Having worked for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, I can tell you that the manatee status is necessary because people there are farking assholes who will behave any destructive way they can with their surroundings, and if it weren't for the protections the manatee have, a lot of other sensitive flora and fauna would also be affected.  Many of these aren't nearly as cute as the manatee, so they don't get the same publicity.

And the businesses will always want more rights over the water.  You have businesses bringing in sand and dumping it in lakes to give their customers a "sandy beach" feel.  The sand that then, over time and with dozens of other idiots doing the same farking thing, fills in the lake, until you HAVE no lake.  They want the rights to do more stupid things to make a quick buck.

Removal of environmental regulations should be tempered with wisdom and experience, and not pushed because of corporate interest.

They're best when dipped in batter and deep fried whole.

I'm sure if they remove the manatees from the endangered species list the actions of your average floridan will quickly get them placed back on it

Sea Cow -- it's the cow of the sea. The fat flabby fishy cow of the sea.

I recommend sticking to land mammals. We don't seem to have much luck with sea mammals.

Aborigines are allowed to eat them in Australia.

But white people aren't allowed to eat them in Australia.

Except they are called Dugongs, not Manatees. Same order, different family.

I just found out a relative of the Manatee was the LARGEST non-whale mammal from recent history.

But 27 years after it was discovered by Europeans it was extinct. Struth! YOUR MOMMA!

Go ahead and admit it, you want, no you need some deep fried Dugong.

McDugong Sandwich.  Not a great name, but they are big enough critters to cut some nice square filets from, let's do the math.......done.  Ok, next month, the McMermaid sandwich.

Nobody wants to eat a mermaid.  Really, my friend?  The logo will be the bronze statue from Copenhagen.  With Golden Arches.

WTF?  Really?  These animals deserve special treatment, blah, blah, blah, here I go, expecting rational responses on Fark.  It really did take some very lonely sailors to see this critter and think "Mermaid."  Really.  One of the ugliest animals around, but a sailor would still hit it.

Thing is, if we followed wisdom and experience, we would all agree that the EPA and such have too  little power, that the environment needs  more protection, and these guys are assholes. Yet somehow it isn't going that way - the grey wolf was delisted because farking conservatards in Idaho hated them, big ag has gotten worse and worse about dumping shiat and fertilizer in the lakes and rivers, so much that Lake Erie is a shiathole again, etc. And rightwingers are sitting there saying the EPA should be disbanded.

Wisdom has no place in our culture. Sorry. I know it's shiat, everyone who knows anything about the environment knows it's shiat, but that's the way our culture works. The basis of our culture is development and exploitation. Nature does not count, it does not get a seat at the table, it does not matter.

To be fair, they were pretty isolated by that time anyway. Evidence suggests they were widespread, but then got eaten by the natives on the coasts of Asia and North America until they were isolated on that one island where the Europeans finished them off. So, really, more of the same, like what happened to giant sloths and mammoths and stuff. They just got a temporary reprieve.
