He probably just didn't want the two dollar bill in his register as there is no slot for it.

And yet they're still allowed to sell counterfeit food.

to hand customers counterfeit $20 bills as change.

Wow. There are people who spend enough money on one trip to Taco Bell that they need $20 bills in change?

Buying enough Taco Bell to get a Twenty in change? Well, that explains this:

The first customer of the day always pays with a $100 bill.

The universe hates cash register clerks that way.

Counterfeiting is illegal the last time I checked and the secret service should be involved in this, arresting the supervisors.

I eat Taco Bell once every two or three years to remind myself why I eat Taco bell only once every two or three years.

It says two fake twenty's and that the scheme went on for two weeks. I'm confused.

2014-08-26 09:36:52 AM
Counterfeiting and passing of said currency is a federal crime, isn't it?  If so, how the hell did this make on the docket as a class action law suit ahead of arrests and convictions?

2014-08-26 09:36:56 AM
Kid, find another job.  You're worried about losing that job, but you're working for crooks who don't care if you end up with a felony, and you are making minimum wage.  Even if you just move to another minimum wage job, you need to move.

2014-08-26 09:37:23 AM
I'm guessing the supervisors were the ones xeroxing the fake $20s and pocketing the difference.

It's probably a franchise. As such, the owners would have a DBA that vaguely alludes to their stores.

Also, since Taco Bell is the only damn thing open here at certain times of day, I've come to appreciate, even savor, the squirts it gives me. Besides, if you limit it to the Deal Menu, you get less diarrhea for cheaper!

I don't think you thought the math through.

2014-08-26 09:42:43 AM
In defense of the store...  The rules concerning counterfeit bills suck.

If you happen to get stuck with one, you are required to turn in it.  And that's it.  If you have a fake $100, you are stuck with it.  Period.  You do not get your $100 back.  It doesn't matter where it came from.  This is especially bad when it was a bank that gave it to you in the first place (it's rare, but it happens).

So, what are you supposed to do if you get a fake?  Obviously, you GET RID OF IT!  As quickly as possible.  Certainly to the most unsuspecting person, who will not check if it's real.  Like, some guy getting change at Taco Bell.  Then it's their problem.

Well, it sounds like there may be some supervisor positions opening up there.

Also, with the exception of one particular store that hit my guts hard every time I went, I never have any issues with taco bell, even if it has been sitting out for a couple days.
With Smugala's (a pretty tasty pizza place) on the other hand, I have around 15 minutes before my cheeks have to be on the seat.

This. If you buy Taco Bell for a family, how much do you expect to spend? Less than $5?? Less than $10?? Being that it's Manhattan, take that into consideration too.

The article does mention that he recorded his managers in a meeting where they tried to convince him to pass these bills, and where some of them pretended to be undercover cops.  And the article does mention that he then took that information to the cops.

This being fark, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that someone is here rooting for the kid to go to jail.

The situation sucks, but I don't think it's the rules' fault. You'd  already gotten ripped off at that point; it just took you a little while to notice it. And it's basically the same rule as for any kind of theft or fraud. If somebody sneaks into my store and steals my cash register, I can either report the crime (and the police won't give me another cash register), or I can steal one from another store.

Low ends jobs tend to suck, no doubt.  But not every low end job has a supervisor who is demanding that you commit felonies.  The fact that you think they are all like that says something very sad about you.

They made, her, pass the counterfit bills for 2 weeks straight.

If you can go to jail for having pot on your person, then you sure as hell should go to jail if you have been passing counterfit bills for 2 weeks.

Don't most places have a "We do not accept bills over $20" for this reason?

He wouldn't necessarily be lying, but he is making a promise he can't back up. Local PD has nothing to do with who gets arrested in counterfeiting cases. Secret Service does that. It's unlikely the girl will be arrested because she's clearly being manipulated and coerced, and did eventually report the crime, but still possible.

So a counterfeiter goes to Taco Bell and spends $2 and pays with a $50 bill. I wish I could see the look on his face when he realizes he's been given two fake $20 bills.

No, there are assholes who show up to places like this and try to pay with large bills.

As the suit claims, a 17-year-old worker identified as "J.A." was told by management that she had accidentally accepted two of the fake bills while working behind the counter, and could either pay the sum back out of pocket or hand them out to customers. She obliged for two weeks--hey, you probably would too if you were 17 and had your job on the line--at which point she refused to continue.

Jesus, it took her two weeks to hand out two $20 bills? I understand she was a little freaked out, but holy crap, she should have refused after an hour or two, even if she WAS scared for her job.

No.  Just... no.  There is no defending the store here.  None.  The article is a little confusing, but what they're actually saying is not that she accidentally accepted two fake bills - rather, she was TOLD she had done so, to make her feel obligated to "correct" her "mistake".

The reason it went on for two weeks is because it was a lie.  The managers instructing her to give out the fake bills were the ones distributing counterfeit bills.
