(Daily Mail)   'In 45 years I have never seen anything like it. There must have been 5,000 wasps. It was a job to deal with it. I had to put all my protective gear on. At one stage there must have been 2,000 wasps buzzing around me.'   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 89

Why couldn't it at least have been bees? They're disappearing, and apiarists would have been happy to come and take them away.

Do wasps do anything useful?

Didn't know hornets and wasps were different insects.

Many wasps are the predators of other more obnoxious pest insects. .

Wasps also pollinate some things.

They also eat pests.

Just knocked down a bunch of paper wasp nests prepping for painting (couldn't spray most of them, too close to food), stomped on the ones I could, I think I'm gonna have some pissed off wasps in the morning, which is when I'll break out the shop vac and vacuum them up.

I'll dose up on benedryl first too, just in case I get nailed.

I'm sad that my fig tree died this year to a freak weak long sub-zero freeze in the PNW.

The kiwis did ok, and the almond trees too.

I'm all for gathering honeybee swarms, but something like that...that...just no. KILL IT WITH FIRE, sorry about the rest of the house.

That nest picture will give me nightmares. Should've stopped reading when there was something about them eating through pillows.

Had no idea bees helped fig trees. Have one taken from a cutting from a 100 year old tree from Italy.
Last winter hit it hard but he's doing ok.

Wasps are like earwigs, ie, dickheads, but at least they burn nicely and die, whereas earwigs  just won't die.

For the past few summers wasps have been finding their way into my apartment. They must be building nests under the siding and only after sealing every small opening around the window frames have I stopped spotting any wasps.

But for awhile just hearing that buzzing noise they make would make me spazz out.
