I was wondering about how fast I'd have to drink the beverage before napping. I'm impressed that the article addresses that. You have to drink it fast, so no piping hot coffee or those revolting coffe-ish flavored milkshakes from Starbucks.

Coffee doesn't really do the trick for me anymore. If I need to sleep I sleep even after having a cup or two or three of coffee.

I read this same advice some time back. It works great, assuming you are the kind of person that can get to sleep in time to make a 20-30 min nap feasible.

I don't nap anymore. I obviously can't during the day, mainly because I'm a tax paying adult, and if I take a nap in the evening, it ruins my night and I can't get to sleep until after 1am.

The best solution for me is the gym. 26 minutes and all. If you've only got 20 minutes and no time for a shower, do a few pushups, squats and/or crunches. It sucks and is not even remotely fun like a nap would be, but so does life.

FTA: researchers at Loughborough University

Which I first read as,
"Lamborghini University" and wondered why I had not been informed of such a place.

/I probably need coffee and a nap
//because a ride in a Lamborghini is clearly not going to happen

Not quite. You don't have to fall completely asleep for it to work and, apparently, if you shouldn't nap longer than 20 minutes.

I'm going to have to try this.

True, but personally if I don't at least doze it isn't that helpful.

Expect funny questions though. "Hey honey, going to take a nap". "Why are you drinking a cup of coffee on the way"?

That's like telling my wife "Ask me 500 questions"

I LOVE THIS STUDY!!

I've been telling people that this works because since caffeine is a "stimulant", it makes you sleep faster.

I'll give it a pass that most people wouldn't know much about the pharmacology of competitive inhibition for receptor activation/antagonism...
But isn't it common sense that 15-20 minute naps are good, and coffee takes 15-20 minutes to kick in... so if pound a nice soothing warm cup and cozy up for a nap, you merge the best of both worlds?
I've been doing this exact thing for most of my life...

It takes me at least 20 minutes just to fall asleep.  Am I some sort of outlier here?  Even when I was a little kid I couldn't take a nap, my only sleep happens at night.

I drink a cup of coffee and it relaxes me so much I can sometimes just fall asleep afterwards.

Yeah I know that probably means something is wrong with me.

If any of you farkers can tell me why this happens I would love to know

Some people are just like that. My GF can drink caffeine all day and never has a problem sleeping.

Not me tho, I have to stop any caffeine consumption by 2pm latest (lunch usually)

A significant percentage of people react in a sort-of backward manner when given stimulants.  That's why kids with ADHD are often prescribed drugs like Adderall, dexadrine and Ritalin to calm them down and help them focus.  Maybe you have a mild hyperactive disorder?

/I wouldn't worry about it

Oh I think I have some sort of disorder, I get bored very easily and hate "staying on task."  It's been that way all my life and has interfered with school and work.  I've never been diagnosed or on any of the drugs though!   Thanks for factoid!

I've always wondered what it feels like to fall asleep, facedown, into a cup of coffee.
(Hope it's decaf.)
