To be fair, there are people who actually do a really good job at homeschooling.  Being homeschooled by someone with a Ph.D. in biochemistry devoting their full energy to your education is quite different from being homeschooled by a barely literate high school dropout.

Stories like this are just more proof of why atheists should be working to set the various sects of christianity against each other as much as possible in addition to working to remove religion from the government and schools.

You guys are a tough crowd. All the homeschooling families I've known have been surprisingly normal. The one I have the most contact with is part of a co-op and follows a developed curriculum. I'm glad the option exists for those who need/want it.

On the other hand, I know a family who is quiverfull (but in public school!) and they have been slowly isolating themselves from their friends and family. You have to be careful which topics you talk about or they will explain to you why you are sinning and cut you off. It's creepy as all get out.

Farris' article is basically the same as a speech he gave to the leaders' forum at the Florida homeschool convention back in the end of May. Well, except that he dropped the part where he claimed that patriarchy turned kids into open homosexuals and atheists. I assume he dropped that bit from the published version because I and another blogger called him on it, he tends to be reactionary that way. It's tons of fun though to be in the room when someone like Farris proclaims that your parents turned you gay because patriarchy.

Better than the cognitive dissonance that homeschool kids will experience when "Jesus" isn't a multiple choice answer for every question on the SAT.

I'm sorry you feel that your faith and personal morals aren't strong enough to stand up against the science that your children will learn in school, but this is a society. We need to have adults who can read more than the bible and a seed catalogue.

Hey, to be fair, I have a friend who was homeschooled and she's now working on a Ph.D. (at a public university, not a degree mill or religious school). Of course, she was raised strictly Christian and now wants nothing at all to do with religion.

Fark is the source of that photo.  I don't remember what the story was that the thread was based on but a farker posted that photo,  of his wife,  to show us that home schooled people can be normal and attractive.  Then people started commenting on / making fun of her teeth,  since they seem to be glowing for some reason, and now she is referred to during home schooling or teeth related articles.

I have a shiatty memory so I'm sure someone else can explain this better than I but that's the gist of it.

Why are their so many people on hear who dissagree with being taught at home?

2014-08-29 09:58:12 PM
The thing that's super frustrating to me is that Farris is the problem. He teaches patriarchy, he teaches quiverfull ideology, the first time I ever heard quiverfull ideology was from Farris at a speech I got dragged to by my parents. I was 12. Twelve years old and hearing the message loud and clear that my worth was really based on the number of children I gave birth to and homeschooled.

The reason that there is virtually no regulation in most states and parents are able to avoid teaching their daughters anything but cooking, cleaning, and sewing is because Farris fought against any and all regulations to ensure that children have a basic education.

Farris thinks he can write an article condemning a strawman version of patriarchy and it'll somehow magically make everyone forget that he's one of the biggest patriarchy proponents there is. He teaches that wives have to submit to their husbands, that daughters have to submit to their fathers, and that parents should be raising an army of children to take over government. Oh, and he's virulently anti-gay, believes that Lawrence v. Texas should be overturned, and the only real reason he thinks that the patriarchy people should loosen up is because the backlash is why their kids are gay, feminists, and atheists. If we were all straight, patriarchal fundamentalists who are homeschooling our dozen children, I don't know if he'd have said anything.

Maybe internationally but muslims are insignificant in this country and are likely to always be so. It's the catholics and evangelicals that are most responsible for the misogyny bigotry and anti-intellectualism that are rampant in the flyover states and the south.
