That's a good analogy. I'd call them Bon Jovi, only uglier and six shots of whiskey.

That does a pretty big disservice to Pearl Jam.

In the subjective world of music, there is really only one pragmatic measure of a band's quality and that is how much money they have made selling their music.

I don't get how they could be compared to Metallica. Maybe some of their newer stuff? I don't know, I haven't heard any new Metallica in years. But when you mention a band in that kind of comparison, especially one that's been around as long as Metallica, you need to state a time frame for the comparison. Old Metallica sounds nothing like Nickelback or even new Metallica (I assume).

I range between agnostic to ignorant about pop music, but I still don't get all the hate for these guys that I've heard from people over the years.
I've heard them, those car-horn harmonies are irritating, like the inevitable treacly thirds in country music; not  my cup of tea, but it still puzzles me how this particular band became a punch-line.

Got bored of Right the Lightning? That's their best album. Creeping Death does rock.

I bet he didn't even try listening to it so made up "3 songs", as that makes it sound like he gave it a go. While of the first 3 you have 'Fight Fire with Fire', which is the weakest on the album it doesn't matter, because the titular track, RtL is second, and it's one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. I declare him to be a giant shenanigan. No one can have different opinions to me, just doesn't happen.

I friend of mine recently told me that she and her friends used the term back in middle school in reference to Poison and similar bands, so it has been around for a while. It was the first I had heard of the term. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Could be. One of the Urban Dictionary definitions says, "Generally found on CBS owned radio stations across the Midwest, Great Plains, and Southwest, butt rock is overly commercialized, processed music that lacks innovation and creativity."

That sounds about right, but it is an UD definition, so take from that what you will.

There are two kinds of Metallica fans. You have the metal fans, who listen to Metallica in the context of a thrash metal band, and then you have the Black Album and newer fans. I have met a lot of people who say they love Metallica and have never heard anything but Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. They generally listen to Nickelback and "butt-rock" as well.

Proving, once again, that fully half the population has below average taste in music.

If you bought a nickleback album you deserve every bit of butthurt you feel when people make fun of them.  Your taste in music sucks, and your opinion is wrong.

Nickelback gets a lot of hate, obviously. I don't listen to them at all anymore, but that's not to say that their early stuff is pretty decent.

Curb and The State had 2 or 3 good songs on them. Leader of Men is a good track. Worthy to Say. Just For.

Nickelback didn't become complete shiate until they released "How You Remind Me" and became the country-pop-slow-rock they (presumably) are today.

i don't get all the hate for nickelback either.  i listen to heavy metal, everything from megadeth to cradle of filth, and i can tolerate nickelback sometimes.  i would rather listen to them than terrible shiat like coldplay or maroon 5 or even some classic rock bands like journey.  i'll listen to nickelback all day to avoid listening to journey.
