ANyone else in Michigan know where the fark Western Michigan State U is? I've lived here my whole life, and never heard of it... there Wester Michigan U, and Michigan State U, but never heard of WMSU.

With my luck, I'd attach it to some load-bearing wall and the vibrations would shake my house apart. Whoops.

On Tuesday, Jones was making final adjustments to the space-saving 24 by 36-inch speaker -- just under 2 inches in width

Err, wouldn't that be 2 inches in DEPTH, or maybe THICKNESS?

Designed a speaker my ass. He made a picture frame in shop class (Vo-tech) to hang a pre-made, flat panel speaker. He didn't exactly invent acoustic transduction.

It handles 300 watts? So what? The amount of wattage a speaker can "handle", has very little to do with it's efficiency. I've worked with speakers that needed to see 200 watts, before you could even hear a whisper. I've also worked with compression tweeters, running at 100 watts, that would damn near make your ears bleed. It's "sensitivity" that's relevent to efficiency, not "power handling".

If flat panel speakers were more efficient, and sounded better, you'd see them used alot more often, as the pro sound industry would save millions in transport and set up costs each year.

This kid is Gilligan, not The Professor.

All mid-range and treble!

Where's the bass?

300 W? RMS or Pimpo?

Hell, put a big enough voice coil on anything and you can get it to resonate sounds. Didn't RTFA but even back in the 70's you could go to *shudder* Radio Shack and buy a 1 inch thick flat polystyrene speaker. Given the car audio standards at the time, it didn't sound too bad if you kept the volume below, say, Alice Cooper.

Speakers so loud they blow women's clothes off.

To get the parts he needed to build the speaker, Jones drew them with AutoCAD (computer aided design) software

yep, anyone still using AutoCAD these days for a project like that is definitely Gilligan. And i bet he paid for his copy, too (has anyone ever paid for a copy of AutoCAD?).

Oh pshaw - my friend John (and his supervisor) patented a micromembrane for sound sensing and actuating, years ago. Put in array it can be as large as you want it. And it's made in a CMOS process, so its built in to its circuitry. See here (pops).

This thin-speaker thing has been around for a while.

Before everyone starts ripping on the guy, he is a CHILD. He has done something interesting in his young life that some of you can only mock because you wished you were more like him.

Thats right, I said it.

Well Tommy... Even if its not efficient as you say its far better than what I've done in highschool. I'm impressed.

delts, you are compassionate and right. but how the fark does this in-the-real-world-nonaccomplishment warrant a whole article in the Lenawee Connection?

Don, he was refering to the mistake, it is called Western Michigan University, not Western Michigan State University. - As we michiganders call it.

But, here's an interesting tidbit, Michigan State has some of it's campuses on the campus of Western Michigan University. Like most of the medical studies from MSU are done in K-Zoo. (no we don't call it kazoo, that's just stupid)

What is really sad is that The Adrian Telegram can't afford to hire someone decent to produce their website. What a piece of crap! Lenewee county Michigan SUCKS! For a newspaper with over 15,000 circulation, you'd think they'd want to attract customers, not scare them away.

lenconnect sux! they should never, ever be on fark again, i don't care if they clone a human at the Lenewee Vo-Tech, link to something decent. Hell, even hillsdale, MI has a decent site.

Feh. When I was in H.S., I designed a 5 foot 9 inch, 5 inch thick, battery powered woman I could hang on my wall.

Of course, my father wanted to know what in the hell I was doing with a blow up doll on my wall ...

Yeah, its cool that this teenager made a flat speaker in shop, whatever. Not gonna dis him, but is this news?

In every one of these, wonderkid makes wonderthing stories, it is the parents that do the real work. Without mommy or daddy being educated, wonderkid would be doing nothing more than making doodles and daydreaming during study hall.

Wow. If I had known you could magically make things by drawing them in AutoCAD, I would have manifested myself my own space shuttle with missiles and doom lasers by now.

He invented this before the speaker of course.

"three-feet wide", moron.

2004-02-19 01:29:13 AM
My first audio amp I built was damn loud, but it sounded like crap, nasty hum distortion. This article doesn't mention if the thing is any good nor does it give any specs other than wattage which is bs. From the flat panel speakers I've heard they all suck, but they were all those cheap computer ones. I think there are some high end flat panels, but I've never heard them.

2004-02-19 01:31:26 AM
One of my friends' brother goes there and sent me a .wav file of the speaker's performance - it actually sounds better than my own speakers.

2004-02-19 01:32:12 AM
You don't sing that dumb song do you?

A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-I-I-I-I-I I have a girl, in Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo-zoo).

2004-02-19 01:33:13 AM
You can't send any audio recording of a speaker's performance. The whole concept of hearing the way a speaker sounds requires being in its presence. DUMBASS!

With all due respect, that's probably the dumbest thing I've heard all day. How can you say his speakers sounded better than yours, when you're listening to them on your speakers?

2004-02-19 01:36:17 AM
Ok! Sheesh! I'll send the .wav file back then

Palmer said the class is being canceled due to low enrollment numbers, although several of his students have gone on to successful college careers. Vo-Tech Principal Larry Schroeder praised the class but acknowledged that after three years of trying to build enrollment, "it never really took off."
Did no one else read far enough to see that the class in which the student invented this radically different speaker design has been cancelled? Due to lack of interest? How farking pathetic...ignorant, lazy, know-nothing, jerks.....

2004-02-19 01:41:36 AM
Because every morning I wake up, and realize that I have a sense of humor that others will never experience.
