Remember America, you are nothing without a college education.  We are not saying that the 13 years you spent in public school was a waste of your time and public resources in comparison to what existed even two decades ago.  We are saying you need to go massively into debt to get a slip of paper so that you can be gainfully employed (and pay that money back).  What is so awesome with this new form of indentured servitude is that the debt cannot be discharged via bankruptcy.  Want even more awesome?  YOU CAN DO IT FROM THE COMFY CONFINES OF YOUR HOUSE!  Heck, we don't have to spend money on classrooms and better, you will not meet other people so no networking (which in the past was half the reason to go to college)

In the 90's we made the economy look good as you spent money you did not have through credit cards.  In the 00's we sunk you with mortgages you never should have had.  Now it is education.

Dubya's "No Retard Left Behind" was just the foundation.  Get your butt a student loan today.

R.I.P. sleazebag Sperling. Maybe you didn't start your company --- not "school," "company" -- to be a government-suckling ripoff scheme, but that's its legacy. And yours, too.

I want my taxpayer money back from the loans the government financed for your company.

Why not go to community college get a legit AA and use it to get into a state school. Most offer online classes now. In Florida all our community colleges became state colleges and started offering 4 year degrees, a lot those courses are online as well. I guess my question is, why do people pay ridiculous tuition fees to these for profit schools whose degrees are fairly worthless?

there is a bill wending it's way through congress to stop the more egregious parts of the diploma mills and institute some common sense. but here there are radio ads running touting "an adults right to make their own financial decisions". which is fine until the "school" lies to you up one side and down the other. and all you have heard all your life is how you must have a college degree.

there is a special place in hell for ripping off the ignorant uneducated.

well unless you are selling them gold coins in which case it's fine.

University level education is very dependant on the student. Coursework and materials are pretty much the same from school to school and college professors differ in style and quality even in the same school. A student attending the University of Phoneix will be exposed to the same concepts as the person attending Yale in the same undergraduate major. It seems that the actual knowledge that is supposed to be represented by the diploma is secondary to the name of the school on the diploma.

That's actually kind of true. I know there's a lot of for profit schools that probably scam kids with outrageous tuitions but I've interviewed grads from some of those schools and they in most cases have the same knowledge and skills as higher university students. A lot of it is brand recognition.

An all online college wouldn't be a bad idea for non-traditional students, if there was one that was worth going through. I mean with technology, and facial recognition, you could develop a program that confirms that the student was in front of his computer during his lectures, and it was in fact them who took the online test and not a buddy.  Not that anyone has ever taken an online exam, and cheated.  Also, if said university had certain standards and accreditation that was at least as good as the local community college.  Of course then, you couldn't sell yourself as the last resort for academically challenged students, who are ill informed about the value of their shovel degree.

I have two post graduate degrees, one from a directional state (MHA), the other from UoP (MBA). The course work itself wasn't much different, but the collegiality of the cohort was much better at the brick school. The cost wasn't all that much different either, because I was going during the opening stages of the great tuition spike and I felt it in both places while I was there. Both degrees contribute to my professional success, and I'm glad I have both. I was actually surprised at the number of people in my UoP classes who, like me, were also using it for a second degree, seems to be as common as students selecting it for their first. As more traditional schools open online-only degree tracks I think we'll see this paradigm continue to evolve into a  reputable method for obtaining additional education and some of the quality stigma will go away. Of course, that won't help if they don't get control of the business-model issues.

As someone who has taught an online class and provided tech support for them for years, I can honestly say that they are impossible to teach well. It is possible to get someone through the basic information and exercises if they are a middle-of-the-road student, but students with special needs (in either direction) can't be serviced properly. If there is a handicap or a simple difficulty understanding the material, the student can't meet after class and office hours are a joke. If the student wants more from the course, the same problem applies. Feedback is fundamentally stunted, even if the student doesn't really care and just needs a C+ or B- (which is the target audience, as far as I can figure).

That said, there are a lot of online tools and exercises that can really help in traditional classroom settings - I know, the company I work for produces one of the most successful ones

/Theoretically, the stuff we do could run without a prof or TA, but every time it is tried, it is a failure for the same reason - no flesh and blood instruction.

Because people want to get a degree from a private school where they will be able to live in a bubble which conforms to their worldview there. I went to a small state school, paid less than 1/10 the tuition of a private school. Graduated debt free.
