Why is it such a political hot potato with these guys?
Just farking take them out.
Nuke them until they glow.
And take any DNA associated with them out, too.
Leave no one that can play revenge.

Well, as soon as you identify who "they" are, make sure to tell the US military.  They're a bunch of cowards that hide behind women and children.  They hide their weapons in schools, hospitals, and churches, and operate in countries that we're not so friendly with.  Makes it a bit tricky.  Unless of course you're proposing genocide on a massive scale.   In that case, it'd be pretty easy.

Actually, biological warfare IS something to be worried about.  There has been credible evidence of development of such attacks.

One such attack that could cause quite a bit of damage in the US is smallpox, as not many people get that vaccine.  I only have it because of military deployments.  Take a look at your shoulders and if you don't have a circular scar, you don't have the vaccine.

One carrier intentionally infected with it could cause quite a bit of havoc if they were released into the general population, especially in a densely populated area.  It would also be rather hard to find the person of origin.

Smallpox is not a great weapon because it can be defeated by quarantine. It is spread by close contact and there are few or no asymptomatic carriers.

Over 99% of people infected with polio do not show symptoms, but that rate is too high to make it a good weapon. The disease is also too slow to be effective as a terror weapon.

Plague is actually a decent starting point because it is moderately deadly and has insect vectors and animal hosts. It's just not deadly enough to sustain an outbreak in a country like America, where people can be treated and isolated.

If we're going to have terrorists, I'd prefer that they be retarded and commit feckless acts.

These idiots should be exterminated wherever they're found, by whoever finds them first. Including people of their own faith.

Of course not. It's called the bubonic plague because it causes little boobs full of fluid to grow on your body in places like your armpits.

Weaponizing biologicals is really hard to do. Sure if they got ahold of something (which they haven't) they could sloppily infect a few people - maybe. They could also rent a car from Hertz and run over people at a farmers market. Do we have to spend billions fussing over this?

Lady Beryl Ersatz-Wendigo: Can mosquitos carry the bubonic plague?  I don't have a lot of run-ins with fleas.

Yeah, but its way harder to catch it that way. Maybe our new best buddies, the Asian Tiger mosquito could help... They get scared easily, so they don't always complete their feeding on one person, so they might move on to some one else.

But in a country like Syria or Iraq it could probably spread pretty quickly, and so maybe the terrorists will kill all of their own families pretty quickly. They may not have thought their cunning plan all the way through...

I really doubt that.  It is not big and boomy.  It does not have the 'umph' of a beheading.  Lastly, it can very likely cause everyone else to not like you all of a sudden (and justify the glass parking lot scenario)

They would be more prudent to become US citizens, rally and organize to have senior citizens not required to take tests to retain driver licenses - then open up Old Country Buffet franchises and constantly change the time frame for the early bird special.

There are a lot of variables involved in an attempt to weaponize a disease like the plague.

For starters, which plague? The disease comes in variants like any disease, notably influenza which produced a new variant or three every year and can sometimes catch scientists out by surprising them. They have to come up with vaccines about a year ahead of the flu season, so they can second guess the disease wrong and we have a bad year. The disease can also mutate at any time, become more virulent. Many papers are written each year and published in scientific journals, then read by the people who make decisions like which vaccines to include in the flu shots for this year's flu season.

Many other factors which affect the effectiveness of the plague as a weapon is who you expose to it, when and where and how, and also where the disease attacks. The plague can infect you through the skin (which is less likely to be fatal) or the lungs (the respiratory disease spreads easier and is more deadly).

One of the confusing thing about the plagues of history is that comtemporaries seem to be discribing more than one disease--this is partly because the plague is a different creature depending on how you are exposed and also because there are many diseases that have been called plagues besides the infamous Yersina pestis.

The bubonic plague sounds scary but like Sideshow Bob's choice of a retro nuclear bomb to nuke Springfield, it might not work as well as something far more mundane like food poisoning or the flu.

In all likelihood, a terrorist attack with the plague would work best in a place like India where rats are plentiful and people are poor and closely packed. The medical facilities would be easy to over-load and deaths would be extremely numerous. Mind you, there are outbreaks of the plague in India all of the time. Some of them are in sync with the bamboo flowering because certain species of bamboo only flower once every 17 years (or other odd-numbered periods) and when they do they produce enormous amounts of bamboo fruit to feed a boom in the rat population--which then starves and runs around looking for more food when the bamboo runs out.  Earthquakes and other natural disasters can put the rats on the run, which brings them into contact with humans.

In the US, the plague is endemic in the South West. There is a reservoir for the plague in the armidillo population. You don't need illegals crossing the border form Mexico--the plague is at home in the USA. In fact, very few illegals have the plague and fewer Americans catch it from illegals than catch it from local wildlife.

Most people can survive the plague nowadays because of modern medical science and the fact that disease seems to be far less deadly than it was. Evoltution favours diseases that spread without killing their "vectors" too soon, so diseases tend to become milder.

Of course, talk of the plague is another thing. It's got a great reputation and panics people. Diarrhea, which kills 2.5 million children a year, just leads to bad jokes, even though it can be prevented or treated for mere pennies by adding a bit of salt and sugar to water and rehydrating victims.

This shows that ISIS has an imagination and thinks about how to operationalize their ideas. While the threat itself is pretty baseless, the fact that they're going through the thought process is bad news.

They seem a lot more centralized and focused than AlQ, so they probably won't have little splinter cells doing their own thing.

Prairie dogs do get infected but typically die too quickly to be an effective reservior.  Rock Squirrels, Ground squirrels and Chipmunks in the southwest are a reservior for plague.   http://extension.entm.purdue.edu/publichealth/diseases/flea/plague.ht m l

I don't know why AQ, ISIS and other idiots just don't go to Africa, catch the ebola then go somewhere very Christian or very Jewish or very Shia and very populated to die.

I'm currently reading The Second World War, which is long as hell but really interesting, and I just yesterday learned the Germans flooded part of Sicily or some Italian city then planted malaria carrying mosquitoes to infect the Italians for surrendering.  They even destroyed all the quinine used to treat it.  I think 50,000 people were infected.  Old school chemical warfare.

I'm reading The Deserters. Fascinating book--but kind of dull considering the subject is WWII--about the failures of American replacements and Allied supply security. Oh and deserters too.

Apparently the Germans were much better behaved than some of the Americans.
