Do they play Halo or some other FPS?  Do they even know what a FPS is?  No? Then they don't actually count as "gamers"...

That's a terrible opinion.

This reminds me of the study that says women are nearly 50% of the comic book buying audience because they buy a lot of Manga.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of my civilization nuking the f*ck out of Gandhi.

/seriously, the adults are gaming, you go back to your brofest, dude
//don't start thermonuclear wars with Gandhi

I run into lots of women playing Crusader Kings 2.

Also, from the article:
All of that means that stereotypes are breaking fast in the gaming industry, particularly the longheld stereotype of the adult woman as an outlier who sticks to mobile games and "social" games on Facebook while the more hardcore gamer, the "serious" (male) gamer, goes for console games. Though this stereotype has long persisted, and even been used as a hiring tactic, the new data suggests there's little if any truth to it-especially not when you consider that the average adult woman has been gaming for 13 years. Sorry, male gamers of Reddit and 4Chan, but Angry Birds only came out five years ago. Unless you want to try to argue that women have just been playing Bejeweled for the last 13 years, the math just doesn't add up.

Dammit, I like being catered to, I don't want to be in the minority.

Now that they know women are the majority they'll make everything pink with flowers and hearts, because that's what all women like.

Game companies like Pop Cap and Zinga are publicly traded companies worth millions. Where are they getting their money from? I would suggest the overwhelming portion is women playing games on facebook and their phones.

well, theres tons of single men there for them to find

2014-08-26 01:59:44 PM
Well it's been firmly established that girls don't play WoW.  Just ask in trade chat.  Everyone will tell you.

Hey crushing candy is still a game and if a gamer is someone that plays games I think they would still qualify as a "gamer".

Plus, playing Halo is the definition of a gamer? That game was released 13 years ago. If LordZorch hasn't played anything in the entire decade since, I don't think he really qualifies as a gamer.

psh these women probably only play video games that were overproduced cash grabs, knockoffs of knockoffs of knockoffs churned out by some overly corporate studio that stifles innovation in favor of corporate advertising, sponsorship, or freemium elements

not like REAL gamers, like those who play league of legends

Plus, even if its primary audience is people who wouldn't otherwise play video games, casual games have resulted in the biggest growth in the industry ever and broadened the demographic from "basement dwelling nerds" to "everyone, everywhere".

South Korea has been filling stadiums with people watching two guys play Starcraft against each other for years.  Admittedly I don't know if they've switched to Starcraft 2 yet or not, but since you don't seem to acknowledge the existence of Halo sequels, I guess that doesn't matter.

Penis in one hand, controller in the other, headset for calling noobs names that's what gamers are made of.

It's like the idea of being a reader, a television watcher, or a movie buff.

If you only like arty independent films are you really a movie buff?

I've just never experienced the bro-club that gaming supposedly is. Like, I know spaces like that exist, but in every area where I've connected with other gamers, I've always seen a fair mix of age and gender. And I'm not seeking out exclusively feminist or woman-friendly social spheres, either -- I just meet other people online who play the same games I do. Yeah, it's skewed heavily male, but finding women or other minorities has never been shocking or revolutionary.

I'd wager that perhaps obsessive gamers (the 50-hour-a-week, up until 4 AM every night, never leave the house except for food types) are probably a lot more heavily male, but I've known a few ladies to fall into that category too. But in general, the idea of gaming as a domain of exclusively Geeky Guys has been obsolete for a long time now.

It's kind of like conservatives hand-wringing for the "decency" and "morality" of the '50s -- trying to defend a SUPAR SEKRIT CLUBHOWSE that hasn't actually existed for at least a decade.

Whoo! As an older male gamer, yeah, the move towards older female gamers playing MMOs has been fun as hell. It's forced online MMOs to reconsider their content and gameplay strategies, for one thing.

I'm looking forward to deeper content and less "fast twitch" gaming, in which RPG, story, and involvement take precedence over "shoot fast, don't ask questions" gameplay.

While I welcome the idea of more women playing video games since it will help make it more socially acceptable as a hobby, I don't see anything that shows women are dominating the traditional hardcore games market.  I still think they's a big gender divide with women coming down mostly in the casual gaming end and guys dominating the more hardcore end.  When more women are playing Halo, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Total War etc then I'll consider it noteworthy.

FTA on what women have been playing:
"Casual computer games, mostly. The report ranks online and mobile puzzle games, board games, trivia games, and card games as coming in second to the boom in social games, which more than doubled in popularity between 2012 and 2013. "
