I cannot think of the time upon which I saw the person who spent too much on the car and thought to the self of me OH SELF PLEASE DO THE FILMING OF THIS. So perhaps he was the dumbass for many reasons but having the expectation of someone doing the filming of the crash of this is not the reason. I do however do the filming of sheep with the forceps. Oh no you do not wish for seeing the videos of these? Well I do not know what to say to you but perhaps you should have not the concern.

Why not just sell the Bugatti?

Now, if you had read the FIRST SENTENCE of TFA ...

... he was convicted this week of crashing a million-dollar Bugatti for the $2.2 million insurance policy he'd taken out.

1.  Take out policy worth double the value of the car
2.  ????? (actually, this time we have the answer, don't we?)
3.  Profit

Isn't that insurance fraud even if the crash is genuine?

I remember when this happened - in fact, the headline reminded me of it.

Whar FollowUp tag?

I just watched the Top Gear Episode with the Bugatti vs. the McLaren in Abu Dhabi (however it's spelled)

The McLaren was faster off the line, but the Bugatti beat it when they reached the finish line.

/The Veyron is so fast that Hammond beat the Stig.
//Some say he's too good for Fark
///and he's circumnavigated the globe faster than geostationary satellites

I wonder how often an insurance company actually pays off double. I bet they take a good hard look at those claims.

You can insure anything for any amount if the insurer agrees to it.  That's not fraud.  Maybe the adjuster assumed the value of the rare supercar was going to increase.

If I buy a Rembrandt at a yard sale for $3, am I not allowed it insure it for $4M? As long as the insurer agrees to insure it for a set amount, and you pay the appropriate premiums, there's nothing illegal about it.

I'm not sure what statute it would fall under, but i'm pretty sure of you intentionally destroy your property just to collect on the insurance, it's a crime.

IANAL, but at the very least your insurance policy probably doesn't cover that.

Why the hell do you think I haven't burned my house down yet?  I don't need the money but sometimes I feel like doing it just to spite the neighbors.

One of only 2 good things about living in a townhome attached to your neighbors townhomes.  If my home burns, so does yours.  Of course that cuts both ways and my next door neighbor smokes.  I make sure my insurance is paid up every year.

Standard car insurance policies only cover unintentional damage to your own car. In my state you can get a policy that pays out for all accidents or a cheaper policy that pays for accidents that are not your fault.

In many states the legally required car insurance policy does pay for damage to others that you cause intentionally while driving.

Sure. But with a typical auto insurance policy if you insure your 1 million dollar car for two million, the insurance company will say it was only worth $500k - sign her agreeing with us or we won't even send that check. You need an appraisal and insurance states the appraised value as the agreed value of the car if you want to be fully insured, otherwise you have to sue to have a chance at fair market from the insurance company.

It's a specific type of coverage called "agreed value" used in limited circumstances, essentially where items are rare or even one of a kind - basically where things aren't easy to replace.  Collectors items, paintings, etc.  Applies to things like classic cars as well.  There is a method to it, and in theory there are safeguards to prevent valuations so extreme as to make "accidents" more appealing to the insured than the item itself, but generally if you ain't rich, you can't get this kind of coverage.  No surprise the guy got caught here.

With a typical insurance company, no, that's not possible. But as the CNN article stated this is a "collector's" insurance policy for rare vehicles; that's why the greater valuation is allowed.

Ron Dennis (head of McLaren):

When we did the race in Abu Dhabi, we beat it off the line so many times that the film crew was getting frustrated because the outcome was supposed to be for the Bugatti to win.

So we had to do that whole thing about ten times before it managed to get off the line cleanly and catch us up. Because every time they dropped the clutch it bogged down and we were gone.
