Not too many guys basically create a genre, but he did and we were all better for it.

He tells a great story about having no idea for several years that the action on his Jazzmaster was adjustable, and was way too high when he bought it.

This was overplayed to the point it now annoys me. Substitute "Shipbuilding."

Well you probably mispelled Veronica, but i'm not sure I remember how to spell that one, so maybe you're right, I'll just go sit in my favorite chair now

Little Palaces. What a damn genius.

Also, I feel old...

Back in the 90s, I was buying a lot of vinyl because it was a seriously cheap way to find new old bands. You had a few crate diggers but it wasn't a THING like it is now. I bought an Elvis Costello album, put it on and was really unimpressed. Flash forward and I finally hear the song Radio Radio after reading about it in a book about MTV and I was completely blown away. It turns out that I was the one that was wrong all along.

My heart grew, like, eight sizes that day. Long-term heroin use led to an infection and the lining around my heart was infected. I almost died but at least I knew the truth about Elvis Costello.

Other bands I went back, listened to in my old age and realized I was wrong: Velvet Underground and Neutral Milk Hotel.

It almost makes me want to go back and check out Nu Metal because if I thought that Elvis Costello was bad and I think Nu Metal is terrible then I bet Nu Metal is AWESOME.

I was never the same

Pretty much every track on his first 2 albums. After that he gets a little uneven. Lots of great music still, but a bunch of dogs mixed in.

I always liked "Green Shirt" "Shipbuilding" "Shabby Doll" and "Allison."

I saw him perform in Des Moines, Iowa.  I wasn't a huge fan but my older sister who was a college radio DJ was and she insisted I go.  It was one of the best live performances I've seen my whole life.  He played practically everything in his repertoire and people were going nuts dancing, which is something that generally doesn't happen in staid auditorium shows.  Incredible songwriter and performer.

Oh it was the Imperial Bedroom tour, in the early 80s.  Another great album.

I'm not going to biatch about the list, because I'm mostly OK with it.

list misses Stranger in the House and 5 gears in reverse

can I point out that Elvis is a blind, ignorant white......

Beautiful personality as well, apparently. Additional cool points to Mr Costello for his good taste.

Songwise, I'd include Shipbuilding and Almost Blue for the jazz style, Tokyo Storm Warning for lyrics, and High Fidelity for kickass music.

She is upsettingly hot.

Can't RTFA at work but I'm hoping it includes "Almost Blue". I farking love that song, and Costello did it way better than Chet Baker ever did (which is saying something).

I was buying Elvis Costello albums since My Aim is True, and quit after Armed Forces.

Was a big fan, then he got weird and jazzy, screw that, Veronica's an OK song for a comeback, and he has my lifelong respect.

I certainly don't need some latter day click bait pile of gen-Y crap telling me what he is and is not.

I like Costello but my favorite Elvis Costello songs are my favorites when sung by other people. Roy Orbison covered The Comedians and Costello co-wrote the music from A Colbert Christmas.  That version of Peace, Love and Understanding with Feist, Willie Nelson and John Legend is much improved on the original.

I kept the A Colbert Christmas soundtrack in my car year round.

I started loving his music the moment he appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1977. I was agog. I bought My Aim is True the next day. I listened to it for the billionth just last week.

A couple of years ago I discovered his BBC show Spectacle. He sits with the guests on stage and he's the most knowledgeable fan ever. And then they play together.

Check out the episode guide.

Spectacle Season One
    1 Elton John
2 Lou Reed and Julian Schnabel
    3 Bill Clinton
    4 James Taylor
    5 Tony Bennett
    6 The Police
7 Rufus Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle
    8 Rosanne Cash/Norah Jones/Kris Kristofferson/John Mellencamp
    9 Renee Fleming
    10 Herbie Hancock
    11 She & Him/Jenny Lewis/Jakob Dylan
12 Diana Krall Interviewed by Elton John
    13 Smokey Robinson

Spectacle Season Two
    1 Bono and the Edge
    2 Neko Case/Sheryl Crow/Ron Sexsmith/Jesse Winchester
    3 Levon Helm/Nick Lowe/Richard Thompson/Allen Toussaint
4 Elvis Costello Interviewed by Mary-Louise Parker
    5 Lyle Lovett/Ray LaMontagne/John Prine
    6 Bruce Springsteen: Part 1
    7 Bruce Springsteen: Part 2

There would be national outrage if that was released today. Farking pathetic.

So, three albums?

My Aim Is True (1977)
This Year's Model (1978)
Armed Forces (1979)

I'd go at least all the way through Get Happy! (1980) and Trust (1981) before I'd concede there was even one bad song on any album. Almost Blue was kind of a mess, and then Imperial Bedroom and Punch the Clock were back to brilliant from beginning to end.

Then we got Goodbye Cruel World, and the whole thing went to shiat forever thereafter. (Yes, including King of America. And Spike.)

3 and 4, yes. The rest no so much. Not that I don't like them but they are not in the top ten. Some of them suffer from being overplayed until you farking hate them

No "Party Girl"? "So Like Candy"? "Riot Act"??? Meh.
