And when the Star Spangled Banner plays, you're gonna want to stand for that, also. Just FYI.

My Grandfather was a hard core Christ of Christ guy...and a WWI vet.
When they added "Under God" to the pledge he wouldn't say it those words...because it invoked gods name with a 'graven image'.
He also had a problem with public prayer outside of church...citing Mathew 6. and Jesus' words about not praying in public

I pledge allegiance, to a rag, that's been placed far above what it stands for

I love my country but don't need to recite some government approved pledge to prove it. The whole idea, even the name, sounds unamerican.

When did we lose our way that we gave up individual rights for the collective, be it adherence to the doctrines of the Orwellian sounding Homeland Security or communist sounding Social Security scheme?

Thank goodness for Rand Paul.

Who's with me?

My kind of Christian.  Not that graven image, cause I like art and a lapsed Catholic.  But not forcing your beliefs on other people.

Good on him.

Didn't stand for the pledge and a prayer? Sounds like he wasn't making the country of USA his god. Big deal. Not like USA did anything useful for its citizens...

Maybe. I also see a whole bunch of people attending those meetings now for the sole purpose of sitting during the pledge.

If I am ordered to leave (or forbidden to enter) this meeting, I ask that you advise me of the statutory authority for your action. Otherwise, I must insist on my right to attend this meeting. "

wademh: I miss being outraged at pig ignorant stupidity from people in authority.

I figure that everyone gets about 10 years to be outraged by this type of thing, and then they just have to accept that the world is full of petty, ignorant jerks.

The alternatives are that you spend your whole life howling with rage about something that will never change, or you spend your whole life somehow unaware that most of humanity is made up small minded authoritarian jackasses who need a good cockpunching.

This thread will be filled with plenty of examples of both types of people : the screaming rageholes, and the authoritarian bootlickers.

Loyalty Oath, did he recite the Loyalty Oath? Because we may need to burn him at the stake.

Steve Cash had a lot to say about pledges and loyalty oaths a while back, some are for the country, others are for the state, soon we will have some for our companies and sponsors. Start em young too, get it in their brain where their loyalties belong. Company before state, state before country, country somewhere in the back, god before all.

Or else?

Yep, i can't wait till next month when all the videos show up. Of course by then the commission will probably have made the meetings closed door, if possible.

What's the point of reciting a pledge if you don't even understand what it truly means?

So much for the "liberty and justice for all" bit. Just toss that out the window I suppose.

I am against standing for "God Bless America" at baseball games.  They shouldn't even sing it.  Some people treat it just like the anthem, and give you dirty looks if you don't stand.

You're not really stupid enough to believe that our rights are contingent on a loyalty oath, are you?

I'm a member of a fraternal organization who includes the Pledge when opening meetings. One of our officers insists on reciting "liberty and justice for most". I've never asked him why. Perhaps I will.

And to believe that somehow reciting such an oath in any way proves anything.  Like a cold-war soviet agent would spontaneously catch fire if he were to recite the oath.

"Ah ha!   See!  THIS is why we have loyalty oaths!"

Don't get me started on how forcing children who have no concept of the term "allegiance" to pledge such only fosters an ability to lie about other things in the future.

"That which you called Ee'd Plebnista was not written for chiefs or kings or warriors or the rich and powerful, but for all the people! Down the centuries, you have slurred the meaning of the words 'We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity... do ordain and establish this constitution'. These words and the words that follow were not written only for the Yangs, - but for the Kohms as well! [...]They must apply to everyone or they mean nothing! Do you understand?"

Honest question here.  Do you feel people have a responsibility to recite the Pledge of Allegiance?

Follow up question.  If yes, does the rote recitation of the pledge indicate someones true beliefs?

diaphoresis: The mayor exercised his right, so what's with all the brouhaha ?

The mayor doesn't have a right to order people to stand or force them to leave the meeting if they don't.  The police cheief should have refused to remove the guy.  It's clearly illegal.

In my experience, by the time the public meeting is held the decision has already been made.  All they have to do is to formally vote on it and write it down.  Formally having the public meeting is just windowdressing to meet the letter of the law, if a jurisdiction has an open meeting law, so long as the body making the decision is sufficiently small that everyone personally knows everyone else and knows how they'll come down on any particular issue.

I've seen first-hand public meetings when someone threw a wrench in the works on a particular agenda item, they simply tabled that item until the next meeting after stating that they needed time to consider the merits brought up in public comment.  They still voted the way they wanted to next meeting though.
