We just returned from a vacation in Seattle and we did a whale sighting cruise the day before we left. The number of whales in the Sound around the Canadian border was fantastic. You're supposed to give them a wide berth, but several whales surfaced around 50 yards from our ship. Leaping from the water. Rolling around. It was odd to have to flee from them, but we did. After awhile they were just little whale-like dots but we'd gotten an eye-full.

I have never understood the fascination with whales. Anytime one is sighted in Puget Sound, it is headline news and the top story on local television stations.

And usually it's some male without a pod of his own, sidling up to unattached lady whales and saying "Hey Baby, Juan de Fuca?".

I read that as "transparent orcas" at first, and was intrigued.

This is far less exciting than what was in my head.

Now all they have to do is learn to walk on their tail fins.
