Officers continued firing on the suspect as he exited the restaurant, and that was when the Cops crew member was also struck, said Schamaderer.

So they kept firing without regard to who or what was behind the suspect?

That's some fine police training there, Lou.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said witnesses and officers thought the robbery suspect's Airsoft handgun was real, but that it fires only plastic pellets. He said the suspect fired from the pellet gun before officers returned fire.

FFS.  They should have been able to EASILY identify that the gun was fake.  Airsoft guns don't sound a damn thing like real guns.  As soon as the perp fired the Airsoft gun, the cops should have just started laughing at the guy.  Instead they killed two people, one innocent and the other not a threat.

/and yes, I'm saying that the officers should have realized he wasn't a threat based seeing and hearing the Airsoft gun being fired.

Don't worry, if the perp had lived he'd be charged with murder.

2014-08-27 08:35:41 PM
If you think it's OK to murder innocent people because you can't tell the difference between a pellet gun being fired and a real gun being fired... you might be a police officer.

If you think it's OK to throw an explosive device into a baby's crib...  you might be a police officer.

If you shoot and kill people's dogs for the hell of it... you might be a police officer.

I'll play devil's advocate for a second and say that human perception doesn't work like that, and even the best of training (which I'm not saying these officers had) can entirely fix that problem. When you spend a good chunk of your life teaching your brain what a gun is and that it's bad, when presented with a gun-like object that makes gun-like movements and gun-like noises your brain is going to see and hear a gun. That's eons of pattern recognition survival skills at work, and you aren't really going to change that. The best you can do (which obviously didn't happen here) is train yourself to take a second look and confirm. The bad part about that (and you're again fighting eons of survival traits) is that second look can get you killed.

They should have just filmed in Ferguson and then any action by the police would have been justified and enjoyed for the viewership.

Another article says he was the sound guy.  I don't know, in TV parlance is that part of the camera crew or do they have a different union?

Noticeably F.A.T.: I'll play devil's advocate for a second and say that human perception doesn't work like that, and even the best of training (which I'm not saying these officers had) can entirely fix that problem. And add to that that once the first cop fired all the cops heard real gunfire.  If you are dumb enough to shoot an airsoft gun at cops I'm fine with the cops shooting you- of course it would be nice if they didn't hit innocent sound engineers.  (I'm not sure I'd call him an innocent bystander- at a certain point your active roll in moving toward the violence removes the 'bystander' part.)

Contagious shooting. General Gates above is absolutely correct. Once the first police round was fired at Cortez Washington, it was game on, and every swinging dick lit him up. the same thing happened in NYC a few years back when a gentleman being jacked up tendered his wallet with ID, which in the gloom of night was mistaken for a pistol.

I guarantee the cops made that part up of him shooting.

That is why they will not release the video.

Nobody shoots pellet guns at at people with real guns.

Yeah, the guy in Missouri with the steak knife who got killed by the police - lots of exaggeration.

2014-08-27 08:59:17 PM
Another small point here for you Cop haters  - if the airsoft gun didn't look anything like a real gun, how did the robber think it was going to work to rob the place? Perhaps, just maybe, he painted that red tip black?

As for the " doesn't look like a real gun" anyhow,  the image below is an Airsoft Smith & Wesson pellet gun; looks real enough to me.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said witnesses and officers thought the robbery suspect's Airsoft handgun was real, but that it fires only plastic pellets. He said the suspect fired from the pellet gun before officers returned fire. The suspect was struck by gunfire, but fled outside of the restaurant before collapsing.
Officers continued firing on the suspect as he exited the restaurant, and that was when the Cops crew member was also struck, said Schamaderer.

Did that make sense to anyone? Multiple cops were shooting at a man with a... pellet gun? And one of the cops shot the crew member? They thought the gun was real but also thought it only fires pellets? Those are opposites. This is an AP article?

Also the name Todd Schmaderer sounds like a name someone would make up under pressure. Todd what? Todd.. Schma...der.. er..
