump the clutch in 3rd gear and was as close to losing the bike as you can! He was white as a ghost...You can't assume people respect the power of fast vehicles immediately!

Ha, I'll take that stooopid and raise ya. Had a new Evo Harley back in the day. Girlfriend at the time wanted to drive. Dumbass that I am said ok. She cranked the throttle and dropped the clutch. Luckily the rear wheel didn't catch and just spun like hell. Got ahold the clutch and said baby that's the last time that will happen.. Ever

Just sayin.

True as far as it goes, but there's this thing called subrogation - owner's insurance company can go after the kid's estate for whatever they pay out.  Could get ugly for everyone.

Not saying it has to do with anything, but...
