Everyone's a critic, but really, it wasn't that good. Kind of a glorified Tosh 2.0 or a Ridiculousness without the...whatever it is Ridiculousness has going for it. I mean, I'm sorry Wil, but you're not Tosh.  You're not even Craig Kilborn. And you're not...well, you're not a lot of guys.
I wonder why they don't just give him a prime time sitcom of his own. Two Broke Wil Wheatons, or Two and a Half Wil Wheatons, or maybe they could actually come up with something new and original. How 'bout - he's an alien trying to make it in L.A. as a simple working girl.
Well, he should keep trying, anyway.
Loved him in the beginning of Sharknado 2.

I watched the first episode, but never bothered to watch it again.  It didn't help that whoever was producing it was doing a shiat job of tagging the new and rebroadcast episodes correctly, so my DVR would end up recording every instance regardless of whether it was new or not even though I had it set to only grab the new ones.

I never really cared for Tosh either.

The Chris Hardwick Nerdist show was decent, and I really liked Attack of the Show when it was on.  I think you really need an ensemble cast to do something like that right.

Well... f*ck SyFy.

Bastards have no idea what they are missing out on.

I hate SyFy, but also I didn't even know Wil had a show there.

He should do online stuff. Probably get better exposure that way.

He does have a show on Felicia Day's internet channel.

I watched a couple of episodes. I feel like I gave it an honest shot.

The writing wasn't very good. Lots of stale jokes. I am sure that Wil's presentation would have gotten better over time.

The show needed better writing to make it.

2014-08-29 11:59:45 PM
I liked it because I'm a massive nerd but objectively speaking, the writing wasn't that good and Wil felt a little out of place - I like the guy but he's not a comedian.

I'll be damned. Whil Wheaton had a talk show?

I tried, I failed and I didn't see the funny.  However; best wishes to Mr. Wheaton in the future.

OMG I loved him in "The Guild".

2014-08-30 01:01:57 AM
It was sort of up and down. Some of it was funny, some not. It got better towards the last few shows as he relaxed a little bit in the role. Better luck next time.

Defiance, otoh, I will be very sad if it gets the axe...

2014-08-30 01:16:12 AM
How about they bring back ALF - I mean, it's about time to, and they have no other ideas - and then make Wil the new Willie Tanner.

Half as many episodes as the Chevy Chase show. Ouch.

2014-08-30 01:41:27 AM
I never heard about it until now. And since I didn't see the show, I don't have an opinion. I read the article though, so I figured I'd post a comment, even though I know RTFA isn't a requirement.

Condolences on your show, Wil. Hopefully this is merely a speedbump on your road to adult-roles non-cameo stardom.

2014-08-30 01:43:34 AM
Never even knew he had a show. Sadly though, this is what TV has become, it's all about the bottom line and the almighty dollar.

I think the best thing that could happen to TV is for half of the current networks to go off the air. There's simply to much out there to watch and not enough viewers to go around. Most shows take a while to find their grove and get going, but these days if they don't attract massive viewership in the first six episodes it's canceled.

Another thing that would help is to get rid of the whole concept of broadcast TV. Peoples lives and schedules are vastly different now than they were 50 years ago but TV is still run like everyone still works 9-5 and has weekends off. The whole concept of prime time is antiquated. Go to an on demand system like you get with Netflix or Hulu and I guarantee shows will start getting more viewers.

It was a horrible trainwreck of a show*

* I never actually watched an episode.

What? They canceled Web Soup Wil Wheaton Project??

2014-08-30 01:56:02 AM
It was The Syfy Soup, not Tosh. and it was okay for a first season. Too bad.

2014-08-30 01:59:25 AM
For the record, I cannot stand Tosh. Much preferred Wil.

Yeah... but we weren't talking about Jimmy Fallon... and it doesn't seem to have hurt him much.

I expected the axe to fall sooner than it did, and I like Wil.

I think the show as written conceptually would be better online, versus on basic cable.  I did think Wil got better with practice, but every episode carried a whiff of desperation in it, too much visible caring if it was going over okay. The key to a show like this is a more devil-may-care attitude of "fark it, it was funny to me and if you don't get it, not my fault", which strangely enough, comes across as more sincere. As presented, it looked like it was supposed to be more or less conventional stand-up jokes with media commentary.  But it wasn't always stand-up- funny or monologue funny.  And the media commentary wasn't very piercing, let's say.

I also think that it was too generic and all-encompassing of fandoms, simultaneously,  and it got watered-down in effectiveness due to that.  More episodes devoted to just one theme might have helped.

I also found the stand-up presenter in front of a green screen format to be kind of played-out, and while it's obviously cheap to do, it lobbed TWWP into the same category as all those VH-1 "remember the whatever" clip shows, the Tosh show, Talk Soup... too crowded a field of shows with a similar look.    If this was a show with a roaming host reporting from real world locations, it would likely be too expensive for skiffy to do, ...but more interesting to watch. I would have liked to see the show done from various cons happening across the country, for example, or from various comic book or game stores, or authors/stars homes. Or just weird/offbeat/ SF-related real locations.

Keep trying, Wil.  A different execution of the same concepts could eventually hit the right mix of locations and elements and presentation.  There IS a place for a program like that in the viewer-space. Your game-playing show was pretty good.

2014-08-30 02:05:12 AM
Good. Talk shows are stupid, anyway. No big loss.

*sigh* Very much this. Ironically, his earnestness and passion for the genre is precisely what made it far less appealing. It was surreal and a tad cringe-worthy to see him so...uncomfortable on camera: The complete opposite of Chris Hardwicke.

That said, WW is a resilient Farker and *ahem* Wil bounce back in no time at all.

Not news, ugh: Syfy cancels show that ACTUALLY PERTAINS TO Sci-Fi in favor of likely more wrestling, ridiculously crappy movies, and reality TV.

Saw it was on, watched 5 minutes before "Oh, it's just another host makes joke, intros web video, comments on video, makes joke, intros web video, comments on video show" and then I never watched again.
