Just the swiss guard. And they are not to be underestimated by anyone. Do not think for a moment that the current pope wouldnt relish becoming a Martyr against radical islam. He's probably the most laid back pope we have seen in history, but he is not afraid of getting his hands dirty.

About 100,000 divisions if you arm all the Catholics.

They are, and the Pope is directly responsible with his ceaseless bigotry and invective against Islam.  And if Catholics would stop beheading Muslim children, it would really help defuse the situation.

And yet this Pope likes to hobnob with the general public.  It must drive his security team nuts.

I kind of doubt they'll succeed in killing him though.

They just raised the terror alert in Britain too.

RE: How many divisions does The Pope have?

This is actually a lazy paraphrase of a quote from Joseph Stalin, who after a scolding from The Pope, famously said,

"fark the Pope. How many divisions does he have, anyway?""

I guess Popes would be up there on the "want to kill" list, since nearly all assassins are hapless losers just trying to get attention. Shooting the Pope definitely would get you the cover of Time. But JP II's the only one I can think of that anyone's even TRIED to kill.

The Pope called for world intervention against ISIS.

I'm not sure what that idiot thought would happen except for his assassination and another oil war in the Middle East.

Where's that Ann Coulter when you need her to whip up another religious war?

We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.

Oh...don't stop...I'm almost there, Ann...

Given all the poor Catholics in the world, how hard would it be to whip a bunch of their angry young men into shape to be modern Crusaders and send them over to take on ISIS?

I'm with ya, bro.  At this summer's parish picnic, the line at the "behead a muslim child" booth was so long that I didn't even bother.

But the mackerel was excellent this year, so there's that.

In today's day and age, I don't think that would ever happen.  Even if the Pope is willing to say that ISIS should be combated against to protect innocents, I think that will only ever be a message to governments to use their military.

The fact is that the Papacy doesn't have that much real political power anymore.

Am I the only one who isn't freaking out about ISIS? They're trying to form an Islamic  state. States are good. States require stability to govern, and generally try to keep their people under control. States also have assets that can be targeted if they behave badly.

State-less institutions are the really dangerous ones.

Anyway, the pope will just use his pope magic to protect himself.

They are the same.  Also just IS, or the Islamic State

ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
ISIL, Islamic State of Iraw and the Levant (same land except slightly larger)

Italy's leading Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that at least 50 Italians are now known to be fighting with ISIS, pointing out that 80 percent are "very Italian" and only 20 percent are sons of immigrants

Yes, we're all familiar with men like like Mario al'Pasta.
It's really a joke to see the lengths white people will go to to protect these "youths".
Especially after the whole "Police didn't want to seem racist and take action against the 1400 white girls groomed by Asian gangs" thing in the UK.

I would take ISIS threats a little more seriously when they are doing stuff like this on a regular basis.  Granted geography is probably providing plenty of protection from them for the time being.

Warning: Graphic images.
ISIS executes 250 captured Syrian soldiers in mass execution

Yeah, and Christians shot all the U.S. presidents who were assassinated. The guy who shot JP II was a Turkish ultra-nationalist affiliated with a fascist party. His co-conspirators were Bulgarians. Nobody knows why they shot the Pope, but it problem wasn't over religion so much as politics. The shooter has claimed everyone from the KGB to Ayatollah Khomeini commissioned the hit. He's also claimed to have converted to Christianity in prison. Turkish prison, so hardcore.

I'm sure Francis is shaking in his shoes. Not.

This would really piss the world off, though - even non-Catholic countries and individuals would be blinking for a moment, then thinking "Ah hell no. If they got ol Frank, nobody's safe!" and then ISIS would be wiped off the earth with no compunction. Because in the scheme of things, despite the obvious religious factor and the opinions that go with it, the pop is generally considered neutral in international politics; he has no Army, after all, and the Vatican doesn't have the power it had in centuries past.

The pope is a really stupid target for them.

//are those masked murderers really THAT stupid?
/stay tuned, I guess

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and Islamic State (IS) are all names used at various times by the same group. They're Sunni ultra-fanatics who make the Taliban and Al Qaeda seem like paragons of ecumenical tolerance.

Well, if you or yours end up as a POW and beheaded by a terrorist on viral video, maybe you'll change your opinion about men of peace who encourage others to fight and die for them.

Sort of like being a meat-eater that looks down on vegans but doesn't slaughter his own meat because it's gross and messy and dangerous.

Well if you could get 10% of Roman Catholics on board with the plan that's one hundred million people people for a military conflict. With that many people you could just move them all to Iraq and simply overwhelm Isis with demographics.
