I like it. The dopamine anyway. Well in recent times I've only had one big dose of coffee in the morning out of times when I couldn't fall asleep when drinking coffee after noon. Sometimes I want to reconsider that when I feel all crashy and burny after work.

I did not watch the stupid video, but I guess the answer is no, because caffeine is a blocker? Once it has blocked all the brain receptors that are shaped like the opposite of caffeine's prongs then there are no more receptors to block? I think I read a book once. I am a dumbass.

I was guessing the answer to be "no" simply because the headline asked a yes/no question.

Is it possible to overdose on coffee?  No.  You would die of a condition called hyponatremia first, essentially where the electrolytes have been diluted and your synapses can no longer fire.

Is it possible to overdose on caffeine?  Absolutely.  Although, relatively speaking, caffeine has a high LD50, eating pure caffeine can kill in small doses; you'll probably die of an arrhythmia.

And I drink my coffee blacker than the blackest black, times infinity.

"The LD50 of caffeine in humans is dependent on individual sensitivity, but is estimated to be about 150 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass or roughly 80 to 100 cups of coffee for an average adult."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine#Overdose

So can you drink 80 to 100 cups quickly enough to build up enough toxicity from caffeine?

Doesn't seem likely to me but we are pretty good at finding ways to kill ourselves.

You can overdose on everything.

Oxygen, water, even sunlight.

Maybe they mean, can you get so much caffeine into your system...that it kills you by interacting with your biological system?

Does taking enough of it to choke to death count?

Wait, what does overdose mean?  Ah, so it has to be too much of a drug.  doesn't say how it has to interact or cause problems, just that problems occur.

I know some people that can't handle caffeine well at all.  Some it makes ill, some it could concievably give heart attacks to.

Those both fit the definition of overdose.

Maybe you can't overdose from those other things I mentioned, as they may not be drugs.

What is a drug?
Google tells me:
a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

Well, water and air count.

Does sunlight?

I bet you could force it, the only difficult part is "into the body".

If you went 24/7 enough weeks in a row with direct sunlight to your innards, it would kill you.

Surely, even into your mouth you'd have a physiological effect eventually.  There's no real time frame to speak of.

So I'll stick with, yeah, you can overdose on them.  You can overdose on everything.

Playing fast and loose, that even things that don't react with you chemically can still suffocate, crush, or do other bad things.

*sigh*
Now I have to look up "physiological" just to be sure.

My theory appears to hold water.

/and that wasn't a caffeine induced speed ramble either.

Define "overdose".

You can definitely get so much caffeine in so short of a time that it causes very bad effects.

Will you die from it?

I DNRTFA, but I think only if you get so much that you have a heart attack, but I don't eat at KFC and McDonald's everyday so I wouldn't know.

doesn't work that way unfortunately

i have loved caffeine my entire life. two weeks ago i had an incredibly strong pot my buddies wife made, drank 4 16oz mugs of it while working stressful office b.s.

bam, 2-day arrhythmia.

the clinic I went to hooked me up to an ECG and it was crazy, like pauses every 3 beats and then a PVC that spiked off the board. they sent me to the ER against my wishes insisting i see a cardiologist. the er doc asked me like 4 times if i had been using crack because that's the only time he'd seen an arrhythmia that intense.

and now i get weird feeling when i drink any caffeine at all :(
so, heed my words of caution. you'll actually give yourself a sensitivity to it before you build up a resistance.

For as much song and dance that Starbucks does about "only arabica!!!"never robusta!!!" There is no way that Starbucks has more caffeine than Dunkin Donuts without Robusta. Don't swallow the hype! Enjoy Robusta with all its espressolike bitterness and real coffee flavor. Why do you think everyone enjoys Vietnamese coffee? Robusta.

FTFA, you cannot OD death on coffee per se. You couldn't possibly drink that much. Now, pure caffeine in tablet form like in no-doz, well maybe. Also, read upthread about farker who got arrhythmia from 64 ounces of coffee.

I have actually made coffee with caffeinated water. This was on a day when I needed to drive a van for a field trip, but had taken some decongestant for a cold and was afraid I would get sleepy behind the wheel. On the contrary, the decongestant made me wired... I was hyper and felt like my heart would pound out of my chest. Never again.

First rule of poisoning:  It is possible for ANYTHING to be toxic in large enough quantities. Water, oxygen, tobacco, caffeine, milk, aspirin... Doesn't matter. There's a "too much for the human body" point for EVERYTHING.

It's just that for some things, that "too much" point where it becomes toxic is extraordinarily high.

Well, if you really like caffeine, you can buy the pure stuff on the Internet. I've got 100g sitting in a drawer, the LD50 is 10g IIRC. Tried IVing it once, ONCE.

Why do so many people seem to think that "overdose" means "die from overdose"? Everyone who drinks it eventually ODs on coffee, but a few muscle tremors and heart palpitations isn't a big deal for most people, unless it's every damn day.

Occasionally, someone with heart problems even dies from an overdose. Sucks, but anything can kill you if you're already broken.

I got into it above too, but apparently it takes too much time to think about the question intelligently, or even read someone else who has.  It's a trend I find highly disturbing on fark, a thread where a majority of the posts are simply meaningless stories and zero interaction with others, not even any sort of meaningful information.
I think fark has been flooded with people who, as a figurative phrase, like the sound of their own voice.

the exact amount is determined by many factors, but ~5 to 10 grams of caffeine taken orally is considered lethal.

wanna' know why caffeine producing plants create caffeine?? it's a great insecticide and helps the plant defend itself.  same thing with Nicotine producing plants.

plants are smart.   people not so much.
