Then I said, "That's not my penis" and she said, "That's okay, that's not my belly button".

Only the Today show could produce content this superficial and insipid.  Plus I think their website is infected with 'watering hole' malware.

Anyone old enough to remember the central female in the late 70's movie "Earth 2?" She had no belly button at all, explained that she was a clone.AFAik.

"and then there are people with tattoos who say get rid of the tattoo"

What regrettable belly button tattoos may look like:

Pictures of Playboy playmates (37 to be exact) served as the source of "beauty."

They do realize that their source material to find the 'ideal' bellybutton has been shopped, right?

Are you sure that was the 70s movie and not the mid-90s TV series?

Huh. My wife has a weird belly button, wonder if she could get it fixed. Even though it's only 1/4 inch deep, it's more than an inch across. Kinda creeps me out.

It's good to get this sort of thing out of the way when you're young. My kid had belly-button surgery for a urachal remnant when she was only a couple months old.

I'd actually be totally okay with having no navel after surgery: one less thing to clean. Seems a little weird, but I'm already a little weird.

A navel destroyer is nothing to be concerned about. An anal destroyer on the other hand...

Frigate, I'm betting the doc does this for money to buy a new Corvette to go cruiser around in.

Long, rambling, kind of related CSB ahead:

My friends at the time had their oldest daughter born with a herniated navel. So every time she cried the thing would grow purple, triple in size, and arched downward. It was like Gonzo's nose, except it grew from nothing but a small bump. Yes, like a penis. Creeped us the fark out.

They decided to wait until she was old enough to decide for herself if she wanted it removed, under the idea that this "was as God made her and it was His plan." The wife was borderline fundie, but I was good friends with the husband so I tried to put up with her.

So of course years go by. This little girl gets into second or third grade when other kids start making fun of it. They're home schooled, so other kids didn't see it until they'd go to a public pool and see it raising a lump under her bathing suit when she strains to swim. She wants it fixed.

Of course, if they had it fixed as an infant, not only would it have been less pain and recovery, but Dad was in the Navy and they had medical insurance. Now he's out, they live in Kansas, have SIX KIDS total, and can't afford to have it fixed. She's a teenager now, and refuses to go anywhere her stomach may show even slightly, and mom can't figure out why she's so ashamed of "God's own creation." She's gone full fundie now.

I'm only "friends" with them on Facebook now. It's like my own little portal into Kansas crazy.

I'm surprised she didn't sue her parents to get it fixed.

Well, if either of her parents ever has a hernia, I hope she reminds them it's God's plan for them...

It was "Genesis II" (a pilot created by Gene Roddenberry in 1973) and the character had 2 navels, supposedly to make up for the fact that network censors didn't allow him to show navels on Star Trek.

There was one major exception:  We never got to see the navel of the hottest woman in TOS:
