It amazes me sometimes how little people think things through.  Apparently, it didn't occur to him never to lose track of which way a rock might roll.

Sounds like he was caught between a rock and a hard place.

Once he dug all the way around it, what did he plan on doing with it?

If I had to guess, his plan was to dig all around it, a nice deep hole.  Then do something with the boulder.  After that, fill in the hole and you're done!

Do you think he was humming the theme to "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" right before the boulder became dislodged? I like to think he was, right up to the end...

ReapTheChaos: Once he dug all the way around it, what did he plan on doing with it?

He may have been trying to bury it. Farmers used to dig a pit next to boulders too big to haul off, tip them in, and then bury them so they could plow over top.

Of quartz, he died. You should never take a boulder for granite. He'd have been much better off had he stayed inside and gotten stoned.

There's a reason I hire people to do any kind of heavy work, or work involving power tools, or electricity, or pretty much anything else.

It's because I don't want to end up a corpse in a headline like this.
