I would think, with busy families, fancy breakfasts would be fore weekends not weekdays.

I remember as a kid we only had pancakes or waffles on the weekends because single mothers don't want to wake up even earlier to fix breakfast when they have a full day's work ahead of them.

Whatever.  It's poop now.  My dear old mom used make us bar bats on a lathe in the basement.  She'd tell us "Just take the lunch you want from the dorks at the bus stop.  If they protest, whack 'em a coupla times.  The mopes will get the message eventually.  Fer yer lunch, the lunch lady will give you a free meal.  She knows who signs her paycheck."   Sadly, mom went to Dwight when they busted up the Chicago mob.  She says she had to take the fall and would do it again.

I'd rather not contribute to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity that is plaguing the nation today. With kids getting less exercise due to video games, cutting of school recess, and PE programs, it makes sense to at least equip our children with a nutritious breakfast to start off the day,  Just kidding I'll give them a twin pack of Pop Tarts to eat in car pool.

Our daughter starts 6th grade next Tuesday. I don't think I ever started school before Labor Day.

We always started the Wednesday after Labor Day (New Jersey).

Richmond schools start Tuesday.

No Goatse pancake?

2014-08-28 08:27:27 AM
If you want to do pancakes, fine, but make the batter like this:

1/2 cup non-fat cottage cheese
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup egg whites
1 tsp vanilla extract
Cinnamon optional

Use an immersion blender and it will make a batter. Cook like a normal pancake. Looks the same, tastes almost the same, and is a heck of a lot more healthy. 300 calories and 30g protein.

Even still, don't make shapes and all sorts designs and goofy stuff. Food is for eating a nutrition, it is not a reward and it is not entertainment (at least with children it should be treated that way.) Next thing you know you'll have kids who won't eat their dinner because it isn't "fun" enough.

I suppose pancakes are an acceptable consolation prize if you don't own a waffle iron.

2014-08-28 08:31:37 AM
This morning, I made turkey sausage and egg sandwiches on honey wheat rounds. I've also done peanut butter and apples or bananas with a glass of milk or two eggs and toast. Or sweet potato cubes with egg on a whole wheat tortilla. Or a scoop of protein powder in the blender with some frozen fruit for a smoothie.

All of these are quick and easy and even healthy first thing. Two servings of protein (at least 10g) and a serving of fiber (at least 3g). Usually keeps 'em satisfied until lunch.

It doesn't matter what you make for breakfast the first day of school, the kid is going to be tired, cranky, and generally unpleasant unless you've been getting them up at 6am and dressed and fed by 7:30 all summer. My kid loves her school and was excited about starting up again until the moment when I woke her up that morning.

Damnit, that would be over eating and you'll get fat from too many nutritions!

My post should be completely ignored after the recipe. My pre-coffee ranting was pretty dumb. :)

Sometimes it is nice to do over the top fun things for your kids. The biggest joy of being a parent is seeing how awesome the world can be through a child's eyes.

I'm sad that some of you can't fathom that.

Oh I'm not questioning the factual validity of the statement, just . . . man it must suck to be a kid these days. Can't go outside without a parent, can't play a sport without a league, can't ride a bike without a helmet, gotta sit in a class for half (the best half, IMO) of summer . . .

But then there are the times you go out of your way to do special stuff like this and/or spend lot of money and/or time on things for them, only to have them say they don't like it, refuse to eat it, and generally be uncooperative about whatever it was you were hoping they'd do.  Kids can be great some time, but they can also be the worst people in the world.

Sending your child to school on a breakfast of pancakes should be considered child abuse. They're nothing but sugar and carbs, void of any nutrition what-so-ever. They'll be falling asleep on their desk by the end of first period.

Except me.  I'm the worst person in the world all the time.  Gotta pick a side, ya know.

basemetal: [resources2.news.com.au image 650x366]Meh,

Those are cool.

We used to frequent a place in Tacoma, WA (Puget Sound Pizza. They serve breakfast too) where the cook was an aspiring artist who'd make insanely awesome pancake creations for the kids, like dinosaurs and palm trees, or various sea creatures. They were works of art. Unfortunately for us, and fortunately for him, he quit being a cook in order to pursue his art full time.
