So you're telling me there are secret letters from Rob Schneider to the CDC about the autism links?

That's nice.  They might carry more weight if they were from Rob Ford.

I trust him about as much as I trust Jenny McCarthy, which is to say not at all.

One disturbing disclosure, AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN were and still are THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY PERCENT more likely to develop Autism under the current Vaccine MMR schedule," Schneider wrote. "This according to the original CDC study in 2001."

The agency said in a statement that the study's results were due to issues with the sample and not a vaccine-autism link.

Aka.. the study was in general about children in Georgia and they had a few children who happened to be black in the study sample but not enough to be statistically significant.

basic statistics is hard

Vaccines are one of the most wonderful discoveries of the modern era. I think everyone should avail themselves of vaccines. However, I don't see why one should be FORCED to be vaccinated.

In many ways, it's a self correcting problem. Don't get vaccinated, suffer the consequences, fail to reproduce.

I've heard the herd argument-- that if one person doesn't get vaccinated then everyone is vulnerable. Well, then those people should get vaccinated if they want to be protected. Why should the state force one person to do something to their body for the benefit of the collective?  I understand quarantine during an epidemic, but vaccines are preventative. Failure to get vaccinated does not equate to always getting the disease.

And I understand that vaccines are not 100% effective, so some innocent people who do get vaccinated might sill get sick if others do not.

But I'd much rather live in a world where people can make their own choices about what to do with their bodies rather than have some bureaucrat tell them what to do.

Who's with me?

And

To his credit, anti-depressants ARE being pushed through way too easily. Anything with a side effect that is basically "may take your existing condition and make it 10x worse" should never be approved by the FDA.

I'm quite impressed that he knows that CAPITALIZING CERTAIN WORDS AND PHRASES is bound to STRENGTHEN your argument by the TIME-TESTED TENETS of rhetoric and logic by UP TO FIFTEEN TIMES (provided, of course, you understand that the phrase "up to" also includes the value "naught").

if you really want to protect the health of innocent kids mandate what parents are allowed to feed their kids. The biggest health problem among American youth is their chubby little bellies, not people dropping dead because a handful of loners don't want to get vaccinated.

But we'd never do that because we don't live in an authoritarian state.

Yet.

But Obama and his unelected wife (who for some reason thinks she has the authority to tell kids what to eat) would love to order you what to feed your kids.

The republicans, of course, are just as dictatorial. If it were up to them a woman could never get an abortion and a man could never give another man a handjob.

Way to paint in broad strokes..... An easy compromise can simply be to stagger out the vaccines over a period of time, rather than pump up the kids with 50 shots in one sitting.

You're still free to do whatever you want with your body. The rest of society is free to tell you to take some basic preventative health precautions if you want to join that society. If you don't want to do that, you're free to fark off.

I can see where your questions come from and they are good questions.  Here are the answers.

1) People under the age of 12 months are more vulnerable to contracting these illnesses due to not being vaccinated yet and, even when vaccinated, not developing immunity after the first or second shot.  So, someone not vaccinated for whooping cough may contract whooping cough at age 5.  He will cough for 3 months but otherwise be ok.  In those 3 months, he could infect dozens of others including these babies who could easily die from this infection.  This applies to many of the vaccines we give- measles, pneumococcal, hib.

2) There are a small number of people who never develop immunity despite being fully vaccinated (less than 1%) and those people will contract these infections through no fault of their own.

3) Everyone did get their own choice in the fifties.  With thousands of people dying from measles and being paralyzed from polio, society made a collective choice to screw the individual who says "you can tell me what to do" and tell them what to do.

4) If mandatory vaccination was bagged, within 5 years it would be back as the horrors of an unvaccinated society would lead to a collective demand that all these illnesses and deaths be stopped.

thank you for actually reading the entirety of my post and the sensible response.

I still prefer to not grant to government the authority to compel me to preemptively do something to my body, but agree you have sound arguments. I believe though that on the balance the danger of authoritarian government outweighs the danger of a small number of people getting sick. (I disagree with your last point because I think most people today understand the value of vaccinations. As you point out, the innocent population that is vulnerable is quite small.)

People should get vaccinated or suffer the consequences. Just as they should quit smoking, have regular sleep habits, eat lots of green veggies, and avoid stress. But we shouldn't surrender our liberty to have big brother force us to live healthy.

Now who's with me?
